After a few rounds of drinks, Olivia received a phone call and walked out with a panicked expression.
Seeing this, I felt inexplicably uneasy and decided to use the excuse of going to the restroom to follow her out.
I followed behind Olivia, carefully hiding myself, afraid she would see me.
I saw her turn a corner and head to the hidden staircase, and then a man's voice came from inside.
"I told you, I just want to see the child!"
"That's not your child! It has nothing to do with you!"
Olivia's voice was filled with urgency.
Curious, I quietly peeked out and saw the man's face.
He looked somewhat familiar, and after thinking about it, my eyes widened. This man resembled Liz!
"Olivia, stop lying to me! You were already pregnant when you left me!"
The man's voice was agitated, and he grabbed Olivia's shoulder!
"Let go!"
Olivia struggled fiercely and slapped the man across the face.
"Where were you when I wanted to marry you? You kept making excuses. Now that I have my own family, you come to ruin it. How shameless can you be!"
Tears streaked Olivia's face, and the hatred in her eyes was clear.
I was stunned. So Joseph wasn't Liz's biological father! No wonder Olivia looked so haggard; she must be tormented inside.
"I told you, I had my reasons, Olivia. Why can't you trust me just once!"
It was clear the man really cared about Olivia. Even after being slapped, his first reaction was to explain, not retaliate.
"Enough, Jerry Nelson. I don't want to talk to you anymore. That child is my husband's. If you keep pestering me, don't blame me for being rude!"
With that, Olivia turned and left, not wanting to argue with Jerry any longer.
I hid in a room until Olivia left before coming out.
Learning such shocking news, I felt overwhelmed. I walked to the hallway to clear my head with some fresh air.
Joseph betrayed me and was with Olivia. I originally thought he married Olivia because of her pregnancy and family background. But now it seems Joseph was the one who got played!
He always thought of himself as handsome and charming, but in the eyes of the wealthy, he was just another pawn!
After cooling off, I felt more clear-headed and returned to the banquet.
When it was time to leave, Joseph, who had drunk too much, insisted on seeing Howard and me off.
His face was flushed, and his eyes were glazed.
"Kathie, I heard you can't have kids. Do you want me to have one for you to adopt?"
His words were so abrupt that I could feel Howard's arm trembling slightly beside me, clearly trying to control his anger.
I tugged on his hand and shook my head, not wanting to argue with a drunk.
Moreover, this drunk was unknowingly playing the role of someone else's child's father.
Thinking of this, I looked at Joseph with pity.
"Sir, get a room upstairs. This man has had too much to drink. Take him up."
I grabbed a nearby waiter and slipped him a couple of bills as a tip.
Joseph was taken away, and Jessica apologized to me with an embarrassed look. I shook my head, not intending to make a fuss.
