Back At The Clan

As Riccardo turned the car back onto the main road, Annabelle tried to process everything that had just happened. The man who’d tried to grab her, the fight, Riccardo’s fierce defense, it was all far more intense than she’d ever expected. She’d known Riccardo’s life wasn’t ordinary, but being pulled directly into the dangers of his world left her shaken.

“Are we… going back to the Clan?” she finally asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Yes,” Riccardo replied, keeping his eyes on the road. “You’ll be safer there. Until I find out who sent those men, it’s best you stay close.”

Annabelle nodded, gripping her bag tightly. She tried to look out the window, grounding herself in the passing scenery. “But why did they come after me?” She paused, as if answering her own question. “I don’t even know anyone here.”

“It’s not about who you know,” he said, glancing at her. “It’s about me. Anyone who’s close to me becomes a target.”

She swallowed, the weight of his words sinking in. Just being around him put her at risk, and yet, despite everything, he didn’t seem willing to let her leave his side.

They continued in silence until they arrived at the Clan’s estate. The building, imposing and grand, stood surrounded by tall walls and watchful guards. Riccardo parked, stepping out to open her door before she could even reach for it. He placed a steady hand on her back as they walked inside, guiding her past the quiet stares of the staff and guards who lingered in the halls.

The silence felt heavy around them as Riccardo led her down a hallway and into a private room she hadn’t seen before. It was a large, quiet space with rich wood walls, leather seats, and a strong, comforting warmth from the fireplace. He motioned for her to sit, and Annabelle sank into one of the chairs, feeling its soft leather against her back as she tried to steady her breath.

Riccardo stayed standing, leaning against the wall, arms crossed as he watched her with a thoughtful expression. After a moment, she found the courage to break the silence. “Who were those men? The ones who tried to grab me?”

“They’re part of a rival group,” he replied, his voice low but clear. “They’ve been a problem for a while. They think they can get to me by using you.”

Annabelle looked down, trying to wrap her mind around what he was saying. “So… they targeted me just to hurt you?”

“Yes,” he said, his tone hardening. “They thought I’d be weaker if you were in danger. They’re wrong.”

She nodded, feeling a mix of fear and something else—an odd sense of trust. Despite everything, Riccardo had protected her, stood up for her, and now he was trying to keep her safe again. “Thank you,” she whispered, feeling her voice shake slightly. “I know I’m not… I don’t belong here. I don’t understand everything about your world, but… I’m grateful.”

He walked over to her, his gaze softer now. “Annabelle, you don’t have to understand everything. Just know that as long as you’re here, I’ll make sure no one lays a finger on you.”

A gentle knock interrupted their moment. One of Riccardo’s men entered, nodding before speaking. “Boss, we got information about the attackers. They’re connected to the rival Clan we suspected, but they’re acting more aggressive than before.”

Riccardo’s jaw clenched slightly. “Thank you. Keep a close eye on any movements near the estate. I want updates on everything.”

The man nodded and left, closing the door quietly behind him. Riccardo turned back to Annabelle, his face clouded with thought. “This is bigger than I thought,” he said after a moment. “Until I get to the bottom of it, you’ll stay close to the Clan.”

Annabelle nodded, relief mixed with tension settling over her. A part of her was grateful to be somewhere safe, but another part still felt the weight of uncertainty. “So… am I going to be a target as long as I’m here?” she asked, her voice softer now.

Riccardo’s gaze softened as he looked at her. “Yes, there are risks. But I’m not letting you go anywhere alone. You’re safe here with the Clan.”

The comfort in his words settled over her, though the questions didn’t stop swirling in her mind. Before she could ask another, there was a sudden, sharp knock on the door. Riccardo’s entire demeanor shifted, his gaze sharpening.

“Stay here,” he said, his tone firm as he moved to the door. With a quick nod to her, he stepped out, closing it behind him, leaving her alone in the quiet room.

Annabelle tried to calm herself, but her thoughts raced as she waited. Moments later, she heard low voices through the door, too muffled to make out any words. She strained to listen, her heart beating faster. After a few tense moments, the door opened, and Riccardo re-entered, looking more serious than before.

“What’s going on?” she asked, unable to hide the worry in her voice.

Riccardo hesitated, glancing away for a moment before meeting her gaze. “It seems there’s been movement from the rival group. They may be trying to push us further.”

Her breath hitched. “Are… are we in danger right now?”

“No,” he said firmly, stepping closer to her. “Not here. But we have to stay alert. They’re testing us.”

Annabelle nodded slowly, feeling the weight of the situation pressing down on her. Just as she began to process his words, Riccardo’s phone buzzed. He glanced down, his face tightening as he read the message.

“What is it?” she asked.

He slipped the phone back into his pocket, his expression unreadable. “It’s another problem I need to handle,” he said, his tone clipped. “For now, stay here. If anything happens, call for one of my men.”

Annabelle felt a pang of unease as he turned toward the door again. “Riccardo… please be careful.”

He paused, looking back at her, a faint hint of warmth in his eyes. “Don’t worry. I’ll be back soon.”

And then he was gone, leaving Annabelle alone in the room, her mind buzzing with everything she’d just learned. As the minutes ticked by, she couldn’t help but replay his words in her head. She was safe, he’d said. But it was hard to believe that fully with everything that was happening.

A knock at the door broke her thoughts, and she looked up, half-expecting Riccardo to return. But instead, it was one of the staff, a young woman she hadn’t seen before, carrying a tray with tea and snacks.

“I brought this for you,” the woman said, setting the tray on the table nearby. “I know it’s been a stressful day.”

Annabelle managed a small smile. “Thank you. I appreciate it.”

The woman nodded and slipped out quietly, leaving Annabelle alone once more. She sipped the tea, trying to focus on its warmth rather than the unease creeping through her. The minutes passed slowly, the silence in the room growing heavier with each one.
