Danger!
Riccardo’s expression shifted instantly, his eyes narrowing as he leaned closer, trying to see her phone screen. “What does it say?” he asked, his voice steady but edged with urgency.
Annabelle’s hands trembled as she held the phone out for him to see. “It’s a message from an unknown number. They said, ‘You can’t hide behind him forever, Annabelle. This isn’t over.’”
His jaw tightened, and he took the phone from her, reading the message again. “This isn’t good,” he muttered, his brow furrowing.
“What do we do?” she asked, her heart racing again. The fear that had started to fade was rushing back.
Riccardo didn’t answer right away. Instead, he stood up, scanning their surroundings as if expecting someone to jump out at them. “We need to get somewhere safe. Now.”
Annabelle nodded, standing up quickly. She felt a surge of adrenaline push through her, mixing with the lingering shock from the earlier confrontation. Riccardo’s protective demeanor gave her a sense of security, but the unknown threat loomed large in her mind.
“Where are we going?” she asked as he led her away from the bench.
“To my car. We’ll head to a safer place,” he replied, his voice calm but firm.
As they hurried across the campus, Annabelle glanced over her shoulder, half expecting to see the man from earlier lurking in the shadows. The campus, usually bustling with students, felt eerily quiet. The weight of the unknown pressed down on her.
When they reached Riccardo’s sleek black car, he quickly opened the door for her. “Get in,” he urged, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Annabelle climbed into the passenger seat, her heart pounding. Riccardo slid in beside her, starting the engine with a low growl. “We’ll drive around for a bit until I’m sure it’s safe.”
As they pulled out of the parking lot, Annabelle felt a mix of gratitude and fear. Riccardo’s presence was comforting, but the threat of the unknown loomed large in her mind. “What if they try to find me again?” she asked, her voice trembling.
“They won’t,” Riccardo replied, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. “I won’t let them.”
She nodded but couldn’t shake the feeling of vulnerability. “What did I get myself into? This is all so… overwhelming.”
Riccardo’s expression softened slightly as he glanced at her. “You didn’t do anything wrong, Annabelle. You’re just caught in a situation that’s bigger than you realize.”
“What do you mean?” she asked, curiosity creeping into her voice.
He hesitated, choosing his words carefully. “Let’s just say my past has a way of creeping back in. And when it does, it affects everyone around me.”
“Your past?” Annabelle asked, feeling a mixture of concern and intrigue. “What do you mean by that?”
Riccardo sighed, his grip on the steering wheel tightening. “There are people who want to hurt me. People I’ve crossed paths with who won’t let things go. It’s why I want you to stay close to me.”
Annabelle felt a chill run down her spine. “So, they’re after you, and I’m just... caught in the middle?”
He shot her a sharp look. “I’m trying to protect you. You don’t need to worry about any of this. Just know that I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe.”
The tension in the car was thick as they drove through the streets of the city. Annabelle watched the scenery fly by, her mind racing. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she was part of a dangerous game, one that had started the moment she arrived in Italy.
As they passed a small café, Riccardo suddenly slowed down. “Let’s grab some coffee and figure out our next move,” he said, parking the car.
Annabelle felt a pang of hunger mixed with anxiety. “Okay,” she agreed, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that danger was lurking just around the corner.
They stepped into the café, the warm air enveloping them as the smell of freshly brewed coffee filled her senses. Riccardo approached the counter to order, leaving Annabelle to gather her thoughts.
Sitting at a small table, she pulled out her phone again, checking for any new messages. Nothing. The silence was unsettling, amplifying her fears. She glanced around the café, noticing a few patrons chatting quietly. No one seemed to be watching them, but the sense of paranoia lingered.
Riccardo returned with two steaming cups, setting one in front of her. “Here you go,” he said, his voice a bit softer. “Drink up. It’ll help calm your nerves.”
“Thanks,” she murmured, wrapping her hands around the warm cup. The heat seeped into her skin, but it did little to ease her worry.
“Talk to me, Annabelle,” Riccardo urged, leaning closer. “What’s on your mind?”
“I just can’t believe this is happening,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “One moment, I’m starting college, and now I’m caught up in... whatever this is.”
His eyes softened as he watched her. “It’s a lot to take in. But you’re strong. You handled yourself well earlier.”
“Did I?” she asked, feeling the weight of his words. “I was terrified.”
“And that’s okay,” he reassured her. “Fear is natural in situations like this. It means you care about your safety.”
She nodded, taking a sip of her coffee. The warmth spread through her, grounding her in the moment. “I guess I just wish things were different.”
“Me too,” he said, his voice quiet. “But we’ll figure it out together.”
Just then, Annabelle’s phone buzzed again, cutting through the moment. She looked down, her heart sinking as she saw another message from the unknown number.
“You can run, but you can’t hide. I’ll find you, Annabelle.”
“Riccardo,” she breathed, her voice shaky as she showed him the screen.
His expression hardened, and he leaned back in his chair, his gaze steady. “This isn’t good. They’re not backing down.”
“What do we do?” she asked, panic rising in her chest.
“We need to move,” Riccardo said decisively, standing up. He quickly paid for the coffee, his demeanor shifting to one of urgency. “Stay close to me, and don’t let anyone out of your sight.”
Annabelle nodded, feeling the fear grip her again as they exited the café. The city outside felt more ominous, the shadows longer as the day began to fade. She sensed that time was running out.
As they walked back to the car, Riccardo’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, glancing at the screen, and his expression changed.
“What is it?” Annabelle asked, her heart racing.
“Just a message from one of my contacts,” he replied, his voice tense. “We need to get to a safe house. They’ve located us.”
“Who has?” she pressed, her anxiety climbing.
“The people who are after me,” he said, his tone serious. “And now, you.”
Before she could respond, Riccardo’s expression shifted as he spotted something across the street. “Get in the car. Now.”
Annabelle didn’t hesitate, scrambling into the passenger seat as Riccardo jumped in beside her. He slammed the door shut, his eyes scanning the area.
“What did you see?” she asked, her voice shaking.
“Just a couple of guys watching us,” he said, starting the engine. “But I’m not taking any chances.”
As they sped away from the café, Annabelle felt the weight of the world on her shoulders. She glanced back, half expecting to see someone following them, but all she saw was the city fading into the distance.
Riccardo turned onto a quieter street, his jaw set tight. “We’ll get through this, Annabelle. I promise.”
But as they rounded a corner, a black van suddenly pulled out in front of them, blocking the road. Riccardo’s eyes widened as he slammed on the brakes, the car skidding to a stop.
“Stay down!” he yelled, and Annabelle ducked instinctively.
Before she could process what was happening, the van’s side door slid open, and several figures emerged, their intentions clear. The tension in the air was electric, and Annabelle’s heart dropped.
“Riccardo!” she shouted, panic coursing through her.
He turned to her, his eyes fierce. “Stay in the car. No matter what happens.”
The van’s occupants advanced, and Riccardo threw open his door, stepping out to confront them. Annabelle watched, fear twisting in her stomach as she felt helpless, trapped inside the car.
“Get back!” Riccardo shouted, standing his ground. “This isn’t your fight!”
But the men didn’t listen. They closed in, and she could see the weapons glinting in the fading light. A surge of adrenaline pushed her to act.
“Riccardo!” she cried out, her voice shaking.
But before she could make a move, one of the men lunged at him, and the fight erupted in chaos. Annabelle’s heart raced as she realized the danger they were in.
“Stay back!” Riccardo shouted, his movements quick as he defended himself, but the odds were against him.
