Proving Her Worth

Annabelle woke the next morning with an ache that settled deep in her bones. Her hands felt rough and sore from yesterday’s work, trembling as she lifted herself from the bed. Every muscle in her body protested as she stood, the exhaustion from the previous day still clinging to her like a heavy blanket. She hadn’t been in the Moretti mansion long, but each day felt like a new test, an uphill climb where every misstep was watched, noted, and judged.

As she splashed cold water on her face, she recalled Riccardo’s words: “If you want to survive here, you’ll have to prove yourself worthy of being part of the Moretti Famiglia.” The weight of those words lingered, a reminder of the standards she was expected to meet, even as the rest of the Clan looked down on her.

Today, she decided, would be different. She wouldn’t let their disdain weigh her down. She was determined to show Riccardo, and herself,.that she could handle whatever tasks they threw her way.

A soft knock at her door broke her thoughts. When she opened it, she found Giana, the maid who often brought her breakfast. Giana’s eyes flitted over Annabelle’s face with a brief look of sympathy, but she quickly masked it and handed her a small slip of paper.

“This is your schedule for today, Miss,” Giana said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper, before turning to leave.

Annabelle glanced down at the paper, her eyes scanning the list of tasks. Verona had clearly taken no mercy on her; her day was filled with errands and chores scattered across the sprawling estate. She took a deep breath, pocketed the list, and set off, determined to tackle each task head-on.

Her first stop was the training grounds outside the mansion. The sun had just begun to rise, casting long shadows across the yard. The air felt cool against her skin, and the scent of fresh grass mixed with the earthy smell of dirt greeted her. The sounds of clanging weights and the grunts of men training filled the space, echoing in the stillness of the morning. She could see several soldiers wrapping up their drills, their muscles glistening with sweat as they exchanged banter and laughter.

As Annabelle bent down to gather discarded items from the training area, she noticed a few of the high-ranking members observing her. Rafael and Sergio stood to one side, their eyes fixed on her with thinly veiled disdain. Rafael crossed his arms, a smirk on his lips as he watched her struggle to lift a heavy training dummy.

“You’d think they’d hire someone competent for this,” Rafael murmured loud enough for her to hear.

Sergio chuckled, his gaze cold and dismissive. “It’s amusing to see her trying, though.”

Annabelle’s cheeks burned, but she kept her focus on her work, refusing to look up at them. She could feel their stares digging into her, could almost hear their thoughts about how she didn’t belong here. But she bit her lip and focused on moving each piece of equipment to its place, keeping her movements steady even though her arms screamed in protest.

A sharp whistle sounded from the direction of the main building, and Annabelle turned to see Camilla walking toward her. Dressed in a sleek black suit with gold detailing, Camilla exuded an air of command that Annabelle had come to associate with the high-ranking members of the Clan. Her eyes, however, held none of the mockery she’d seen in Rafael and Sergio’s; instead, they held a kind of challenge, as though she were testing Annabelle with her gaze alone.

“Pick up the pace,” Camilla ordered, her voice low but firm. “We don’t have all day.”

Annabelle nodded and moved faster, gathering the remaining items as quickly as she could. Once she’d cleared the grounds, Camilla nodded in approval, a glint of satisfaction in her eyes.

“Not bad,” she said, folding her arms. “But don’t think that means you’re keeping up. There’s still a long way to go.”

Annabelle felt a spark of determination light up within her. She straightened, meeting Camilla’s gaze. “I understand.”

Camilla arched an eyebrow, a small smile tugging at her lips. “Let’s see if you do.”

With that, she turned and strode off, her heels clicking against the stone path as she disappeared around the corner. Annabelle exhaled, wiping the sweat from her forehead. She knew this was only the beginning, but the faintest hint of Camilla’s approval made her resolve even stronger.

Her next task was in the kitchen, assisting the cooks in preparing the midday meal. As she entered, the scents of fresh herbs and roasted meat filled the air, mixing together in a warm embrace. The kitchen was large, with bright lights overhead casting a shine on the polished countertops and stainless steel appliances. The sound of pots clanging and knives chopping created a lively rhythm, a stark contrast to the cold looks she had received outside.

