Chapter 73
Chapter 73
For a moment, no one moved.
It was like the room had been drained of oxygen.
Three phones.
Three screens.
One violation.
And the silence that followed was not confusion.
It was impact.
Adele was still staring at her phone, but she wasn’t really seeing it anymore. The images had already burned into her mind. The hospital bed. The weakness. The moments she thought belonged only to her pain… now turned into something else.
Something stolen.
Something used.
Julian stepped closer again, slower this time.
“Adele…”
She didn’t look at him.
“Who else has this?” she asked quietly.
Katherine didn’t answer immediately.
That was the answer.
Liam’s voice cut through, sharp. “How many people, Katherine?”
She exhaled, almost bored. “Enough.”
Isabel shook her head, backing away slightly. “No… no, you wouldn’t—”
Katherine’s gaze snapped to her. “Don’t pretend you didn’t know what I was capable of.”
“I didn’t know this,” Isabel whispered.
“That’s because you only saw what you wanted to see,” Katherine replied coldly.
Adele finally looked up.
Not at Katherine.
At Liam.
“Is it out?” she asked.
Liam checked his phone again, fingers moving fast, scanning. His expression darkened with every second.
“…Not fully,” he said. “But it’s moving. Private threads. Closed circles. It won’t stay contained.”
Julian muttered under his breath. “We shut it down.”
Katherine let out a soft laugh. “You can try.”
That did it.
Julian turned on her, all restraint gone. “You invaded her privacy. You distributed it. Do you have any idea what you’ve just done?”
Katherine didn’t flinch.
“Yes,” she said simply.
“And you think you walk away from this?” Liam added, voice low with anger.
Katherine tilted her head. “I never said I was walking away.”
A beat.
Then—
“I said I don’t lose.”
Adele stood up.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Everyone felt it.
That shift.
It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t explosive.
It was worse.
It was quiet.
“You’re right,” Adele said.
Katherine’s brows lifted slightly.
Adele stepped forward.
“You don’t lose,” she continued. “You destroy.”
Katherine smiled faintly. “That’s one way to look at it.”
Adele stopped right in front of her.
“But here’s the part you didn’t think through,” Adele added.
Katherine’s smile didn’t fade, but something in her eyes sharpened.
Adele held her gaze.
“You didn’t just expose me,” she said softly. “You exposed yourself.”
That landed.
Not loudly.
But deeply.
Julian’s eyes flicked to Adele.
Liam stilled.
Isabel looked confused.
Katherine’s smile tightened just slightly. “Explain.”
Adele didn’t rush.
“You said I don’t have proof,” she said. “That it’s just emotion.”
Katherine’s jaw shifted.
Adele continued.
“But now?” she gestured lightly to the phones. “Now I have motive. Escalation. Pattern.”
Liam’s expression changed instantly.
Julian caught on next.
Katherine didn’t move.
“You just confirmed everything,” Adele finished.
Silence.
Heavy.
Then Liam spoke, almost to himself. “Harassment. Coercion. Intentional emotional distress… and now distribution.”
Julian added quietly, “Digital trail.”
Isabel looked between them. “Wait… what are you saying?”
Adele didn’t take her eyes off Katherine.
“I’m saying,” she replied, “she just made this real.”
Katherine’s expression didn’t break.
But something behind it shifted.
Fast.
Dangerous.
“You think this is a courtroom?” she asked softly.
“No,” Adele said. “I think this is the beginning of one.”
That did it.
For the first time—
Katherine looked… cornered.
Not defeated.
But aware.
And that awareness made her more dangerous, not less.
“You’re making a mistake,” she said quietly.
Adele shook her head.
“No,” she replied. “This time, I’m making a decision.”
A pause.
Then—
Katherine moved.
Fast.
She grabbed her glass from the counter and hurled it across the room.
It shattered violently against the wall.
Isabel screamed.
Julian stepped forward instinctively.
Liam tensed.
But Adele didn’t flinch.
Not even a little.
The sound faded.
Silence rushed back in.
Katherine stood there, breathing uneven now. The control was slipping, piece by piece, and she knew it.
“You think you can take me down?” she said, her voice no longer smooth. “Do you have any idea who you’re dealing with?”
Adele’s answer was immediate.
“Yes.”
And that…
That hit harder than fear ever could.
Because there was none.
None at all.
Outside, sirens wailed faintly in the distance.
