Chapter 72

Chapter 72

The air shifted before anyone moved.

You could feel it.

That thin line between control and chaos snapped quietly, almost politely, like something fragile breaking in a room no one wanted to disturb.

Katherine smiled.

And this time, it wasn’t the controlled version.

It was sharp.

Dangerous.

“You’ve gotten bold,” she said, her voice low. “I’ll give you that.”

Adele didn’t respond.

She just stood there, steady, her hands relaxed at her sides, her eyes locked on Katherine like she was done looking away.

Isabel watched the two of them, her chest rising too fast, her fingers digging into her knees. She could feel it spiraling. This wasn’t conversation anymore.

This was something else.

“You think this ends because you say it does?” Katherine continued.

“No,” Adele said quietly. “I think it ends because I stop playing.”

Katherine tilted her head. “You were never playing. You were reacting.”

“That’s not true anymore.”

That landed.

A small shift.

Katherine took a step forward.

“Then tell me,” she said, almost curious now. “What exactly do you think you’re going to do?”

Adele didn’t hesitate.

“I’m going to tell everything,” she said. “Every detail. Every pattern. Every moment that didn’t make sense until now.”

Katherine let out a quiet breath, almost amused. “And you think that destroys me?”

“I don’t care if it destroys you,” Adele replied. “I care that it frees me.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Isabel’s throat tightened.

This was not how she imagined this ending.

Katherine’s fingers tapped lightly against her arm.

Once.

Twice.

Then she stopped.

“You’re forgetting something,” Katherine said.

Adele didn’t move. “What?”

Katherine smiled again.

“Proof.”

That word hit the room differently.

Adele’s expression didn’t change, but something flickered behind her eyes.

Katherine saw it.

And pushed.

“You can say anything you want,” she continued. “But without proof, it’s just emotion. And emotion is easy to dismiss.”

Isabel’s head snapped toward Katherine.

“Don’t,” she whispered.

Katherine ignored her.

“You think people will believe you over me?” she added softly. “Think carefully before you answer that.”

Adele exhaled slowly.

“You’re right,” she said.

That wasn’t what Katherine expected.

“Am I?” Katherine asked.

Adele nodded once. “I don’t have proof.”

Katherine leaned back slightly, satisfaction flickering.

“And yet,” Adele continued, her voice steady, “you’re still here trying to control the outcome.”

That wiped the satisfaction away.

A pause.

Then Adele stepped closer.

“If you were truly safe,” she said quietly, “you wouldn’t be talking this much.”

Isabel’s breath caught.

Katherine’s jaw tightened.

Another crack.

Small.

But there.

Before Katherine could respond—

The door opened.

This time, no hesitation.

No warning.

Julian walked in first.

Liam right behind him.

Everything stopped.

Isabel’s eyes widened. “Oh my God…”

Katherine didn’t turn immediately.

She already knew.

Of course she did.

Slowly, she faced them.

“Well,” she said softly. “This just became crowded.”

Julian’s gaze went straight to Adele.

“Are you okay?”

Adele nodded once. “I’m fine.”

Liam didn’t speak.

He was watching Katherine.

Carefully.

Like he was done underestimating her.

Katherine folded her arms. “You brought an audience.”

“I brought witnesses,” Adele said.

That word landed.

Witnesses.

Katherine’s smile thinned. “You really think this helps you?”

Julian stepped forward now, his presence calm but heavy. “It helps the truth.”

Katherine looked at him.

Something unreadable passed through her eyes.

“You’re still choosing her,” she said quietly.

Julian didn’t hesitate. “Yes.”

That hit harder than anything else so far.

Isabel looked away.

Katherine laughed softly, but it cracked halfway through. “Of course you are.”

Liam finally spoke. “This ends tonight.”

Katherine turned to him. “You’ve said that before.”

“Not like this,” he replied.

Silence again.

But this one was different.

Thicker.

Because now…

Everyone was here.

Adele.

Katherine.

Isabel.

Julian.

Liam.

No more distance.

