Chapter 52: The Caves of Echoing Blood

Chapter 52: The Caves of Echoing Blood

Ella’s POV

The forest swallowed us whole.

Branches whipped my arms as Alex pulled me along, Lyra limp over his shoulder. The Seer’s words still rang inside my skull; You are marked, little wolf. I didn’t know what it meant, but the weight of it pressed into my bones, heavy and cold.

Behind us, the cliffside shuddered again, another distant rumble shaking the earth.

Alex didn’t slow. “We’re close,” he said, voice low, strained from carrying Lyra’s weight. “There’s an old cave system ahead. No trackers can trail scents in there.”

“Is she still breathing?” I asked, my voice cracking.

“Barely,” he muttered. “Her pulse is weak. Whatever that Seer did… it’s draining her.”

The path narrowed as we reached a curtain of hanging vines. Alex pushed through them, revealing a jagged opening in the mountain. The air inside was cool and damp, thick with the mineral scent of ancient stone.

We entered, The world outside went silent.

The cave swallowed the light, leaving only shadows. Alex gently lowered Lyra onto a flat stone ledge. She winced even unconscious, as if trapped in some hidden pain.

I knelt beside her, brushing a strand of her hair away. “She doesn’t deserve this,” I whispered.

Alex paused, looking at me strangely. “That’s not what you said before.”

“I know,” I admitted, throat tight. “But seeing her like this… she’s still human. She’s still someone’s daughter.”

Alex’s jaw clenched, a flicker of emotion crossing his features.

“She’s dangerous, Ella,” he said quietly. “And she’s hiding something. Something big.”

I nodded, because I felt it too.

But before I could speak, Lyra gasped; sharp, violent. Her eyes didn’t open, but her fingers curled into fists.

“Alex,” I breathed. “Something’s wrong.”

A pulse of energy rippled across her skin, faint but visible like dust caught in moonlight.

Alex moved instantly, grabbing my hand and pulling me back. “Get away from her.”

“But…”

“Ella, look.”

Lyra’s chest rose, then fell too quickly. Her veins darkened beneath her skin like ink spreading through water.

“What is happening to her?” I whispered.

Alex stared, golden eyes narrowing. “This isn’t physical. It’s magic.”

My stomach twisted. “From the Seer?”

He nodded once. “Or something older.”

A sudden wind swept through the cave; impossible, because there were no openings. The torch near the wall flickered wildly.

Then Lyra’s lips parted, A sound escaped her.

Not a breath, Not a word.
A whisper.

At first it was too soft to understand. Then it grew sharper, clearer, cutting through the darkness like a blade.

“They are coming…”

Alex stiffened. “Who’s coming?”

Lyra’s eyes snapped open; pure white, glowing. Not silver like the Seer. Not her usual blue.

Something else.

“Blood wolves,” she rasped.

The cave froze around us.

My heart slammed against my chest. “Blood wolves don’t exist. They’re legends.”

Alex didn’t look away from Lyra. His voice was low. Controlled. Terrified.

“Not legends,” he said. “Extinct.”

Lyra convulsed, her body arching. I grabbed her hand without thinking. She squeezed weakly, nails digging into my palm.

“They smell the mark…” she whispered. “Ella… you must run…”

“No!” I cried. “I’m not leaving you!”

Alex grabbed my shoulders. “Ella, listen…”

But Lyra’s voice rose again, louder this time, echoing off the stone.

“He will find you. He will tear the world apart to get you back.”

My blood went cold. “Who?”

Lyra’s white eyes locked onto Alex.

“Her mate.”

The word crashed into the cave like thunder.

I stumbled backward. “Mate? No I don’t—Alex, I don’t have…”

“Ella,” Alex said sharply, “something is wrong with her. Don’t take anything she says as truth.”

But Lyra’s gaze didn’t waver.

“This one,” she breathed, eyes glowing brighter, “isn’t your Alpha. He was never meant to be.”

Alex’s jaw tightened. Pain flashed behind his eyes; real, raw.

Before either of us could speak, the cave trembled.

A howl, deep, ancient, monstrous cut through the night outside.

Alex moved instantly, stepping in front of me, body tense. “They’re here. Move behind me.”

Lyra collapsed again, the glow fading from her eyes, leaving her limp and shivering.

I dropped to my knees beside her. “Lyra—Lyra, stay with me!”

Her fingers brushed my cheek weakly. “It’s starting… the mark… the bond…”

Then her hand fell.

She went still.
Not dead,but close.

The howling grew louder.
Multiple voices.

Claws scraping against stone outside the cave mouth.

Alex stepped closer to me, his hand brushing mine just briefly deliberate, and instinctive.

“Ella,” he whispered, golden eyes burning, “I don’t care what she said. I’m not letting anything take you.”

His breath trembled.

“Mate or not.”

The shadows outside thickened.

Footsteps. Snarls. The sound of tearing earth.

Then a voice rumbled through the cave, deep enough to shake dust from the ceiling.

“Give me the girl.”

Alex’s hand tightened around his blade.

“Over my dead body.”

The creature outside laughed, a sound that felt like death.

“We can arrange that.”

The cave entrance darkened.

Something enormous stepped in.

And the fight began.
