Chapter 24
Amelia's POV
I've never experienced so much pain, it felt like my stomach was being punctured by multiple needles in multiple places and that pain was slowly moving down to my vagina.
I felt heavy all over and the pain was so much, I could barely think properly. I had to distract myself from the pain, I had to keep myself awake so I thought of Asher.
These past months have been a bit tough for both of us. I had been introverted and I kept to myself due to the burning guilt that just kept swelling in me and he had been cold and distant.
I could feel us slowly drifting apart and I couldn't help but feel like it was my fault. I should have trusted him more, trusted in his love for me but I didn't.
I was paranoid and I was scared of the thought that he might abandon me if he found out the truth but now, I didn't even know what to think.
When my water broke, I had seen it in his eyes when he rushed in to carry me. The love and care were there, so deep I felt myself sinking into it.
I suspected that he knew it probably had his suspicions about the baby but now, I don't even know what to think. I want to trust him and rely on him but I'm too scared to do so. If he abandons me I don't know what I would do.
“Ma'am… ma'am,” I heard the nurse's voice and I got pulled back to reality, the pain in my abdomen assaulting me. I scrunched up my face and widened my eyes as I took deep breaths.
“Good ma'am, just take deep breaths.” She said as I was pushed into the ER.
As we entered, I was gently transferred into a much bigger and comfortable bed. The nurse immediately went to work, one of them pulled off my underwear and raised my legs while another nurse got a sheet to cover me.
I could see one of them putting on gloves and another was preparing some instruments. I felt a sharp jolt below and I yelped. My eyes opened wide as I felt the baby slowly moving towards my vagina.
“It's coming!!” I yelled at the nurses and they hurriedly got into position, the one in gloves positioned herself in a way that made it easy for her to assist me when the child began coming out.
“I need you to push ma'am.” She said and I took a deep breath and pushed with all I had. I felt a searing pain and I could feel that my force wasn't enough, I felt weak.
“You need to push harder ma'am.” The nurse said and I yelled as I pushed the second time.
We began a circle of the nurse telling me to push and me yelling as I did. I felt pain everywhere and I was soaked in sweat, was this how it felt to give birth or was mine just like this?
I couldn't help but be amazed at those women who willingly gave birth to lots of children. Who would want to go through this again and again?
I yelled as I pushed again, my chest heaving as I panted for air. There was a nurse beside me holding my hand and comforting me. I squeezed her hands tighter, I could feel that most of the baby was out and the nurse confirmed my thoughts when she spoke next,
“Good one ma'am, we are almost there. You just need one big push.”
I took a deep breath and then I pushed with all I had. I held on for dear life as I pushed with everything I had and a few moments later, I heard the loud cry of a baby.
I slumped back in the bed as I chuckled, I could feel tears pooling in my eyes and I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed.
I was a mother now, I did it. I was happy until I felt a small pain in my abdomen area. I looked up to find the nurse looking at me with a small smile and I immediately had a bad premonition.
“There's still one more child ma'am, we need to keep pushing.”
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I was going to have a pair of twins!!! I was ecstatic but at the same time I was terrified, I didn't think I could go through another round of that successfully.
“Don't worry ma'am, it is usually easier the second time.” The nurse said.
She lied. It wasn't easier and I felt like I was going to suffocate from pushing so much. My lungs were squeezed to their limit and my muscles were very sore. At this point, I was surprised I could even sweat.
The sheets were soaked and I was beginning to feel dizzy but I held on. I kept pushing and pushing, they were my children after all.
After what felt like an eternity, I finally heard the second cry. I was happy and relieved, it was finally over. I closed my eyes and I could already feel the tiredness taking over.
I forced myself to remain awake until the nurse brought my children to me. I held both of them in my hand, a strange bubbly feeling filled my chest and I was smiling even after everything.
They were so tiny and fragile, I wanted to protect them with all I had. I gently used a finger to touch them, I was afraid I wasn't gentle enough.
One of them grabbed my finger with his small palm and I felt my heart melt. I wanted to keep enjoying this moment but I could feel the tiredness taking over.
Finally, I couldn't hold it anymore and I felt myself slowly dozing off. The nurses took the children from me and I felt myself doze off, falling into a deep sleep.