No more secondhand truths.

Just everything, all at once.

Isabel stood up suddenly.

“I need to say something,” she said, her voice shaking.

Katherine’s head snapped toward her. “Sit down.”

“No,” Isabel said, louder this time. “You don’t get to control me anymore.”

That surprised everyone.

Even herself.

Katherine stared at her.

Cold.

Dangerous.

“You think this is the moment you grow a spine?” she asked quietly.

Isabel swallowed hard.

“Yes.”

A beat.

Then she turned to Adele.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “Not the kind of sorry that fixes anything. I just… I need you to know I knew what I was doing. I just didn’t think it would go this far.”

Adele watched her.

Silent.

Processing.

Isabel’s voice broke. “I thought I could control it. I thought I could control how much it affected you.”

Adele spoke then.

Soft.

“But you didn’t.”

Isabel shook her head. “No.”

Liam looked away briefly.

Julian’s expression hardened.

Katherine just watched.

And then—

She laughed.

Not soft.

Not controlled.

Sharp.

Unstable.

“That’s what you’re all clinging to?” she said. “Guilt? Confession? Emotion?”

Her eyes moved between them.

“You think that changes anything?”

Adele didn’t respond.

Julian didn’t respond.

Liam didn’t respond.

And that…

That unsettled Katherine more than anything else so far.

Because for the first time—

They weren’t reacting to her.

They were just… standing.

Grounded.

And she could feel it slipping.

“You’re all making a mistake,” she said, quieter now.

Liam stepped forward.

“No,” he said. “You did.”

Katherine’s eyes flicked to him.

Then to Julian.

Then to Adele.

Something shifted.

Fast.

Decisive.

Her phone buzzed again.

This time—

She answered.

Everyone froze.

“Hello?” she said calmly.

A pause.

Then—

“Yes,” she added. “Do it.”

The call ended.

Silence.

Heavy.

Wrong.

Julian’s voice dropped. “What did you just do?”

Katherine looked at him.

And smiled.

This time—

Cold.

Final.

“I told you,” she said softly. “I don’t lose.”

Adele’s stomach dropped.

Liam’s jaw tightened.

Isabel went pale.

Julian stepped forward. “Katherine—”

But it was too late.

Because at that exact moment—

Liam’s phone buzzed.

Then Julian’s.

Then Adele’s.

All at once.

Three phones.

Same message.

Same unknown number.

Liam opened his first.

His expression changed instantly.

Julian checked his.

“Where did they get this—”

Adele looked at hers.

And her breath stopped.

Photos.

Private.

Personal.

Moments she didn’t even remember being watched.

Hospital.

Home.

Weak.

Unaware.

Exposed.

Her hands started shaking.

“No…” she whispered.

Isabel covered her mouth.

“Oh my God…”

Julian’s voice turned sharp. “Katherine, what the hell did you do?”

Katherine didn’t look at him.

She was watching Adele.

Only Adele.

“You wanted truth,” she said quietly.

Adele’s chest tightened.

“You wanted everything exposed,” Katherine continued.

Her voice dropped.

“So I exposed it.”

Liam stepped forward, furious. “You crossed every line—”

“There are no lines,” Katherine snapped.

Silence crashed over the room.

Adele’s breathing turned uneven.

Her hands trembled as she stared at the screen.

Every vulnerable moment.

Every private second.

Turned into something else.

Something ugly.

Something public.

Tears filled her eyes.

But she didn’t cry.

Not yet.

Julian moved toward her immediately. “Adele—”

“Don’t,” she said.

Her voice was quiet.

But it stopped him.

She looked up slowly.

At Katherine.

Really looked at her.

And for the first time—

There was no fear there.

Just something colder.

“You didn’t win,” Adele said.

Katherine smiled faintly. “Didn’t I?”

Adele shook her head.

“No,” she said. “You just made sure I have nothing left to be afraid of.”

That…

That made Katherine pause.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Because now—

Everything had changed again.

And this time…

Even Katherine couldn’t predict what came next.
