Chapter 74
Chapter 74
By morning, it was everywhere.
Not loud at first.
Not trending.
Just… circulating.
Quiet shares. Closed groups. Private conversations that weren’t as private as people liked to believe. Screenshots passed like secrets. Voices lowered over phones. Names mentioned carefully.
But it didn’t stay quiet.
It never does.
Adele sat on the edge of her bed, her phone face down beside her. She hadn’t opened it again since last night.
She didn’t need to.
She already knew.
The world had seen her at her weakest.
And there was no taking that back.
A soft knock came at the door.
“Come in,” she said.
Julian stepped inside, slower than usual, like he wasn’t sure how much space she needed.
“How bad?” she asked without looking up.
He didn’t lie.
“It’s spreading,” he said. “But not uncontrollably. Not yet.”
Adele nodded once.
“That means it will,” she replied.
Julian watched her carefully. “We can still contain parts of it. Liam is working on takedowns. Selene’s handling the legal side.”
Adele let out a quiet breath. “Containment feels like denial.”
Julian didn’t argue.
Because she was right.
Silence settled between them.
Then—
“I meant what I said,” Adele added.
Julian frowned slightly. “About what?”
“Finishing it.”
That made him step closer.
“Adele…”
She finally looked at him.
Her eyes were tired.
But clear.
“I’m not hiding,” she said. “Not from this.”
Julian’s jaw tightened. “You don’t owe anyone that kind of exposure.”
“It’s not about them,” she replied. “It’s about me taking control of how this story is told.”
A pause.
Then—
“I’m going public,” she said.
That landed.
Hard.
Julian exhaled slowly. “That’s not a small decision.”
“I know.”
“Once you do that, there’s no pulling it back.”
“I know.”
He studied her.
“You’re sure?”
Adele nodded.
“Yes.”
Across the city, things were already moving faster than they could track.
Liam stood in front of a screen, messages flooding in faster than he could respond. Calls. Emails. Alerts.
Everything was escalating.
“Damn it,” he muttered.
Selene leaned against the desk, arms crossed. “How bad?”
“Worse than I thought,” Liam replied. “Someone is pushing it.”
Selene’s eyes narrowed. “Not Katherine?”
“She’s in custody,” Liam said. “Or at least… she should be.”
That “should” hung in the air.
Selene didn’t like it.
“Then who?” she asked.
Liam didn’t answer immediately.
Because he didn’t know.
And that was the problem.
Back at Adele’s apartment—
Isabel hadn’t left.
She sat curled into herself on the couch, scrolling through her phone with shaking hands.
“They’re talking about you,” she whispered.
Adele didn’t react.
“They’re speculating,” Isabel continued. “Some people are defending you but—” her voice broke, “—some aren’t.”
Adele nodded slowly.
“That’s expected.”
Isabel looked up. “How are you so calm?”
Adele’s answer was quiet.
“I’m not calm,” she said. “I’m just done breaking in private.”
That silenced Isabel.
A moment passed.
Then—
“I’ll do it,” Isabel said suddenly.
Adele turned to her.
“What?”
“I’ll confess,” Isabel said, her voice trembling but firm. “Publicly. Everything. My part in it. Katherine’s role. All of it.”
Julian, still standing nearby, frowned slightly. “That puts a target on you.”
Isabel let out a weak laugh. “I already am one.”
Adele watched her.
Carefully.
“Why now?” she asked.
Isabel swallowed. “Because if I don’t… then she still wins.”
That answer felt real.
Raw.
Messy.
But real.
Adele nodded once. “Then we do it properly.”
Julian crossed his arms. “We coordinate. No impulsive statements.”
Selene’s voice came through the speaker just then—Liam must have connected the call.
“Too late for that.”
All of them stilled.
“What do you mean?” Julian asked.
Selene didn’t sugarcoat it.
“I mean Isabel is already trending.”
Isabel’s face drained of color. “What?”
Liam’s voice followed. “Someone leaked your messages.”
A beat.