Not close enough to matter.
But close enough to remind them—
This wasn’t contained anymore.
Inside, the tension had shifted completely.
Katherine wasn’t in control.
Not fully.
Not anymore.
Liam stepped closer to Adele, lowering his voice. “We need to move fast. If this spreads—”
“It will,” she said.
Julian nodded. “Then we get ahead of it.”
Isabel looked panicked. “What does that even mean?”
Adele turned to her.
It was the first time she really looked at Isabel since everything exploded.
“You help,” Adele said.
Isabel froze. “What?”
“You tell everything,” Adele continued. “Publicly. Clearly. No gaps. No half truths.”
Katherine let out a sharp laugh. “That’s your strategy? Honesty?”
Adele didn’t look at her. “It’s more than you’ve ever tried.”
Isabel’s hands trembled. “If I do that… it destroys everything.”
Adele’s voice softened, just slightly. “It already is.”
That hit Isabel hard.
Tears filled her eyes.
Liam added, firm but not unkind, “It’s the only way you have a chance at fixing even a part of this.”
Julian didn’t speak.
But his silence agreed.
Isabel looked at Katherine.
Then at Adele.
Then down at her hands.
“I…” she started, voice breaking. “I don’t know if I’m strong enough.”
Adele’s response was quiet.
“You weren’t before,” she said. “Be now.”
Silence.
Then—
A knock.
Everyone froze.
Slow.
Measured.
Not rushed.
Not uncertain.
Three times.
Julian’s eyes narrowed. “No one else was supposed to be here.”
Liam moved slightly in front of Adele.
Katherine didn’t move.
But something flickered in her eyes.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“Of course,” she murmured.
Julian looked at her. “What does that mean?”
She didn’t answer.
The knock came again.
Sharper this time.
Adele’s heart started pounding.
“Don’t open it,” Isabel whispered.
Too late.
The handle turned.
The door opened.
And Selene stepped in.
But she wasn’t alone.
Two men followed behind her.
Calm.
Professional.
Focused.
One of them spoke first.
“Katherine Hale?”
Silence dropped like a blade.
Katherine didn’t respond.
The man stepped forward slightly. “We need you to come with us.”
Julian’s eyes flicked between them. “Who are you?”
The second man answered.
“Legal enforcement,” he said. “We’ve received a formal complaint along with supporting digital evidence.”
Liam blinked. “Already?”
Selene stepped forward, eyes locking with Adele’s.
“I told you,” she said softly. “Be ready.”
Adele stared at her. “You—”
Selene nodded once. “The moment those files moved, I acted.”
Katherine finally spoke.
“You move fast,” she said.
Selene’s expression didn’t change. “You made it easy.”
A pause.
Then—
Katherine laughed.
Not broken.
Not weak.
Something else.
Almost impressed.
“Interesting,” she said.
The man stepped forward again. “Ma’am.”
Katherine raised a hand slightly.
“Give me a second.”
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
Katherine turned.
Looked at Adele.
Really looked at her.
For the first time without layers.
Without performance.
“You did this,” she said quietly.
Adele held her gaze.
“No,” she replied. “You did.”
A long pause.
Then Katherine smiled.
Small.
Real.
Terrifying.
“This isn’t over,” she said.
Adele didn’t respond.
Because she knew.
That was the truth.
Katherine turned back to the men.
“Fine,” she said. “Let’s go.”
They moved toward the door.
Selene stepped aside.
But as Katherine passed Adele—
She leaned in slightly.
Just enough for only her to hear.
“You think exposure sets you free,” she whispered. “It doesn’t.”
Adele didn’t react.
Katherine straightened.
And walked out.
Just like that.
Gone.
The door closed.
Silence.
But not the same silence as before.
This one was different.
Because now—
The storm hadn’t ended.
It had just… changed direction.
Isabel sank into a chair, shaking.
Liam ran a hand through his hair. “This just went public.”
Julian looked at Adele. “Are you okay?”
Adele exhaled slowly.
Long.
Deep.
Then she said something none of them expected.
“I’m not done.”
Selene’s eyes sharpened. “What do you mean?”
Adele looked at all of them.
Steady.
Certain.
“I mean this isn’t just about surviving anymore,” she said.
A beat.
Then—
“It’s about finishing it.”
And something in her tone made it clear.
This story?
Was far from over.