“Make yourself useful,” the head chef grunted, barely looking at her as he pointed toward a pile of vegetables waiting to be peeled.

Annabelle grabbed a knife and started peeling, her hands moving quickly as she worked. The kitchen staff moved around her with practiced efficiency, each person focused on their task, barely sparing her a glance. But as she peeled and chopped, she felt a strange sense of belonging. The chaos around her somehow soothed her nerves. It was a familiar rhythm, one that reminded her of her own kitchen back home, where she would help her mother prepare meals.

“Careful with that knife, girl,” one of the cooks called out. “You don’t want to lose a finger.”

“Right,” Annabelle replied, her voice barely above a whisper. She concentrated on her task, her heart racing as she recalled the way Riccardo had warned her that the Mafia did not tolerate weakness.

After finishing in the kitchen, Annabelle was sent to the garden to help tend to the flowers. The garden was a lush, green space that overflowed with colorful blooms, their bright hues painting a picture of beauty amidst the heaviness of the mansion. She knelt on the soft earth, the scent of fresh soil filling her lungs as she trimmed the overgrown plants.

As she worked, she overheard Camilla and Nicoletta, another high-ranking member, chatting nearby. Their voices floated through the air like wisps of smoke.

“Have you seen how she struggles?” Nicoletta said, her tone dripping with disdain. “She can’t even handle simple tasks.”

“Let’s see how long she lasts,” Camilla replied, her voice cool. “I doubt she’ll survive the week.”

Annabelle felt the heat rise to her cheeks, but she kept her head down, pretending to focus on the flowers. The soft petals brushed against her fingertips, grounding her in the moment. She knew they were right; she felt out of place, like a fragile flower in a field of sturdy weeds. But she had to push through.

As the sun rose higher in the sky, Annabelle continued her tasks, moving from the garden to the laundry room. The room was warm and filled with the smell of detergent, with clothes piled high in baskets. She started sorting through the laundry, separating darks from whites, trying to keep her mind off the judgmental looks she had received.

“Hey, you!” a voice called out, pulling her from her thoughts. It was Luca, Riccardo’s right-hand man. He leaned against the door frame, arms crossed, a slight smile playing on his lips. “You know you could be a lot faster if you actually paid attention.”

Annabelle looked up, meeting his gaze. “I’m trying,” she said, frustration bubbling in her chest. “It’s just a lot to handle.”

Luca pushed off the door and stepped closer. “Handling things is what you need to learn. You can’t be weak here, Annabelle. The Clan expects strength.”

“I know,” she replied, determination lacing her words. “I’ll do better.”

He regarded her for a moment, and Annabelle felt the weight of his scrutiny. Then, he nodded, a flicker of approval in his eyes. “Good. I’ll be watching.”

After the laundry, she returned to the main house, her feet sore and her energy waning. She was led to the dining room, where Verona was waiting. The atmosphere was tense, and the long table was set with fine china and polished silverware. The walls were adorned with dark wood paneling, giving the room a rich, opulent feel, but the weight of the Mafia’s presence hung heavy in the air.

“Look who decided to join us,” Verona said, her tone laced with sarcasm. She sat at the head of the table, her gaze piercing as she surveyed Annabelle. “I hope you’re ready to work.”

“I am,” Annabelle replied, holding her chin high despite the fluttering in her stomach.

“Good. Because we have a lot to discuss.” Verona gestured to a chair at the opposite end of the table. Annabelle sat down, the chair creaking under her weight.

As Verona spoke, her voice dripped with authority. “We expect you to contribute, Annabelle. This isn’t a vacation for you. We don’t have time for weaknesses.” The others at the table nodded, some with scowls and others with indifferent expressions. Annabelle glanced at their faces, feeling the weight of their judgment. Luca sat beside Verona, his arms crossed, watching her closely.

“Do you understand?” Verona asked, her eyes narrowing.

“Yes,” Annabelle said, her heart racing. “I’ll do whatever it takes." She whispered almost in audibly.
