Realization
Annabelle clutched her phone tightly, her knuckles pale as her mind raced, realizing she had no one to call. She was alone in Italy, her only connection here being Riccardo, the very person outside fighting for their safety. The pit in her stomach deepened as she watched the scene unfold through the car window, barely able to breathe as Riccardo moved with a deadly calmness, taking on the men one by one.
Outside, Riccardo’s movements were quick, almost ruthless, his skill and precision making each strike seem effortless. The men had clearly underestimated him, mistaking his calm exterior for weakness. They were quickly realizing their mistake, and Annabelle could see the fear beginning to show in their eyes. Despite the situation, there was a strange grace in the way Riccardo defended himself, his footwork steady, his gaze calculating, each movement smooth and controlled.
One of the men lunged forward with a knife, aiming for Riccardo’s side. Annabelle’s breath hitched as the blade came dangerously close, but with an almost practiced ease, Riccardo caught the man’s wrist and twisted, causing the weapon to clatter to the ground. Without pausing, Riccardo slammed his knee into the man’s stomach, sending him stumbling backward. Another attacker tried to grab him from behind, but Riccardo anticipated it, driving an elbow into the man’s ribs and finishing with a sharp punch to his jaw.
Inside the car, Annabelle could feel her heart pounding so loudly it nearly drowned out the sounds of the fight. She pressed her hand against her chest, trying to calm herself, but fear and adrenaline held her captive. This was her first real look at the life Riccardo lived, the threats, the violence, the constant need to watch his back. It was far more than she’d expected, and as much as she’d tried to prepare herself, being thrown into the middle of it was terrifying.
Her eyes flickered to the right, and she froze. One of the attackers, a tall man with a cruel smirk, had caught sight of her through the car window. He looked at her with a malicious gleam, and without warning, he started toward her. Annabelle’s throat tightened as she instinctively reached for the lock on the car door, but her hands were shaking so much she struggled to keep hold of it.
“Riccardo!” she cried, her voice shaking.
Riccardo’s head snapped around just in time to see the man approaching the car. Without a moment's hesitation, Riccardo intercepted him, grabbing him by the collar and shoving him back. The man stumbled, but Riccardo didn’t give him a chance to recover, delivering a fierce blow to his jaw that left him crumpled on the ground.
“Stay in the car!” Riccardo called out, his tone firm yet oddly reassuring. Annabelle nodded, though her heart still raced as she clutched the edge of her seat, watching him turn back to face the remaining men.
One of the attackers, a heavy set man with a scar across his cheek, was clearly losing his nerve. He glanced toward the others, a hint of fear flashing in his eyes as Riccardo stepped forward, his gaze icy and unyielding. Riccardo didn’t even flinch as the man swung wildly at him, his movements sluggish and desperate. With a swift duck, Riccardo dodged the punch, coming up behind the man and forcing his arm into a tight hold that had him yelping in pain.
“Tell your boss this is his only warning,” Riccardo said quietly, his voice steady and cold as steel. He tightened his grip for emphasis, the man wincing as he nodded frantically. “If he values his life, he’ll stay away from her.”
Riccardo released the man, who staggered backward, clutching his arm and looking at Riccardo with a mixture of fear and anger. He muttered something under his breath in Italian before signaling to the others. They exchanged nervous glances, then scrambled toward the black van, each throwing one last glare at Riccardo before climbing inside. The van’s engine roared to life, and in seconds, they were gone, leaving Riccardo and Annabelle alone on the now eerily quiet street.
Annabelle watched them disappear, barely able to process what had just happened. Her hands were still trembling as she opened the car door, stepping out slowly. The fresh air filled her lungs, but it did little to calm her racing heart. Riccardo turned to her, his expression softening as he took in her wide eyes and pale face.
“Are you hurt?” he asked, his voice softer now, though his gaze remained sharp, scanning her as if looking for any sign of harm.
She shook her head, barely able to find her voice. “I’m… I’m fine,” she managed, though the words felt hollow. “But you… Are you okay?”
Riccardo shrugged, brushing a hand over his jaw where a faint bruise was beginning to form. “It’s nothing I can’t handle,” he replied, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth, as if he found the situation almost amusing.
Annabelle stared at him, disbelief mingling with awe. “Who… who were they?”
His expression darkened, the warmth in his eyes replaced by a steely coldness. “People who don’t know when to let go,” he said, glancing down the street as if he could still see the van in the distance. “Old enemies who think they can take what doesn’t belong to them.”
She swallowed, her mind racing as she tried to understand. “Does this… have to do with me?”
He hesitated, a shadow of regret crossing his face. “Yes,” he admitted quietly. “When I brought you here, I knew there would be risks. But I didn’t expect them to move so quickly.” He looked away for a moment, as if struggling with something. “I wanted to keep you out of this part of my life, but… it seems I failed.”
Annabelle’s heart ached at the guilt in his voice, but she forced herself to be strong. “I knew things wouldn’t be easy with you,” she said, her voice firmer than she felt. “But… I didn’t realize it would be like this.”
Riccardo’s gaze softened, and he stepped closer, his hand resting on her shoulder. “I’ll protect you, Annabelle,” he promised, his tone carrying a weight that made her believe him. “No one will touch you as long as I’m here.”
She looked up at him, a strange mixture of gratitude and fear swirling within her. She wanted to believe him, to trust in his words, but the memory of those men, the hatred in their eyes, lingered. They wouldn’t give up so easily, and now she knew that being with Riccardo meant stepping into a world that could consume her if she wasn’t careful.
As they stood in silence, Riccardo’s phone buzzed, breaking the quiet. He glanced at the screen, his face hardening as he read the message. He looked back at her, his expression unreadable, but the slight tension in his posture spoke volumes.
“We need to go,” he said, his tone clipped, as he pocketed his phone. “It’s not safe here.”
Annabelle felt her heart drop as she nodded, the tension seeping back into her muscles. She followed him to the car, her mind racing with questions she wasn’t sure she wanted the answers to. As Riccardo started the engine and they pulled away from the curb, she couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched, that eyes were tracking their every move.
She glanced out the window, her gaze scanning the passing buildings, half expecting to see that black van following them. But the streets were empty, the only sounds coming from the hum of the engine and the steady beat of her own heart.
Riccardo’s eyes remained focused on the road, his expression unreadable as he navigated through the winding streets. Finally, he spoke, his voice low and tense. “They won’t stop until they get what they want.”
Annabelle swallowed, the weight of his words settling over her like a heavy blanket. “What… what do they want?” she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper.
Riccardo glanced at her, his gaze intense. “They want to send a message,” he said, his tone leaving little room for doubt. “To show me that nothing and no one is beyond their reach.”
Annabelle felt a chill run down her spine, a sickening realization dawning on her. She wasn’t just a bystander in this. She was part of the message, a pawn in a game she barely understood. And as they drove further into the city, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something far more dangerous than she’d ever imagined.
