Chapter 393
Chapter 393
Raymond raised an eyebrow, "You want me to swear?"
Emily nodded, "Yeah, if you don't swear, I won't believe you. What? Are you scared? If you can't even swear, how am I supposed to trust you?"
She thought Raymond would care too much about his pride to swear, as he wasn't the type to sweet-talk women easily. Plus, Emily didn't think Raymond had the patience to coax her.
Just when she had given up hope, Raymond surprised her by actually apologizing, "I'm sorry. I swear I'm telling the truth. I swear I have no feelings for Brynn."
Hearing this, Emily's eyes widened in surprise, disbelief written all over her face. "You... really swore..."
Raymond smiled slightly, "Yeah, didn't you ask me to? How could I not listen to my wife?"
For some reason, Emily felt like she had been unreasonable all along, and even a bit embarrassed. She had always prided herself on being a master in relationships, outsmarting many men. She was the one who usually left men feeling humiliated, but now, she felt like Raymond had turned the tables on her.
She lowered her head slightly, unable to meet Raymond's eyes, but he lifted her chin, forcing her to look at him. "So, do you believe me now?"
Faced with this question, Emily's gaze faltered. She bit her lip, "You swore, so how can I not believe you?"
Raymond chuckled and gently hugged her, "The reason I took her home last night was because she lives so far away. Plus, the culprit from that old case is still at large, so I feel more at ease handling things myself. My colleagues who are still on the force are still investigating that cold case. If we catch the culprit, I'll tell you everything from start to finish. But for now, Emily, everything is a secret. That's all I can tell you about Brynn. I'm really sorry."
Hearing this explanation, Emily's eyes began to dart around, a blush creeping up her cheeks. She smiled slightly, trying to hide her embarrassment. She blushed and lowered her head, softly saying, "Alright, I believe you."
Raymond then gave her a punishing kiss on the lips, biting just hard enough to make a point but not to hurt her. "Good. Trust me from now on. Do you think I'm the kind of guy who falls for women easily?"
Emily answered sincerely, "No. Just look at your history with Abigail. Even after everything, you stayed true to her. That shows how dedicated you are."
Though it sounded like praise, it was also a subtle jab. Annoyed, Raymond pinched her waist, making Emily almost yelp. She glared at him, "You jerk."
"I was planning to deal with you properly last night, but it looks like now's the perfect time to make up for it." Raymond's eyes turned dangerous, like a predator eyeing its prey.
Emily's heart raced, and she blushed even more. She quickly said, "You rogue, don't forget I'm still injured. Don't you know too much stress isn't good for the brain?"
Raymond's teasing gaze was like a warm breeze, making her feel like she was basking in spring sunshine. "Alright, I'll let you off for now."
Emily's eyes sparkled with an idea, and she smirked, "But you know, even if you don't like Brynn, you've made her misunderstand something."
Raymond raised an eyebrow, puzzled, "What do you mean?"
"I mean, not only did you make me overthink, but you also made Brynn overthink. She completely believes you treat her differently because you like her. She probably imagines herself as the heroine in a romance novel, being pursued by a rich man," Emily teased.
Emily didn't think Raymond would lie about this. She had spent enough time with him to understand his character.
Raymond frowned, "How did you figure that out?"
Emily shrugged, smirking, "I didn't. Brynn told me herself. She went on and on about how special your treatment of her was, making it clear she thinks you have a special interest in her."
"Ridiculous. There's a reason for the special treatment, but it's not that exaggerated. Most of the time, Juan handles her. I just give orders. I seriously doubt she didn't embellish her story," Raymond said, expressionless.
Emily raised an eyebrow, "I think so too."
"I can't believe my concern for the case made her think this way. And she told you herself? That means she likes me," Raymond frowned, his impression of Brynn changing.
Emily didn't say it outright, but she hinted, "So, what do you think about this? A fresh-out-of-college girl misunderstanding a rich man's intentions. She's probably over the moon right now."
Raymond frowned, displeased, "If I had known Brynn thought this way, I wouldn't have kept her around. Don't you think this is a disaster waiting to happen?"
A disaster...
That was a good way to put it. Brynn, a naive college graduate, could easily do something extreme if she kept pursuing Raymond without success. There were plenty of stories about college students taking drastic measures over unrequited love.
"Too bad Brynn came to me with this. She really thinks you like her and is trying to provoke me. But I don't get why she'd do that. Isn't she afraid I'd kill her?" Emily wondered.
Raymond thought for a moment, then said, "I think Brynn must have heard rumors about us. A fresh graduate hasn't faced the harsh realities of society yet. Her thoughts are too simple."
