Chapter 102 The copy at the door

Chapter 102 The copy at the door
Zane stopped the truck.

Not a gradual stop. A hard stop. Gravel scattering under the tires. Both of them staring through the windshield at the figure standing behind Mira on the front step.

Her face. Her build. Her exact posture. Standing there in Elena's own jacket. The brown one she kept on the hook by the front door.

It had been in the house long enough to find her jacket.

Mira hadn't moved. Still standing with her hands raised slightly. Her eyes are still on Elena through the glass. Calm. Too calm. The kind of calm that costs something to maintain.

Elena understood immediately. Mira was holding something in place with whatever energy she had left. Keeping the situation from getting worse while she waited for Elena to arrive. Burning through reserves she didn't have.

Elena got out of the truck.

Zane was out his side at the same moment. No words exchanged. No plan discussed. They'd been doing this their whole lives. Moving together when it mattered.

The figure on the step watched her approach. Her own face watching her. Same eyes. Same everything. But the expression was wrong the same way the roadside figure had been wrong. Not in the details this time. In the quality. There was nothing behind it. No history. No tiredness. No accumulated weight of thirty years of living in this specific body.

Just the surface. Convincing surface. But only on the surface.

"Elena," the figure said. Her voice. Exactly.

She kept walking.

"You're exhausted," the figure said. Still her voice. Careful and reasonable. "You've been driving all night. Your bracelet is failing. Mira is barely standing." It tilted its head. "This doesn't have to be a confrontation. You could just rest."

Elena stopped six feet away.

Looked at Mira. "Are you okay?"

"Holding," Mira said through her teeth. Her hands were shaking. Whatever she was doing was costing her in real time.

"How long can you hold it?"

"Not long. Do what you need to do."

Elena looked back at the figure. At her own face looking back at her.

The bracelet was shaking against her fingers where she held the clasp shut. The cold is pushing out in every direction. The Hollow was split now. Part of it is still in the silver. Part of it out here in the shape it had built while they drove through the night. She could feel the connection between the two parts. Like a rope under tension. Pulled between the bracelet and the body standing on her front step.

That was the weakness.

She thought fast. The voice on the phone. What it had said. The hope returning weakens the Hollow because the Hollow needs a host without hope. A vessel who has accepted that nothing better is possible.

The figure was built from the part that had seeped out through the crack. The part that had been building itself slowly while the Hollow pretended to concentrate on other things. This had been the actual plan all along. Not the roadside image. Not the feeling. Not working through Zane.

Build a body outside. Split the containment. Make the bracelet try to hold half the Hollow while the other half stood free.

Because a split containment would fail faster.

She looked at the bracelet. At her fingers holding the clasp together.

Then she made a decision that went against everything cautious in her.

She let go of the clasp.

Zane made a sharp sound beside her. "Elena."

She held up her hand. Not now. Trust me.

The clasp didn't spring open. The crack was still there. The tape is mostly gone. But the two halves were still touching. Still connected.

She looked at the figure. "You split yourself. Part of you is out here. Part of you is still there." She raised her wrist. "That's the mistake."

The figure's expression shifted. Just slightly. The first real thing she'd seen on that face. Uncertainty.

"The hope is almost fully back," Elena said. "You can feel it the same way I can. And you split yourself to try to stop it. Which means the part of you that's still in the bracelet is weaker than it was. Not stronger." She kept her voice steady. "You gave up containment for a body that can't hold together without the bracelet to anchor it."

The figure looked at its own hands. A small involuntary gesture. Checking.

Elena stepped forward.

The figure stepped back.

"Mira," Elena said without looking away from the figure. "The ritual. The original one. Can you do any version of it right now? Small version. Enough to pull the outside part back into the silver."

Mira's voice was strained. "If you give me five seconds of stillness. Five seconds where it doesn't move."

"I'll give you five seconds."

She took another step toward the figure.

It moved to step back again.

Then Zane was behind it. Positioned while she'd been talking. She hadn't asked him. Hadn't needed to. He was just there. Blocking the retreat.

The figure stopped. Caught between them. Its eyes are going between Elena and Zane and Mira. The uncertain expression deepened.

Five seconds of stillness.

Mira's hands came up fully.

The figure opened its mouth. Elena's voice coming out distorted now. Losing coherence. "You don't know what you're"

Mira pulled.

The figure came apart like smoke in the wind. Fast. Completely. No drama. Just there and then not there.

The brown jacket fell empty to the front step.

Elena's bracelet went absolutely cold.

Then hot.

Then the warmth hit her like a wave crashing. Sudden and total and nothing like the slow careful return it had been for two days.

The hope came back all at once.

She dropped to one knee. Not from pain. From the sheer weight of it. From eleven years of something and then seven months of nothing and then everything returning in one single moment.

Zane caught her shoulder. Held her up.

Mira lowered her hands and sat down hard on the front step like her legs had simply voted to stop.

The pack house door opened behind her. Pack members spilling out. Pete. Sarah. Others. Their faces go between Elena on the gravel and the empty jacket on the step and Mira sitting down.

Elena stayed on one knee for a moment.

Felt the warmth settle. Feel it, find the gap and fill it. Felt the specific shape of what had been missing slot back into place the way a dislocated thing returns to its socket. Exactly.

She pressed her free hand flat against the gravel. Cold and real and absolutely present.

Then she stood up.

The bracelet on her wrist was still warm. She looked at it. At the cracked clasp and the remnants of medical tape and the empty vial still bound against it.

She could still feel something inside the silver.

Not the cold. Not the Hollow's pressure or its voice or its strategies.

Something much smaller. Compressed and quiet and absolutely furious.

The Hollow was still in there. Diminished. Split and then partially pulled back and weakened by the hope's return. But not gone.

Not destroyed.

Still present. Still waiting.

She looked at Mira on the step. "It's not finished."

Mira looked up at her. Her face was exhausted in a way that went deeper than tiredness.

"No," she said quietly. "The weakened part is still contained. But the ritual is to finish it properly." She stopped.

Elena waited.

"I'm not strong enough to do it," Mira said. "Not anymore. The work tonight used the last of what I had." She held Elena's gaze. "There is only one person who can finish this now."

Elena already knew what she was going to say.

"You," Mira said. "You have to do it yourself. And to do it you need to understand everything I should have told you years ago." She looked at the bracelet. Then at Elena's face. "Starting with why you were chosen. And what you actually are."

The pack stood quietly around them.

The morning light came through the trees.

And Elena looked at the woman who had known her whole life and never told her the most important part of it.

Tell me, she said. All of it, right now.
