Determined

The next morning, Annabelle woke to the sound of a soft knock. She blinked, adjusting to the gentle glow of sunlight filtering through the curtains. Giana stood in the doorway, her expression unusually tense.

“Annabelle,” Giana said, her voice low. “The Don wants to see you in the main hall.”

Annabelle sat up, a jolt of nerves making her heart beat a little faster. "Now?" she asked, her voice cracking slightly.

Giana nodded. “Yes, and…” She hesitated, glancing over Annabelle’s clothes. “I’d suggest something… presentable.”

Annabelle’s curiosity grew, but she didn’t ask more. Instead, she pulled herself out of bed, dressing quickly in a simple white blouse and fitted black pants that felt just formal enough without being too stuffy. After tying her hair back, she took a deep breath and followed Giana through the winding halls of the mansion.

The closer they got to the main hall, the more Annabelle noticed the faint hum of voices echoing down the corridor. A wave of scents drifted her way, hints of cologne, polished leather, and the distant tang of espresso. The soft murmur of voices grew louder, accompanied by the low clink of glassware and the shuffle of footsteps.

As they approached, Giana gave her a small, reassuring smile before opening the door to the main hall. Annabelle stepped inside, her gaze immediately landing on Riccardo standing by the far end of a long mahogany table. He was dressed in his usual dark suit, exuding an air of quiet authority that filled the room. Beside him stood Luca, along with several others she recognized from fleeting encounters in the mansion.

“Annabelle,” Riccardo’s voice was calm, yet carried a weight that made her stand a little straighter.

She nodded, her eyes darting from one face to another. To her right was Dante Lombardi, his expression as unreadable as always, his dark hair swept back and his sharp eyes fixed on her with a hint of scrutiny. Next to him stood Rafael Romano, a tall figure with a calm intensity, wearing a crisp white shirt that contrasted with the ink-black tattoos visible on his forearms.

On her left were Sergio Rossi, who was leaning back in his chair with a smirk, and the women she had seen before but never formally met, Camilla Mantova, Chiara Vicenza, and Nicoletta Lecce. Each had their own aura, from Camilla’s icy grace to Chiara’s sharp-eyed vigilance, while Nicoletta’s soft smile seemed a rare warmth in the otherwise intense group.

As Annabelle stood there, unsure of what to say, Riccardo’s voice broke the silence. “Everyone, this is Annabelle.” He glanced at her briefly before addressing the others. “She’s new to our world and will need time to adjust, but I expect each of you to show her the same respect you would for any member of our family.”

Sergio chuckled under his breath, exchanging a glance with Dante. “A weak girl in the family, huh? This should be… interesting,” he said, his voice laced with amusement.

Annabelle shifted uncomfortably, heat creeping up her neck, but Riccardo’s gaze was firm as he looked at Sergio. “She’s here under my protection. That’s all you need to know.”

Camilla folded her arms, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Protection or not, Riccardo, she’s going to have to learn the ropes if she wants to survive around here.”

“I’m trying,” Annabelle said quietly, her voice barely audible, but strong enough to catch Camilla’s attention.

Riccardo tilted his head, a hint of approval in his gaze. “And she will continue to try. But she won’t be alone in it.”

Luca, who had been silent up until now, nodded. “The Don's word is law here. Let’s not forget that.”

The room grew quiet, an unspoken agreement settling among them. Riccardo turned his attention back to Annabelle, his voice softer yet still carrying that underlying authority. “Come with me,” he said, gesturing toward the double doors that led outside.

Annabelle followed him, her steps echoing across the marble floor as they exited the room. The fresh air greeted her as they stepped out onto the terrace, the sprawling gardens stretching out before them. The sunlight cast a golden hue over the vibrant flowers, and the faint scent of lavender drifted in the breeze.

Riccardo stopped by the edge of the terrace, gazing out at the view. “Do you know why I brought you here, Annabelle?”

