Chapter 68 Chapter 68
"The big day had finally arrived.
Everything was ready — the decorated venue, the adjusted lights, the flowers along the aisle releasing a soft scent that reached all the way up to the second floor. The house was in full motion, but I… I was there, isolated in that room.
Isa had forbidden Dominic from seeing me.
She said it brought bad luck.
And honestly? She practically shoved me out of the hallway when he tried to glance in my direction earlier.
The makeup artist was giving the final touches to my face, a delicate silence hanging in the air. I felt the soft brush glide over my skin, so gentle it almost tickled. She adjusted a strand of hair stubbornly falling onto my forehead, then stepped back, studying the result as if she were analyzing a piece of art.
"All done," she said with a satisfied smile. "You can open your eyes."
I took a deep breath and opened them.
The reflection in the mirror nearly knocked the air out of me.
My skin glowed softly, naturally; my eyes were more defined, with a shine I couldn’t tell was highlighter or pure anxiety; my lips carried a rosy tone that made my whole face look more alive. Even my neck looked longer, more elegant.
My fingers trembled on my lap.
"So? What do you think?" I asked, turning my head toward Isa. My voice came out low, almost a whisper, as if I were afraid of breaking the spell.
Isa’s eyes widened, her mouth opening in a smile so big I could see all the emotion building inside her.
"You look… you look incredible," she said, placing a hand over her chest like she was about to faint. "Beautiful. Beautiful in a way that physically hurts to look at! Dominic is going to freak out!"
I laughed, but my cheeks burned.
"Thank you, Isa…"
She walked over to me, fixed the hem of my dress with delicate movements, and held my face for a few seconds, like she wanted to memorize every detail.
"Now I need to go," she said, taking a deep breath to keep herself from crying. "The wedding is about to start. Don’t take too long, okay?"
When Isa left the room, the sound of the door closing felt like it swallowed all the noise at once. The room grew silent, muffled, and the distant echoes of people organizing things downstairs became almost irrelevant.
I remained sitting in the armchair, my hands resting on the white fabric of the dress. The bouquet lay beside me, and when I picked it up, I felt the coolness of the petals against my fingers. It was heavy. Heavier than I expected. I brought it closer to my face, inhaling the soft scent of the white flowers.
My heart was beating way too fast.
So fast I could feel the pulse at my fingertips.
"Today’s the day…" I murmured to myself.
My legs swung nervously, my feet brushing against each other beneath the hem of the dress. The room felt too small for the amount of emotions inside me — joy, fear, anticipation, love, and a tiny bit of terror I couldn’t quite explain.
And amidst all of that, a strange certainty began to settle in my chest.
This would be the most important day of my life."
