CHAPTER 53: The Blood Wolf King

CHAPTER 53: The Blood Wolf King

Alex’s POV

The monster filled the entire mouth of the cave. It was huge, hulking, and impossibly ancient. Its shoulders scraped the stone. Its breath fogged the cold air. Its glowing crimson eyes swept across the darkness until they landed on me; On us.

“Give me the girl,” it growled.

I stepped forward, blocking Ella with my entire body, blade raised. “Over my dead body.”

The beast chuckled; a low, rolling sound that made dust fall from the ceiling.

“That” it said, “can be arranged.”

The wolf lunged. Stone cracked under its weight. I shoved Ella aside and met it mid-charge. My blade slid along its hide, sparking like metal scraping armor. It didn’t howl or flinch. It barely noticed the wound.

“Alex!” Ella screamed.

“Stay back!” I shouted, gripping my sword with both hands.

The wolf swiped its massive paw. I ducked, barely avoiding claws long enough to disembowel an ox. The air pressure alone shoved me into the wall. Pain shot down my spine, but adrenaline kept me steady.

The monster circled me, slow, confident.

“You defend her,” it said, nostrils flaring. “Even when she trembles. Even when fear saturates her scent.”

“Say anything about her again…” I snarled, “and I’ll rip your throat out myself.”

The wolf blinked like it found me amusing. “Ah. Attachment.”

I tightened my grip. “Love.”

Ella gasped softly behind me.

The creature grinned. “So it is true. A forbidden bond. The Alpha chooses the omega.”

“She’s mine,” I growled. “And no curse, no Seer, no monster will take her from me.”

The wolf’s expression shifted. Something like respect. Or recognition.

But then its eyes slid past me and Ella, To the stone ledge Where Lyra lay, half-conscious, glowing faintly under the skin.

The wolf’s nostrils flared sharply.

“There,” it whispered. “The stench of the curse. The Seer’s chains.”

It stepped forward, Toward Lyra.
I moved to block it, but Ella grabbed my arm.

“Alex…” her voice shook. “He’s not after me.”

The wolf snarled impatiently. “Step aside. I do not want the trembling one.”

Ella flinched. I angled my body in front of hers again.

“You’re not touching her,” I said.

The wolf’s red eyes snapped to me. “I speak of the cursed vessel.”

Cursed Vessel.
My heart stopped.

Its gaze slid toward Lyra again. “She is marked.”

Ella’s breath cracked. “Lyra?”

Before I could move, the wolf leapt over me with terrifying speed and landed beside Lyra. The ground trembled under its weight. Torchlight flickered wildly as the beast lowered its enormous head.

I ran forward and slammed my blade into its shoulder.

It turned its head. Not angry, Not pained.
Almost bored.

“You cannot kill me with iron, boy.”

Ella rushed to Lyra’s side, dropping to her knees.

“Lyra? Lyra, can you hear me?”

Lyra’s skin shimmered faintly with glowing veins, pulsing like they held liquid light. Her eyelids fluttered. Her breathing hitched and stuttered, shallow and strained.

The wolf leaned down until its nose nearly touched hers.

“I smell the Blood Moon Mark,” it said softly. “The curse of fate.”

Ella’s voice trembled. “Lyra, what did the Seer do to you?”

Lyra’s eyes snapped open white, glowing, empty.

She looked straight at Ella.

“She made a choice,” Lyra whispered. “For power.”

“No,” Ella whispered. “No, you said…Lyra, you told me…”

Lyra smiled weakly. “She said I had two options: bend… or break. I didn’t want to die.”

The wolf growled approvingly.

“She chose to live.”

“That’s not living,” Ella breathed. “This isn’t, this isn’t life, Lyra…”

Lyra’s glowing eyes softened. “I know.”

A tremor shook her body. She coughed, and glowing dust spilled from her lips. Ella recoiled in horror.

“Alex… Alex, help her”

I grabbed Lyra’s shoulders. Her skin was burning hot, like embers smoldering beneath her flesh.

“Lyra, focus on me,” I said. “Tell me what the Seer did.”

She stared at me, tears leaking from the corners of her glowing eyes.
“I saw everything,” she whispered. “The future. The blood. The king waking. And… and him.”

“Who?” Ella demanded.

Lyra’s gaze shifted to her. “The one who wants me.”

Ella’s voice cracked. “Why you?”

Lyra laughed weakly a sound hollow and terrified. “Because I was foolish enough… to want power.”

The wolf leaned forward again and inhaled deeply over Lyra’s neck. She stiffened as the runes glowed brighter.

“Yes,” the beast rumbled. “The mark is almost complete.”

Ella lunged forward. “DON’T TOUCH HER!”

I grabbed her waist, holding her back. “Ella, stay behind me!”

The wolf ignored us both.

“She belongs to the Blood Moon King,” it said.

The cave went silent.

Lyra’s breath hitched.
“I know,” she whispered.

Ella’s eyes filled with panic. “Lyra, NO…”

The wolf stepped back, And Lyra rose.
Her movements weren’t her own. Her limbs trembled violently, but she stood, barefoot on the cold stone, white eyes glowing brighter than the torches.

Ella reached for her desperately.

“Lyra please…stop”

Lyra smiled.
A soft, broken smile.

“Ella,” she whispered, voice cracking, “run.”

The ground split beneath her feet.

Red light shot upward, shaking the cave.

The wolf howled, bowing its head in reverence as the symbol of the Blood Moon burned onto Lyra’s skin; bright, violent, and consuming.

Ella screamed.

I grabbed her, pulling her to my chest as Lyra collapsed again, light flickering around her like dying sparks.

The wolf lowered itself.

“The vessel is ready,” it said. “The king will rise.”

Ella clutched my shirt, sobbing into my chest.

“Alex… Alex, what’s happening to her?”

I tightened my arms around her, jaw clenching.

“She’s being claimed,” I whispered.
“By something that should never have existed.”

The torches blew out.

The cave went dark.

And a new voice low, ancient, powerful rumbled through the stone.

“My bride… is awake.”
