CHAPTER 284
CHAPTER 284
Blood.
Bright lights.
Darkness.
Blood coated snow under my feet as I moved with urgency towards something.
Warm hands threaded into mine, same mission in mind.
Claws out and fangs shaking from overfeeding.
Darkness
My mind had been fading in and out of consciousness time and time again.
Although my body was fully active, never sleeping, always in motion and a warm, familiar hand in my mind as we moved, but my mind never stayed awake for longer than twenty seconds.
Never enough time to remember what was happening or why.
All I knew was that blood was a constant part of my existence. Dead bodies might be there and sometimes dead animals, but the blood was a constant.
All I knew was red, pain and darkness.
My wolf was always screaming at me every time I come to.
“What are you saying?” I groaned as I began going under again.
“You're killing peo–” her voice fades out again.
My eyes flickered open, and I could tell something was different this time. I wasn't as weak as before, and I looked at my arm, chains.
I jerked up in shock, looking around to see I was in a dungeon.
“What the fuck?!” I breathed, looking around the room. It wasn't like the dirty, messy ones I knew about.
It was a metal box, the chains that tied my hands and feet were cemented into the ground.
“Riot?” I sought my wolf's mind but she was far, far away, unreachable.
Panic filled me.
“Hazel?” But she seemed to be asleep and every attempt to rouse her ended with nothing but silence that terrified me.
Nic?” I called out loud, hoping someone could explain what was happening to me.
The last clear memory I had was both of us together. Then the tiny pieces of memories I'd collected over the time I was out of it began pouring into my head.
It wasn't quite clear but what was consistent was blood and dead bodies.
That sent a shiver through my mind.
Before I could figure out more about my situation, I heard noise from outside the cage I was locked in.
Then a small window was opened and a strange face peaked through.
“Are you ready to give up your hold on her or you want us to increase the pain level?” The person asked with so much hatred on her face that I shivered.
I couldn't decipher who she was, all I saw was her melanin coloured face with braids that went behind her ear and one in front of her eye.
“What are you talking about?” I asked, turning around to see her properly even though movement hurt.
“You think you can deceive me?” The lady laughed dryly, “I've been doing this way before your kind tried to destroy this beautiful world! I've dealt with the absolute worst criminals and you dark… thing!” She spat, “cannot deceive me! I know you're the one pretending to be her!”
“What did I do?” I gasped, realising that judging by her reaction, I must have ruined what I was trying to repair.
“You are asking me what you did?” She snarled, “You really want to know?”
I nodded, my heart thundering in my chest. I wasn't sure what she was going to say but I knew it couldn't be good.
“Two thousand! Three hundred of those are children! You burnt houses, you destroyed buildings! You were chasing the end of the world with your mate, thinking this is some bonnie and Clyde shit! You have set your kind back by a thousand years, back to the dark ages. Every time somebody sees a vampire, they scream, they run even though they're sure they'll die. And you know what that causes, don't you? A vampire is like a wild dog, if you run from them, their instincts screams at you to chase! People die for being afraid! People die from staying in place! Nighttime is filled with roast of pain! Your parents have given up on ruling, dedicating their time to capturing you both. Your partner is in the next cage and uses his own claws to tear out his flesh every fucking time. That's what you did!”
I exhaled slowly, a shrilling sound screaming off in my head. I didn't have words, and guilt was too bland a word for what I felt.
Self hatred clutched at me and I slowly turned around and lay down in a fetal position.
A strangled cry escaped my throat as the darkness chose that particular moment to share it's memories with me.
Memories of me, with dark eyes ruined lives, and laughed with my mate while at it.
He was as messed up as I was, unable to reach his true self.
I howled in pain, the room filled with cries from my soul.
I forced myself to stop, crying wouldn't bring these people back.
I deserved to die and I was ready to go.
I turned back but the lady had gone.
Nausea hit me like a tidal wave and I hunched over, wretching over and over again but there was nothing to vomit.
I was empty in every way.
I forced the memories to stop. I forced the dark, slimy demon that had taken advantage of my grief to turn me into a monster.
All those years, my parents had locked me in to prevent this reality from coming to pass, I'd hated them. Hated the way they sacrificed everything to stop me from becoming this person that killed people without thought.
If I'd not listened to that girl who I couldn't even remember her name now, the ball wouldn't have been set rolling and I wouldn't be in this position, a fucked up person.
I looked at my hands, even though they were scrubbed squeaky clean, all I saw was blood, children dying in my hands.
Then I remembered my child, my Xander.
The tears and bawling returned with full strength, uncontrollable, choking sobs rocking me.
I'd nearly lost him while he was in my belly and he'd struggled so hard to remain alive.
And yet, I chose petty battles over him, and he got kidnapped.
I should have stayed back home that day, I felt the intense urge but I put everyone else above him.
Even when Kelly had insisted we go home, I focused on healing humans.
Only to turn around and murder them in their numbers, and being responsible for other people doing the same.
I ruined everything.
I heard the door of the cell open, but I didn't bother moving. I felt empty.
Until I felt hands wrap around my body.
“Oh my child,” I heard my mother's teary voice, “your son is alive. You shouldn't have given up so soon, you shouldn't have,” she sobbed.
Words like that should have made me happy, but it only made me want to drown. It's what I deserve afterall
