Testing Her

Annabelle sat on the edge of her bed, the tension in her shoulders mounting as she braced herself for another grueling day in the Moretti Famiglia’s mansion. Every corner of this grand, intimidating house reminded her she didn’t belong here. Everything was polished, high-class, and somehow… sharp. Every time she turned a corner, she felt the watchful eyes of Riccardo’s people, judging her, measuring her against some invisible standard.

A quiet knock broke the silence, and Verona entered with her usual air of superiority. Dressed in a tailored black dress with a high collar, her dark hair pulled back, she looked every bit as poised as a statue. Annabelle had learned to brace herself around the lady; there was no warmth in her eyes, just a cold detachment.

“Riccardo wants you to assist with some tasks today,” Verona announced curtly, giving Annabelle a once-over that made her feel like she was somehow beneath even the carpet under their feet.

Annabelle nodded hesitantly, standing up. “I’ll… I’ll do my best.”

Verona’s lip twitched into a smirk. “Let’s hope that’s enough.”

Annabelle followed Verona through the maze of hallways. She had only been here a short while, but already the grand mansion felt like a labyrinth designed to make her feel lost. The maid who sometimes brought her meals had told her about the Clan’s core members, whispering their names with a mix of awe and caution. Though she hadn’t met everyone formally, Annabelle already knew who they were.

They arrived at a large open room filled with towering shelves and a polished marble floor. Around the room stood the high-ranking members of Riccardo’s Clan, each one focused, each dressed in sleek dark suits that fit like they’d been tailored right onto their frames.

Luca was the first to look up, his eyes piercing. He was Riccardo’s right-hand man, the same cold figure who had delivered Riccardo’s message to her that first day. He looked at her as if she were a mere shadow, unworthy of acknowledgment. Beside him was Dante Lombardi, who had an air of smugness about him, his gaze assessing her with barely hidden irritation. Rafael Romano leaned against a table, his dark eyes gleaming with amusement as he watched her. Sergio Rossi, standing near the window, had his arms folded, his stance rigid and disciplined.

On the opposite side of the room stood the women of the Clan. Camilla Mantova, with her dark red lipstick and slick black suit, looked at Annabelle like she was a bug in need of crushing. Next to her was Chiara Vicenza, dressed in a sharp blazer, her gaze as cold as the others. Nicoletta Lecce, the youngest of the three, was more subdued, though she watched Annabelle with a hint of curiosity.

Verona’s voice cut through the silence, “Annabelle is here to help with today’s tasks. Let’s see if she’s up to it.”

A low chuckle escaped Dante as he leaned forward, crossing his arms. “Another test? Are you sure she’s worth the time?”

Annabelle’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment, but she forced herself to hold her head high. “I’ll do whatever you need me to,” she said, trying to keep the tremor out of her voice.

Luca didn’t respond immediately; he merely lifted a hand, gesturing to a stack of papers on the table in front of him. “Start by organizing these,” he said curtly, his tone dismissive.

Annabelle stepped forward, gathering the documents, her hands trembling slightly as she worked. She could feel their gazes, each one silently criticizing her, waiting for her to make a mistake. As she sorted through the paperwork, she noticed her fingers brushing against the smooth texture of the pages, her pulse quickening with each glance she caught from the Clan members.

After a while, Sergio approached, dropping another stack of files in front of her without a word. She bit her lip, focusing on keeping her hands steady as she added them to the pile.

“Careful there,” he muttered under his breath. “We don’t have time to clean up after you.”

Annabelle clenched her jaw, swallowing her frustration. “I’ll manage.”

Her next task came from Camilla, who seemed almost pleased to hand her a task that required her to go outside to the garden and trim the flowers. “Let’s see if you can manage something as simple as trimming roses,” Camilla remarked with a cold smile.

Annabelle took the scissors, feeling the weight of the task settle on her. She wasn’t used to this world of delicate tasks and impossible expectations. But she followed Camilla’s instructions, heading outside, her footsteps echoing on the marble floors until she reached the sprawling garden. The scent of roses filled the air, but even the beauty of the scene couldn’t ease her nerves.

She knelt by the flower beds, carefully trimming the roses, feeling each snip reverberate in her hand. The warm sunlight brushed her skin, a small comfort in the midst of everything, but it was hard to savor the moment with Camilla watching her from the doorway, arms crossed, a mocking smirk on her face.

“Not too terrible,” Camilla finally said when Annabelle finished. “But don’t think this means you’re doing well. You’re simply… acceptable.”

Annabelle kept her gaze low, nodding. She wasn’t about to give them the satisfaction of seeing her frustration.

As the day went on, she moved from one task to another, each one supervised by a different member of the Clan. Rafael watched her with a smirk as she sorted through more files, occasionally commenting on her slow pace. Chiara handed her a list of errands, each one timed, as if expecting her to fail. Nicoletta gave her a silver tray of drinks, which she had to deliver to the men in the meeting room without spilling a single drop.

Annabelle felt her heart pound as she carried the tray down the hallway, careful with each step. The glasses clinked softly, the weight of the tray a constant reminder of the stakes. She entered the room where the men sat around a large table, and she felt every gaze land on her as she set the tray down.

Luca looked up briefly, his eyes narrowed. “You didn’t spill. Impressive.”

The bare hint of praise was enough to surprise her, but before she could respond, Dante scoffed, crossing his arms. “Let’s not celebrate the bare minimum.”

Annabelle clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. She held back her retort, reminding herself that speaking up would likely only make things worse.

The day dragged on, each task more grueling than the last. By the time the sun began to set, Annabelle was exhausted, her feet sore, her mind racing with frustration and helplessness. She had done everything they asked of her, but their judgmental looks hadn’t softened. She was still an outsider, still someone who didn’t belong in their world of control and precision.

As she returned to her room, she felt a sense of relief wash over her. Finally, she could be alone, away from their judging eyes. But as she closed the door, a knock interrupted her reprieve.

“Annabelle,” came Luca’s voice from the other side. She opened the door, finding him standing there with his usual impassive expression.

“Riccardo wants to see you,” he said, his tone leaving no room for hesitation.

Annabelle followed him down the hallway, her heart racing. She wasn’t sure what to expect from Riccardo. He had been distant, observing her from afar, but this was the first time he had summoned her directly.

They reached his office, and Luca opened the door, gesturing for her to step inside. Riccardo sat behind a massive wooden desk, his dark eyes fixed on her as she entered. He wore a tailored black suit, the sharp lines of his attire emphasizing the authority he commanded.

“Annabelle,” he greeted, his voice calm yet cold. “How was your first day working with the Famiglia?”

She hesitated, the weight of his gaze pressing down on her. “It was… challenging,” she admitted softly.

Riccardo’s lips twitched in a faint, unreadable smile. “Good. Challenge is how we measure strength here.”

Annabelle felt a flare of determination rise within her. She wasn’t about to let them see her as weak. She wasn’t going to crumble under their judgments.

“I’ll keep trying,” she said, meeting his gaze with as much resolve as she could muster.

Riccardo’s expression softened slightly, though his gaze remained steely. “Remember, Annabelle, in this world, weakness is unforgivable. If you want to survive here, you’ll have to prove yourself worthy of being part of the Moretti Famiglia.”

Annabelle nodded, her resolve hardening. She would endure their tests, no matter how grueling. She would prove her worth to them, one step at a time.
