Chapter 392
Chapter 392
"Emily, you never used to judge people by their looks," Raymond said calmly.
Emily smirked. "What? Afraid my words might sting?"
Raymond chuckled. "Emily, you sound really jealous."
"Cut the crap. This isn't jealousy; it's my job as your wife. I need to know who you're sneaking around with. If she's prettier than me, fine, but honestly, your taste is awful," Emily muttered defensively.
Raymond wasn't angry; he just kept looking at her. "Just admit it, are you jealous?"
Emily huffed. "So what if I am?"
Raymond smiled. "I appreciate your honesty. That's one of the things I love about you."
Emily rolled her eyes. "You're impossible."
Raymond grinned. "Who started this, anyway?"
Emily sighed. "I don't want to waste my breath on you. If you have a new flame, just say it. I hate being kept in the dark."
Her meaning was clear: if Raymond wanted to leave her, he should just say so.
Raymond raised an eyebrow, a faint smile playing on his lips. "You think I like Brynn?"
"Answer me."
Raymond didn't respond immediately. Instead, he reached out and pinched Emily's cheek again, clearly enjoying the soft, squishy feel of it.
Emily swatted his hand away, glaring at him. "Isn't it obvious? Your concern for Brynn goes way beyond what a boss should have for an employee. I'm not imagining things."
Raymond hesitated for a moment, then laughed lightly. "You know, your jealousy actually makes me happy. But you've got it all wrong. My special treatment of Brynn has nothing to do with romance. Do you remember what I used to do?"
Emily looked puzzled. "You... you used to be a cop, right?"
"Exactly. Brynn is connected to a case I worked on back then. She was involved, but she was just a kid, not even in high school yet. I won't go into details, but I've been supporting her education ever since," Raymond explained simply.
Emily's eyes widened, as if she'd heard a joke. She looked at him skeptically. "You expect me to believe that?"
"What else? Do you think I'm making it up?"
Emily nodded earnestly. "Yeah, it sounds like an excuse."
Raymond's expression shifted slightly before he regained his composure, a meaningful smile on his lips. "If that's what you think, I can understand. So, I forgive you."
"You forgive me? I haven't even forgiven you yet. What gives you the right to forgive me?"
"Does it really matter to you?" Raymond asked, his tone casual.
Emily frowned, caught off guard by the sudden question. They hadn't been talking about this, and now Raymond was steering the conversation back to jealousy.
Emily wasn't sure if she was jealous. She didn't fully understand her feelings for Raymond, but one thing was clear: she had feelings for him. However, her rationality and self-discipline kept her emotions in check. She wouldn't allow herself to show love for Raymond.
Because she saw herself as a bad woman, and bad women don't show their feelings. Even if they have feelings, they don't reveal them.
So she forced herself to say, "I don't care. It's just possessiveness."
"Are you sure it's just possessiveness?" Raymond stepped closer.
Emily kept her head slightly lowered, avoiding his gaze. She believed her heart wasn't strong enough; if it were, she wouldn't have fallen for Raymond.
She needed to suppress her feelings. If she lost control, she'd be in deep trouble.
She didn't believe she and Raymond could last.
With these thoughts, Emily's heart grew cold. She met Raymond's eyes fearlessly. "Do you really not understand our relationship? If you cared about me, you wouldn't have offered to take another woman home right in front of me, would you?"
Raymond looked at her, then sighed softly. "If you're upset about that, I apologize."
"Just an apology?" Emily pressed.
Raymond was puzzled. "What else?"
Emily demanded, "Explain your relationship with Brynn. Or do you not trust me enough to tell me?"
Raymond sat down, tapping his fingers rhythmically on the armrest, deep in thought. Emily stayed silent, giving him time to think.
The silence between them was thick, neither speaking for a while.
Finally, Raymond broke the silence. "There's nothing between Brynn and me. I used to be a cop, and Brynn is the daughter of a victim from a high-profile case. She was just a kid back then, and I've been supporting her education ever since. She doesn't know this, and I hired her at the Carter Group to honor her father's memory. That's all. My grandmother knows about this, too. If you don't believe me, you can ask her. She wouldn't lie to you."
The air was heavy with tension. Emily's expression was complicated, but she eventually calmed down.
"Swear it," she said.
Raymond sighed, a hint of a smile on his lips. "You want me to swear?"
"Yes, swear it. If you don't, I won't believe you, and I won't ask Grandma. I don't want to seem petty."
