Chapter 22
Asher's pov
It's been about eight months since the day I decided to start living for myself and this hasn't been going so great.
Amelia was getting more paranoid by the day and it was taking a toll on the relationship. I loved her very much and I wanted to fight for her love and attention, but it was getting harder and harder to do so by the day.
A lot of things have happened this past few months. For one, I heard that Damien and Isabella were now couples.
I had been angry when I found out, I guessed I still loved her after all. But now I have gotten over it. It wasn't in my place to dictate what she should do with her life.
These past few months, due to the awkwardness between me and Amelia, I had asked her not to leave the castle grounds because some people might start keeping an eye on her.
She happily obliged.
I strolled towards the gate, surprised to see Isabella there. My gaze narrowed but I said nothing as she approached me.
“What do you want this time? I'll have you know that I don't fuck in public.” I started with a joke, surprising Isabella and myself.
“I thought you would send me out the moment you saw me.” She replied.
“I thought I would too, but as you can see, it seems like the hatred I thought I had for you was not as deep.” I mocked.
“I never knew you hated me.” She said, her tone a bit down. I was amused, I never thought she could get sad.
“You are the root of my problems, of course, I hate you.”
“What do you mean I'm the root of all your problems?” She stopped looking at me confusedly.
I also stopped, facing her and looking her dead in the eye, trying to figure out if she was joking or if she really didn't know that she caused all of this. I felt my anger rise up as I saw that she really was confused.
“Wow! You really are a bitch, a selfish bitch. You are the reason why I and Damien are mortal enemies, and if that never happened, all of the shitty events that followed wouldn't have either.” I ranted.
Her eyes widened in shock.
“What do you mean? Just because I didn't want to choose between the two of you, how does that make me the bad guy?”
“You are the bad guy because you were thinking only about yourself! If you had chosen, although our relationship would have been shaky for a bit, by now it would have been even stronger and better!” I yelled
“But I later chose you!!” She yelled back
“THAT WAS AFTER THE DAMAGE HAD BEEN DONE!” I roared. I breathed heavily, my fury bubbling within me. She had chosen me as a second choice, and that still hurts till now.
“Then why didn't you try to amend your relationship?” She asked in a soft voice.
“Because I didn't know how to,” I replied, my voice low as I sighed. Emotions that I didn't know I was hiding welling up within me. I didn't know why, but for some reason, I felt like something bad was happening and every night, I had dreams about my childhood.
I missed them, I missed my friends from that time. I find myself crying whenever I wake up from them and I feel a longing in my heart. I was scared.
We both went quiet for a while, saying nothing. A myriad of emotions were running through my head and I was sure Isabella was thinking of her stuff as well.
“It's not too late to make amends. You never know, something might happen soon that would make you unable to for the rest of your life.” Isabella spoke after a while
“What do you mean?” I questioned, feeling the familiar pang of fear I had in me whenever I woke up from those dreams as she said those words. She was hiding something from me, she knew something but she wasn't telling me.
“What do you know?” I asked her, she looked away, staring at the sky. Something told me it was about Damien.
“It's not in my place to tell, but one thing I can tell you is that your bride was pregnant before she escaped from Damien's castle.”
I felt my bones chill as I looked at her coldly.
“It isn't in your place to tell me about your secret but it's in your place to tell me about someone else's?” I questioned coldly.
“I don't care about others.” She shrugged.
She looked at me for a while, chuckling as she turned around to leave. I stared at her coldly as she left. I didn't want to believe what she said, after all, she never liked Amelia, but deep down, I still questioned if the child was mine.
I sighed, shaking the thought out of my head as I began to head back into the castle. I had to start preparing for the birth of the child, it was just a few months left.
As I walked into the castle, a maid ran towards me. I furrowed my brows, wondering what was wrong. Upon getting to my front, she began speaking without the usual greeting.
“The head maid sent me, Lady Amelia's water just broke.”
