Chapter 101 The last two hours
Chapter 101 The last two hours
The first hour passed like a held breath.
Zane drove. Elena sat with her thumb pressed over the clasp and her mind doing exactly what the voice on the phone had told her to do. Real things. True things. She didn't let it wander. Didn't let it drift toward what ifs or worst cases. She kept it anchored to specific concrete things that were genuinely hers.
The cold fought back the whole time. Hard and constant. Not strategic anymore. Just force. Like something that had stopped thinking and started simply refusing.
The tape held.
She checked it every fifteen minutes. Pressed the edges. Made sure the adhesive was still connecting the two halves of the cracked clasp. It was degrading. Slowly. The edges were lifting in two corners now. But it was holding.
Zane had gone quiet about forty minutes ago. She'd asked him once if the voice was still there and he'd said yes but I stopped listening to it. She'd taken him at his word. He knew himself well enough to know the difference between not listening and pretending not to listen. If he said he'd stopped he had.
The trees on both sides of the road started looking familiar. They were in home territory now. The specific quality of old growth that surrounded the pack lands. She'd grown up running through these trees. Knew them by the way the light came through at different times of day.
Forty minutes left on the navigation.
The warmth at her wrist was very strong now. The strongest it had been through this entire journey. It had moved beyond just her wrist. She could feel it in her hand. In her fingers. Spreading slowly upward toward her elbow. The hope is coming back. Taking up space. Filling in the gap that had been empty since the figure took it seven months ago.
Not complete yet. But close. So close she could feel the shape of what it would be when it finished.
She thought about the gap. About what it had felt like to carry it. The hollow space in her chest where something essential used to live. She'd learned to work around it. Had become so accustomed to its presence that she'd almost stopped noticing it was an absence.
Now she noticed. Now the contrast was sharp and clear.
The cold surged hard.
She pressed her thumb down. Felt the tape flex under her thumb. One corner lifting further.
Twenty minutes.
The pack house road was ahead. She could see the turn. The familiar gravel drives through the trees. The gate that had always meant home.
The cold became something she didn't have words for. Not pain. Not sound. Just an overwhelming presence pressing outward from the bracelet in every direction simultaneously. The Hollow's last real effort. Concentrated and total.
The tape lifted completely on one side.
She grabbed her wrist with her other hand. Pressed the clasp shut physically with her fingers. Holding the two halves together by grip alone.
"Almost there," Zane said.
He turned onto the gravel drive.
She saw the pack house. Lights on. Mira's room window visible from the drive.
She saw Mira standing at the front door. Small and frail and completely steady. Watching the truck come in. Both hands raised slightly at her sides. Already working.
The cold hit the absolute peak of everything it had.
Elena held the clasp shut with her bare fingers and felt the bracelet shake against her grip.
Mira's eyes met hers through the windshield.
And the front door behind Mira opened.
A figure stepped out.
Elena's blood stopped.
The figure had her face.
But this one wasn't a roadside illusion.
This one was solid. Real. And it had been inside her house.
