Chapter 25
Asher's pov
I opened the door gently as I entered the room, I had to wait for a bit because they were changing her and cleaning her body which I found stupid.
Not the cleaning of her body but the fact that I had to wait outside. I'm her husband and her mate, did they really think I hadn't seen all there was to see?
I moved close to her bed and I stared at her. She was beautiful and perfect, just like the woman I fell in love with. I couldn't help but berate myself, how could I have ever considered leaving her alone?
I sighed and I gently reached out, taking her hand into mine. It was soft and warm. She had a peaceful smile on her face and I could tell that she must have been very happy before she passed out.
I brushed a strand of hair off of her face and I gently cupped her face with my other hand. I could feel my heart pounding and my stomach fluttering. I loved her so much.
I had thought that my feelings would have dimmed a bit since all that had happened between us but it seemed to be even stronger than before. I was deeply in love with her.
But what do I do? The children were not here yet, the nurses had taken them away for bath and sterilisation but I knew they would be back soon.
I needed to talk to Amelia but she was currently asleep. I wanted to ask her to tell me the truth this time, I wanted to promise her that I would be there for her no matter what.
But I also wanted to confirm the truth right this instant, it was like only then would I finally be free of this aching feeling, only then would I be able to move in and truly accept Amelia for all she was.
I felt like accepting these children even though they turned out to not be mine would prove to Amelia that my love for her was still that strong.
But I didn't want to do anything we would both end up regretting so I pushed the nagging idea that I should conduct a blood test on the twins out of my mind.
I really needed Amelia to be able to trust me again. I don't want our relationship to be based on a lie. I've experienced it before and it was an awful and extremely short relationship.
I gently squeezed Amelia's hands in mine before pulling a chair close to the bed. I held up her hand and gently placed a kiss on it.
I sat there in silence as I waited for the twins to be brought in. After about fifteen minutes, the nurse finally brought them in. She brought them to me and I gently held both of them in one of my arms each.
They looked so tiny and so fragile and they were wrapped up in layers of sheets to make them warm.
The moment I laid my eyes on them, I knew I didn't need any DNA test to prove the father. It was as clear as the blue skies that they belonged to Damien.
Their eyes were piercing silver, a colour that wasn't generic. I had only ever seen them on one other person.
I smiled gently and I felt a bit relieved. I finally knew the answer to the question that had been bothering me for a long time. I had thought I would be angrier but I wasn't.
One of the twins reached out his hands and I moved my face closer. He held my face with both tiny hands and he felt around as if his eyes weren't enough to take in the details of my appearance.
I felt my heart skip at the touch and I smiled a bit. They weren't even mine and yet I felt this way. I sighed, it seemed like I had no choice. It wasn't like I hadn't made up my mind to treat them like mine in the first place.
I sat with the twins as they fell asleep. A few hours later, Amelia woke up. She groggily sat up and when she saw me she smiled a bit.
“Hi… I would come to you but ..” I gestured at the twins in my arms and she giggled. She looked at me for a bit with a smile on her face,
“You look good being a father.” She said and I paused a bit.
“I hope I'm a better father than I was a husband,” I replied and she looked away.
“I'm really sorry,” I said to her and she looked at me. She smiled a bit,
“Me too.”
It was quiet for a moment and then she gestured for me to hand over one of the twins. I gently got up and handed one of them over as quietly as possible but it failed, the one I handed over woke up and cooed a little.
The moment Amelia saw the twin, her eyes widened and she immediately burst into tears. I smiled gently and then I got up and placed the twins in their cradles.
I walked up to Amelia to console her and tell her that I was fine with it, I was sure she had seen those eyes and she knew I wouldn't have mistaken them.
The moment I placed my hand on her shoulder, she shrugged me off. I sighed and stood beside her for a while as she wept and then I decided to give her some space.
I walked out of the room and into the waiting area. I sighed as I ran my hand through my hair. I knew it was going to take time for her to accept my words, I just had to be patient with her.
I began to head to the vending machine to get myself a cold drink but on my way there, I saw an unexpected guest.
Dressed in a slutty red gown and looking as mesmerising as ever was the one person I didn't want to see,
“Isabella. What do you want.”