She looked up at him, her brow furrowing slightly. “To… meet everyone?”

He glanced down at her, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “That, and to show you what it means to stand your ground. In this world, strength isn’t just about physical power; it’s about resilience.”

Annabelle’s eyes followed his gaze over the gardens. “I don’t feel very strong, Riccardo. They see that… and they look at me like I don’t belong.”

Riccardo’s expression softened, his voice steady. “Strength doesn’t come naturally to everyone. But if you want to stay, you’ll have to find it within yourself.”

She swallowed, nodding. “I understand.”

He gave a slight nod. “Good. Now, come with me. There’s something else I want to show you.”

They walked through the gardens, past rows of roses and ivy-covered walls, until they reached a small training area hidden by a line of tall hedges. Several punching bags and wooden dummies were scattered around, along with a mat set up for sparring.

“This is where some of our members train,” Riccardo explained. “It’s not about teaching you to fight, yet. It’s about helping you learn control and focus.”

Annabelle looked around, feeling a strange mix of intimidation and excitement. She took a step forward, her fingers brushing against the cool leather of a punching bag. “You think I can do this?”

“I know you can,” Riccardo replied simply.

The sound of footsteps made them both turn. Luca appeared, his usual stoic expression unchanged as he approached. “Everything’s in place, Don,” he said, then nodded to Annabelle. “I heard you’re joining us for training.”

Annabelle hesitated, glancing between Riccardo and Luca. “I… guess so.”

Luca’s eyes held a glint of amusement. “We’ll start slow, then. You don’t have to worry.”

Riccardo patted her shoulder, his gaze reassuring. “I’ll be here as well. Take it one step at a time.”

Annabelle took a deep breath, nodding. Luca stepped forward, guiding her through the basic stances, showing her how to keep her balance and move with control. The process was slow and methodical, each instruction broken down in a way that felt manageable, even for a complete beginner.

As they worked, Annabelle felt her initial tension start to ease. She focused on each movement, the feel of her muscles responding to Luca’s guidance, the rhythm of her breathing steadying. She hadn’t realized how much she enjoyed the feeling of being grounded in her own body until now.

After a while, Riccardo’s phone buzzed, pulling his attention away. He glanced at the screen, his expression tightening as he read the message.

“Annabelle,” he said, his voice tinged with urgency. “I need to handle something. Luca will stay with you. Just… keep practicing.”

Annabelle nodded, watching as he walked off, his posture tense and his gaze focused. She could sense something serious had come up, but she pushed the thought aside, returning her attention to Luca’s instructions.

Luca stepped back, crossing his arms as he observed her stance. “Not bad,” he commented, a rare smile tugging at his lips. “You’re picking this up quickly.”

Annabelle allowed herself a small smile in return, feeling a spark of pride. “Thank you. It… feels good, actually.”

Luca nodded, his gaze steady. “Stay focused. Control your movements, but don’t overthink it.”

She followed his advice, striking the punching bag with a bit more confidence each time. The rhythm of it, the repetitive motion, felt strangely soothing.

But as she continued, a sudden thought crept into her mind, the rival clan Riccardo had mentioned before. The people who had already tried to harm her once. She paused, her gaze lowering as uncertainty flickered across her face.

“What’s on your mind?” Luca asked, noticing her hesitation.

She bit her lip, glancing up at him. “Are… are they still a threat? The ones who attacked before?”

Luca’s expression hardened, but he nodded. “Yes. They’re watching, waiting. But the Don is doing everything he can to protect you.”

The weight of his words settled over her, a reminder of the complex and dangerous world she’d stepped into. She straightened, taking a deep breath. “Then I’ll keep training. I don’t want to be a weakness for him.”

Luca gave her an approving nod. “Good. Keep that attitude. It’ll serve you well.”

As she returned to her training, the memory of Riccardo’s promise echoed in her mind. She was determined to stand her ground, even if it meant facing the shadows that lurked just beyond her sight.