Then—
“What messages?” Isabel asked, her voice barely there.
No one answered immediately.
Because they already knew.
But Liam said it anyway.
“Your conversations with Katherine.”
Silence.
Absolute.
Devastating.
Isabel’s hands started shaking uncontrollably. “No… no, that’s not possible. Those were private.”
Selene’s voice hardened. “Nothing is private anymore.”
Adele’s stomach dropped.
This wasn’t random.
This was targeted.
Precise.
Calculated.
“Someone is cleaning up loose ends,” Julian said quietly.
Liam agreed. “And framing the narrative before we can.”
Isabel looked like she might collapse.
“They’re going to think I’m the only one responsible,” she whispered.
Adele stepped forward immediately.
“No,” she said. “Not if we move first.”
Selene spoke again. “You don’t have time to wait. If you’re going public, it has to be now.”
Adele nodded.
Decision made.
“Then we do it now,” she said.
Julian looked at her. “Together.”
She shook her head.
“No,” she said. “I start it. Then Isabel follows.”
Isabel blinked. “Why?”
“Because they expect you to look guilty,” Adele said. “They don’t expect me to stand beside you.”
That… shifted something.
Liam let out a breath. “That could work.”
Selene added, “It changes the narrative from scandal to exposure.”
Julian still looked uneasy.
“This puts you right in the center of it,” he said to Adele.
“I already am,” she replied.
An hour later—
Everything changed.
Adele sat in front of the camera.
No makeup.
No staging.
No performance.
Just her.
Julian stood off to the side.
Liam on another call.
Selene coordinating in real time.
Isabel pacing like she might pass out.
“Ready?” Julian asked softly.
Adele nodded.
And then—
She pressed record.
For a second, she didn’t speak.
She just looked into the camera.
Letting the silence settle.
Then—
“My name is Adele,” she said. “And if you’ve seen what’s been circulating about me… I’m not going to deny it.”
Julian’s chest tightened.
Isabel froze.
Adele continued.
“What you saw is real. But it’s not the whole truth.”
Her voice didn’t shake.
Not once.
“What you didn’t see is how it got there. Who was behind it. And why.”
Selene whispered through the speaker, “Good…”
Adele leaned slightly forward.
“I was manipulated,” she said. “Not just emotionally, but systematically. Information was controlled around me. Access was limited. People I trusted made decisions for me without my knowledge.”
Isabel covered her mouth.
Adele didn’t stop.
“I’m not saying this to gain sympathy,” she added. “I’m saying it because silence protects the wrong people.”
That line—
That line shifted everything.
Liam muttered, “That’s it…”
Adele took a breath.
“And I’m not the only one involved,” she said. “There are others who were used. Some knowingly. Some not.”
Isabel’s eyes filled with tears.
Adele glanced briefly off-camera.
At her.
Then back.
“And they deserve the chance to tell the truth too.”
She stopped.
Just like that.
No over-explaining.
No dramatics.
She reached forward.
And ended the recording.
Silence.
Then—
Liam’s phone exploded with notifications.
Selene’s voice sharpened. “It’s spreading. Fast.”
Julian looked at Adele.
“You just changed everything,” he said quietly.
Adele exhaled.
“No,” she replied.
“I just started it.”
And then—
The twist hit.
Hard.
Unexpected.
Brutal.
Liam’s phone buzzed again.
He checked it.
And froze.
Julian noticed immediately. “What?”
Liam didn’t answer.
He just turned the screen.
A headline.
Fresh.
Explosive.
“KATHERINE HALE RELEASED — LACK OF SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE.”
Silence dropped like a bomb.
Selene’s voice came through, sharp and disbelieving. “That’s not possible. We had enough—”
Liam’s jaw tightened.
“Someone intervened,” he said.
Julian’s expression darkened instantly.
Adele felt it.
That shift.
That dread.
“Who?” she asked quietly.
No one answered.
Because they didn’t know.
But they all felt it.
This wasn’t over.
Not even close.
And somewhere—
Someone powerful had just stepped in.
