Chapter 29 Chapter 29
Chapter 29 Chapter 29
Reis’s pov
It hadn't been up to a week since Luceila's club incident and I had been trying my best to make sure that Dad never gets a wind of it, no matter what.
Not even his nose-sniffing wife, Sisilya.
My brothers haven't been around the house for a while and thinking that we've been avoiding each other since the club incident was funny. Dinner started and ended without us.
I dragged my feet into the house like a wet log after a long day at the office as I stumbled in the kitchen, looking for something to keep me afloat while I was drowning inside.
It didn't take long for me to notice her presence behind me.
“You went out?” Luceila's small voice crept behind me as I leaned against the kitchen counter.
“From the office. Why?” I plugged out a bottle from the shelf as I poured myself a drink and drowned it all at once. From a corner of my eye, I watched as she kept knitting her fingers together like she was a child.
I sighed, “I don't have all evening, Luceila. Say what it is so I can go and rest.” I told her as I finished the second glass while waiting for her to speak.
“Uhm…” She muttered, her lips trembled as she spoke. “I was wondering if you could speak to our father about me getting a job. Staying at home everyday is practically exhausting and my mother is against me getting back to school.” She knotted her fingers even more.
The few times that she had looked at me, I could see hopelessness lingering in her eyes. Was she always watching me every time I drove in and out from work? I wondered what could be going through her mind.
“You need me to speak to our father for you? Why don't you tell him yourself? I mean, he won't even hesitate to do it for you, he loves you right?” That last part was sarcastic and she was quick to notice it.
She swallowed hard, knotting her fingers again. “ Reis, that doesn't mean that I'd—”
I put my hand out to her. “Our father loves you, why don't you speak to him yourself and see? Don't come to me to do your dirty work for you.” I glared at her before hissing and going up to my room.
Her scent followed me like a curse meant to destroy me. From the corner of the stairs where I stood unnoticed, I saw how she remained standing there. I could tell that she was trying to hold back the tears that flooded her eyes.
For a flitting minute, I began to regret why I spoke to her like that but at the same time, if she wanted something, getting it wasn't supposed to be so hard, especially if it meant coming from Father.
He was one overly generous man. I guess that was how he meant Sisilya and she had him tied to her ever since but with Luceila here, I was going to try my best to stay still and be on Dad's good side.
I watched her one last time before I turned and went into my room, in the attempt to escape those pitiable eyes of hers. With the way her scent has been breaking me, I didn't think I was going to survive another round of self-control if I found her still standing by the kitchen.
I pushed the door of my room open and collapsed into my bed, basking in the warmth of it. I closed my eyes, letting myself fall asleep when my phone beeped in my pocket.
I took it out to see Peter, my colleague calling. I tapped the answer despite how tired I already was.
“A dead omega on the outskirts of the borderland? I'll meet you there in a few minutes, hold on.” I hung up and stood up from the bed, knocking every form of laziness that was trying to eat me deep as I pulled a jacket over my body and raced out of my room.
✯✯
The outskirts of the borderland wasn't the nicest place to find a dead body so when one turned up there, it was a clear sign of danger.
I drove up to where the investigators were and a strong scent hit me immediately. A scent that usually carried curses with it.
Peter was already standing behind the yellow tape, the police had arrived and made their fence around it, not letting anyone who wasn't a detective into it. I walked up to him and we shook hands.
“Any known cause of death?” I asked him as he handed his pad to me, he had taken a picture of the body. I examined the body. It was a female omega that looked young between the ages of 20 to 25.
“Possible strangulation, we are hoping it would be a cause but then we are not sure until the autopsy has been carried out. Oh shit, this is like the third body this month and the previous two had similar causes.”
I looked up from the pad, “What is it?”
He glanced at me, he paused like he was taking a moment to gather his words. “Failed spells, that's if you believe in magic.” He said dismissively, his shoulders moved with it.
Failed spells? He was speaking like this was an ancient timeline and magic was still in existence. I was still going through the picture when I noticed something weird.
She had a mark behind her neck and it looked like it had been engraved with a sharp object and for me, it was super weird.
I nudged Peter to show him the picture. “Did you see this?” He took the pad from me and examined it, zooming in and out to get a fuller picture of it.
He shook his head slowly, a sign that he was taking his time to understand the picture. “Not until now. The other bodies had the same mark but not on their necks, on different parts of their bodies. One was on her thighs and the other on her arm.”
“They are all women?” I asked, realizing what he said.
He nodded in agreement. “Yup. All of them. I don't know what sort of pattern this is but we need to get to the root of it before another body gets dumped here again.” He handed the pad back to me and went to attend to the police.
I stared at the image a little longer and suddenly it felt like I had seen it somewhere before. On the skin of someone I knew. I juggled
my brain for a few more minutes before it finally hit me.
Luceila.
