Achilles' heel
Annabelle woke up to a soft knock on her door. She rubbed her eyes as the familiar figure of Giana stepped in, a calm smile on her face.
“Good morning, Annabelle,” Giana greeted. “The Don has taken care of some things, so you’ll be allowed to go to school today.”
Annabelle blinked in surprise. “Really? I can go back?”
Giana nodded, and Annabelle felt a wave of relief wash over her. The past two days had been overwhelming, and the idea of stepping back into her usual routine brought her some comfort.
“Thank you, Giana,” she said, genuinely grateful.
After a quick shower, she dressed in a simple blouse and jeans, brushing through her hair and letting it fall loosely. Just as she was about to leave, Giana brought in a breakfast tray.
“Here’s something to eat,” Giana said. “The Don insisted that you don’t leave on an empty stomach.”
Annabelle smiled. It felt strange to think of Riccardo’s caring side, given his usual cold demeanor. “Thank you,” she murmured, digging into the eggs and toast.
Once she’d finished eating, she grabbed her bag, feeling a rush of excitement to be out in the real world again. She made her way down the hall, her footsteps echoing as she neared the front door. And there, waiting beside a sleek black car, was Riccardo.
He stood tall, his usual stern expression softened by something she couldn’t quite place.
“Ready?” he asked, his voice steady as he held the car door open for her.
Annabelle nodded, clutching her bag tightly. “Yes, thank you… for everything.”
Riccardo gave a slight nod, his gaze unreadable. “School is important. I didn’t want you to fall behind.”
She settled into the passenger seat, and they drove in silence, the scenery rolling by in a blur of green and gold as the morning light filtered through the trees. Riccardo kept his focus on the road, but his presence was comforting, steady, as if he were an anchor in her chaotic new life.
After a few moments, she spoke up. “Riccardo… I know I don’t really belong in your world. But thank you for helping me. I appreciate it.”
He glanced over, his expression unreadable but somehow softer. “You’re doing well, Annabelle. Just… stay focused.”
She nodded, comforted by his words even if she didn’t fully understand them.
When they finally pulled up in front of the school, she could feel her nerves creeping back in. Students were milling about, chatting in groups, and she spotted a few familiar faces.
“Be careful,” Riccardo said, his tone serious. “If anything happens, call me immediately.”
Annabelle nodded, reassured by his protectiveness. “I will. Thank you.”
She stepped out of the car, slinging her bag over her shoulder, and made her way through the front gates. She felt a mixture of relief and nervousness. Would anyone notice she’d been gone? Would she feel like she’d missed out on too much?
Her thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice. “Annabelle!”
She turned to see Laura, her one close friend in college, hurrying toward her. Laura’s face was filled with concern as she wrapped Annabelle in a tight hug.
“Where have you been?” Laura asked, pulling back to look at her. “You just disappeared!”
Annabelle forced a small smile. “It’s a long story… I had some family issues to deal with.”
Laura raised an eyebrow, clearly curious but respectful enough not to pry. “I’m just glad you’re okay. You missed a lot.”
The two walked together to their first class, chatting and catching up on everything Annabelle had missed over the past few days. Laura filled her in on assignments and the latest gossip, her lively presence making Annabelle feel almost normal again.
Classes flew by in a blur, and for a while, Annabelle allowed herself to forget about the world she’d been dragged into. At lunch, she and Laura found a quiet spot under a tree, sharing stories and laughing. It felt like a return to normalcy, even if just for a little while.
But Annabelle couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched. She glanced around, her eyes scanning the campus, but everything looked ordinary. She pushed the feeling aside, chalking it up to her imagination.
Just as the day was ending, she felt her phone buzz. It was a message from Riccardo: I’ll be waiting at the entrance in ten minutes.
Annabelle’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly said goodbye to Laura, who gave her a curious look but didn’t ask any questions. As she walked toward the front of the school, she couldn’t help but feel the weight of her double life settling on her shoulders.
Riccardo’s car was parked by the entrance when she arrived. She slipped into the passenger seat, glancing over at him. He didn’t say anything, just nodded and started driving.
They rode in silence for a while, but she sensed a tension in him she hadn’t noticed earlier.
“Is… everything okay?” she asked cautiously.
Riccardo’s jaw tightened slightly. “There’s been some activity from the rival clan. Nothing to worry about, but I’m handling it.”
Annabelle swallowed, her mind flashing back to the attack a few days ago. She hadn’t allowed herself to dwell on it, but the fear had lingered in the back of her mind.
“Are… are they dangerous?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Riccardo’s gaze hardened. “They’re persistent, but they’re no match for us. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
His words were firm, and yet there was something in his tone that sent a chill down her spine. She nodded, trusting him even if she didn’t fully understand the depths of the world he lived in.
As they pulled into the Moretti estate, Annabelle felt a strange sense of both safety and unease. The mansion loomed ahead, its grand architecture casting long shadows in the fading light.
Inside, she was greeted by the familiar, cold elegance of the Clan’s world. Giana met them at the door, bowing slightly to Riccardo before ushering Annabelle inside.
Annabelle made her way up to her room, but as she walked through the dimly lit hallways, she caught a snippet of conversation coming from one of the rooms. She recognized Luca’s voice, speaking in low, urgent tones.
“She’s still vulnerable. We can’t afford any more mistakes, Riccardo. The rival clan is watching her closely.”
Annabelle froze, her heart pounding as she strained to hear more. Riccardo’s response was too low to make out, but his tone was tense, unyielding.
Silently, Annabelle backed away, her mind racing. Were they really watching her? She swallowed, feeling a surge of fear mixed with confusion.
As she slipped into her room, her gaze landed on the faint light streaming through the window, illuminating the dark corners of her thoughts. She wrapped her arms around herself, feeling both the weight of Riccardo’s protection and the eerie reality of her situation.
Unknown to her, across town, members of the rival clan gathered in a shadowy warehouse, murmuring in low voices.
A tall, broad-shouldered man with a scar running down his cheek addressed the group, his gaze icy. “Riccardo has taken in a new girl,” he said, his voice low and menacing. “Weakness is something we don’t forgive in this world. She’s his Achilles' heel.”
The others nodded, a sinister understanding passing between them. They had found a way to get to Riccardo, and now, all they needed was the right moment.
Back in her room, Annabelle shivered, feeling a chill she couldn’t explain as the shadows deepened around her. She didn’t know it yet, but the danger she’d thought she’d left behind was closer than ever.
