"Your mother is still alive?" Nyxoria asked, her brows furrowed in confusion. "How? I thought she was dead since no one ever talks about her."
Tharros let out a heavy sigh. "She’s not dead… but she’s not here."
Nyxoria’s curiosity deepened. "If she’s not in this castle, then where is she?" She asked.
"There are a lot of things I can’t say now, my beautiful Ria," Tharros said, his gaze steady. "But be rest assured, I will tell you when the time is right."
Nyxoria frowned. "What’s there not to tell? If she’s alive, where is she? Why are you here alone? You told me about your father so easily, but you can’t tell me about your mother? Whatever it is, just tell me. Don’t hide it from me."
Tharros’ jaw tightened. "I will tell you when it’s time," he said firmly. "By then, you will understand."
Nyxoria opened her mouth to protest, but he cut her off.
"Do you trust me?" he asked, his gaze piercing.
She hesitated for a second but then nodded. "I trust you, Tharros."
"Then drop the topic. I don’t want to talk about my mother."
Nyxoria studied his face, searching for answers in his expression. "You hate your mother?"
Tharros looked away, his gaze shifting to something in the distance.
Nyxoria smirked. "I knew it. Why do you hate her? You killed your father and now you hate your mother. Why?"
"Drop it, Nyxoria," Tharros warned, his voice tight. "I told you, I’ll explain everything when the time is right."
"But I want to know, Tharros. No sane person would kill or hate their parents for no reason
"If you truly trust me, like you said, you’ll drop it," he said, his tone darker now.
Nyxoria crossed her arms. "But as your bride-to-be, I need to know everything abo—"
She didn’t get to finish.
"I said drop it!" Tharros bellowed, his voice echoing unnaturally.
The air around them darkened, the sun swallowed by darker clouds. A sudden roar of thunder cracked the sky, and a bolt of lightning streaked toward her. But just before it could strike, it halted midair, dispersing into nothing.
The sky cleared instantly, as if nothing had happened, but Nyxoria felt the weight of his power in the air.
For a moment, she was stunned, her heart hammering. Then she scoffed, her anger rising. "Why are you getting angry? I just wanted to know more about you, about your family. I never got to grow up with mine, so of course I’m concerned."
She folded her arms, resisting the urge to walk away. That would be childish.
Tharros ran a hand through his hair, exhaling deeply. His fists unclenched, and the tension in his body eased. He looked at her with regret. He had nearly killed her with his bolt of lightning and had just stopped it in time.
"I’m sorry, Ria," he murmured. "I shouldn’t have lashed out at you. My family is… complicated. And thinking about them, especially my mother—brings back bad memories. But I promise I will tell you everything when the time is right. And when I do, you will understand. I am so sorry."
Nyxoria let out a small sigh, her anger cooling down.
"I’m sorry for pushing you when you weren’t ready to talk," she admitted. "I will be more careful with my words next time."
Tharros gave a small smile. "Just give me time. I’ll tell you everything."
Nyxoria nodded, then smiled back.
At that moment, Vyrelen appeared, his shadows swirling around him before dispersing into thin air.
Nyxoria bit her lip, trying not to laugh when she saw Dika in Vyrelen’s arms.
"Put me down this instant! Let go of me!!" Dika yelled, thrashing in his hold.
Vyrelen obliged without hesitation, only, instead of placing her down gently, he dropped her.
With a loud thud, Dika landed on the ground, groaning. She stood up to her feet, brushing herself off as if the fall hadn’t hurt. But the glare she shot Vyrelen could have burned through ste
"You are mean," she muttered under her breath before moving to stand beside Nyxoria. She glared at her friend, daring her with her eyes to laugh.
Nyxoria, however, was barely holding it together.
Vyrelen ignored them and turned to Tharros, who gave him permission to speak. He bowed down.
"I went through her belongings after putting her to sleep, and I found this, my Emperor," Vyrelen said, handing Tharros a middle size pink pouch.
Tharros opened it, pulling out a dried leaf. He held it to his nose and took a sniff. His expression darkened instantly.
"This is what I tasted in the food Vyrelen. Too bitter."
Nyxoria frowned, confused. "What’s going on, Tharros?" She glanced between him and Vyrelen.
"Tharros took a deep breath. "Mary."
Nyxoria’s eyes narrowed. "What about Mary? Did she cause trouble?"
Instead of answering right away, Tharros lifted the dried leaf. "Do you know what this is?"
Nyxoria shook her head. "No, I don’t."
"It is called whisperleaf," Tharros said. "It’s used to erase memories. People who want to forget something, or make someone else forget, mix it into their food or drink. Too much if it will make someone loose his or her memories forever."
Nyxoria’s stomach twisted uneasily. "What are you trying to say?"
Tharros’ expression was unreadable. "Mary has been putting this in your food."
The words hit her like a slap.
"We don’t know when she started, but I’m certain this is why you can’t remember anything from your childhood."
Nyxoria was speechless, shaking her head in denial. "No. That’s impossible. Mary wouldn’t do that to me."
"She did," Tharros said firmly.
"She wouldn’t!" Nyxoria snapped. "She has been with me since I was young, she has taken care of me, protected me! She would never do something like this!"
Tharros exhaled slowly before standing up. His eyes glowed dangerously.
"Then let’s go and ask her," he said, a wicked grin stretching across his face. "My hands are itching for some torture. I can’t wait to hear her scream as I remove her ribs one by one."
