Chapter 23

Asher's pov

I rushed into Amelia's room to find her being supported by the maid. She was in pain and I could smell the liquid on the floor. I widened my eyes, this had happened earlier than expected.

I rushed to her and picked her up, carrying her bridal style. I ran out of the room as fast as I could and headed for where my car was parked.

“I'll gather all the necessities and meet you there.” The head maid shouted at me but I could barely hear her.

I kicked the door open and left the castle. Before I arrived there, the door was already open and the car was running. The guard had opened the gate and one of them joined me in carrying Amelia to the car faster.

I sat her in the car and I made sure her seat belt was on. I rushed to the front and entered the vehicle, driving off in a flash.

I sped towards the hospital. I wanted to go to the nearest hospital but I couldn't, I wasn't about to entrust the life of Amelia into the hands of someone I didn't trust.

I drove faster, swerving and overtaking vehicles, my hands gripped the steering wheel harder and I accelerated even more.

My speed must have been around eighty kilometres per hour. The vehicles on the road passed by in a blur and in about twenty minutes, we arrived at the hospital.

I rushed to the back of the vehicle to pick Amelia up. I carried her and rushed into the hospital. The moment I entered, the nurses immediately rushed towards me, one of them pushing a bed.

I gently placed Amelia in the bed as the nurses rushed her into the ER. I followed them but I was stopped at the door and asked to wait in the waiting room.

“What do you mean I can't go in?! She's my wife!!” I shouted at the nurse. Husbands were supposed to be allowed in, it was a child's birth, not a surgery.

“I'm sorry sir but you don't look stable and we can't have you in there. It might affect the state of the mother and hence affect the childbirth process.” The nurse calmly replied but I felt even angrier.

“That's bullshit, she's already stressed out that the child came earlier than it was supposed to! She needs me to be there for her!” I battled against the nurse but she firmly asked me to stay out.

“What do you mean early? Your wife's pregnancy is due on time. This is the eleventh month.” She said before she walked into the room.

I stood frozen and my mind was blank. Eleven months…. Eleven months? I.. I thought it had only been six or was it seven?

I stood still for a long time and then I went to the vending machine. I absentmindedly inserted money in it and I retrieved a can of chilled cola.

I drank it all in one go but it did nothing, I felt nothing. I would kill for a bottle of liquor right now. I sighed as I looked towards the ER, I felt miserable.

Amelia had been pregnant for eleven months and I hadn't even known. These last few months, I have been cold and absent. I had blamed it all on Amelia, she was the one acting all strange but I also blamed myself.

The previous me would have fought with everything I had to make sure Amelia was fine, to make sure she was safe and unbothered. I would have made sure she was happy but I didn't.

The me of now was silly and immature, I had let petty reasons come between us and I let my guilt and envy eat me up from the inside. I was a disgrace.

I could only imagine what Amelia must have felt like, she must have been angry and devastated at me. She must have been disappointed.

In that regard, what different was I from Damien? I might have even been worse than him after all, he didn't give Amelia the false hope that everything would be fine.

I walked towards the wall and I rested on it, I slowly slid to the ground and sat on the floor. I watched as the nurses hurried in and out of the ER. I could see different expressions on their faces but I was too ashamed to approach any of them.

I was the husband who didn't even know when his pregnant wife was going to give birth. They all probably looked down on me.

I deserve it though and I had to make sure that I become a better person for my sake and Amelia's sake. And also for the sake of my child.

I smiled a bit at the thought that I was about to become a father, it was a bit baffling and I couldn't help but feel anxious. I was already a terrible husband, who was to say I'd do a better job as a father?

I was worried and I spent the next hour or two pondering. When I finally came out of my deep thoughts, I had made up my mind to be a better husband and father for Amelia and our child.

I would make sure neither of them ever felt alone, I'll always be present and I would make sure to protect them with all I have.

I got up from the floor and as I was about to approach the ER, the nurse came out. She had a placid expression and I couldn't read her.

She walked up to me, the disdain in her eyes was evident but I don't mind. Right now, my priority is Amelia and the child. Moreover, I deserve it.

“So? How's my wife and my child?” I asked her anxiously.

“Don't you mean children? Your wife just gave birth to a pair of twins. Congratulations Mr Asher.” The nurse smiled at him.
