Chapter 100: The hundredth chapter
Elena put her hand over Zane's on the steering wheel.
Not grabbing it. Not stopping him from driving. Just placing her hand over his so he could feel that she was there. Solid. Present. Real.
"Look at me," she said.
He couldn't. He was driving. But he turned his head for just a second. One second of eye contact.
That was enough.
"That is not my voice," she said. "I know it sounds like me. I know it sounds exact. But I need you to think about one thing." She kept her hand over his. "Have I ever once told you that breaking something was the solution. Have I ever in our entire lives looked at a problem and said "break it and see what happens."
He was quiet.
"You know me," she said. "Not the version it built from my memories. The actual version. The one who drove you crazy for thirty years. Think about who that person actually is."
His knuckles stayed white for another few seconds.
Then she felt his hands relax slightly under hers.
"No," he said. His voice was rough. "You never say break it."
"I say hold it. Fix it. Find another way. Breaking things is the last resort and only when everything else is gone." She kept her voice even. "It's using my voice but it doesn't understand how I think. It can copy the sound. It can't copy the reasoning."
He exhaled. Long and slow. The tension leaves his shoulders in visible stages.
"It's still there," he said. "Still talking."
"I know. Let it talk. You don't have to answer it. You don't have to argue with it. Just let it make noise while you drive."
"That's harder than it sounds."
"I know that too."
He drove. She kept her hand over his for another few minutes. Then moved it back to her own lap. Kept her thumb over the taped clasp.
The cold in the bracelet was fierce now. Angry in the way the Hollow had never felt angry before. Everything patient and strategic was stripped away. Just force. Just pressure. Pressing at every point simultaneously.
But the warmth was fiercer.
She could feel the difference. Over the last hour something had shifted in the balance. The warmth wasn't fighting anymore. It wasn't pushing against the cold the way two equal forces push against each other.
It was filling in around it. Moving into every space the cold wasn't occupying. Patient and unhurried. Like water finding its level.
Coming home.
She looked at the navigation.
Two hours forty minutes.
The Hollow was loud in the bracelet now. She could feel it without hearing it. The way you feel a sound that's too low to register as sound but moves through your chest anyway.
It knew.
It could feel what she felt. The hope is returning. Getting closer. Almost there. And it had run out of approaches. Had tried the image and the feeling and the reasoning and her voice through Zane. All of it had failed.
What it did now was just press. Raw and desperate and nothing like the careful patient thing it had been for months.
Even that felt like information. Like confirmation.
She thought about what Mira was waiting to tell her. What she'd been carrying since before Elena was born. She let herself want to know. Let herself look forward to understanding it finally.
The warmth surged.
Two hours.
She looked at Zane. He was still hearing it. She could tell from his jaw. But he was driving. Steady and straight and not breaking anything.
"Hey," she said.
He glanced at her.
"We made it to a hundred chapters," she said. "Whatever happens next. We made it here."
Something crossed his face. Not quite a smile. But close.
"We always make it," he said.
She looked at the road ahead. At the miles left between them and home.
"Yeah," she said quietly. "We do."
But the bracelet pulsed cold and hard at her wrist.
And she knew the last two hours were going to be the longest of her life.
