CHAPTER 54: The King in the Darkness

CHAPTER 54: The King in the Darkness

Ella’s POV

The darkness swallowed everything.
Not the soft kind of darkness that comes when the moon hides behind clouds.

This one felt alive; heavy, suffocating, wrapping around my throat like cold fingers. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move. My heart hammered so fast I thought it would burst.

Alex’s arms tightened around me.

“Stay close,” he whispered into my ear, voice tight.

A low sound like distant thunder rolled through the cave. The walls shook. Dust rained down. Something ancient was waking… crawling up from below the earth.

Lyra lay in the center of the floor, glowing faintly. Her body twitched. Her eyes fluttered open, unfocused.

“Lyra,” I whispered, reaching for her. Alex jerked me back before I could touch her.

“Ella, don’t,” he hissed. “She’s not herself.”

A breath of wind cold as winter swept through the cave. Torches sputtered, but none lit.

And then… A shape formed in the darkness.

Tall. Human-shaped. Not fully solid. Like a shadow made of mist and blood-red light. A crown floated above its head, broken, jagged, almost like a torn bone.

His voice filled the cavern.

“Finally.”
A pause.
“My vessel breathes.”

Lyra whimpered, curling in on herself as the shadow drifted closer. Her glowing veins pulsed brighter, answering him.

“Don’t touch her!” I cried.

The shadow turned toward me.

The temperature dropped instantly.

I felt its gaze not eyes…but presence, settle on me like ice pressing against my soul.

“You,” it said softly. “The wolf’s mate.”

A tremor shot down my spine.

Alex stepped in front of me so fast I barely saw him move.

“If you come near her,” he snarled, “I will tear you apart.”

The shadow king tilted his head.
Almost curious.

“You speak boldly for a creature who still breathes only because I allow it.”

Alex didn’t back down. His wolf glowed beneath his skin, shadows flickering around him like heat. His eyes shifted, gold and furious.

“She’s mine,” he growled.

“And she will remain yours,” the king said simply. “I have no interest in her.”

My knees nearly buckled with relief until the king finished:

“I want the marked one.”
Lyra.

She writhed on the floor, choking on glowing dust, her fingers clawing at the stone. She was fighting something, someone inside her.

“No,” I whispered. “No, Lyra didn’t choose you”

“She chose survival,” the king corrected, voice echoing. “She took the Seer’s mark. She opened the door. I merely walked through.”

Lyra’s scream ripped through the cave.

My heart cracked.

She wasn’t evil. She wasn’t wicked.
She was terrified.

And she had been alone.

“Let her go!” I shouted, stepping around Alex before he could grab me.

The king’s head turned sharply toward me.

“Bold little thing.”

I trembled but didn’t stop. I moved until I was right beside Lyra, dropping to my knees and pulling her shaking body into my arms.

“Ella” Alex’s voice was torn between panic and fury.

“I won’t leave her!”

Lyra’s glowing eyes found mine.
Tears streamed down her face.

“Ella… please… kill me,” she whispered.

My breath shattered.

“I can’t,” I choked. “I won’t.”

The king laughed; deep, ancient, amused.
“You cannot kill her. Her soul is bound to me now.”

Alex stepped forward, sword raised. “Then I’ll kill you.”

The cave shook as the shadow’s gaze slid to him.

“You cannot kill what has no form.”

Alex lunged anyway.

The blade sliced through the king’s shadowy And hit nothing.

A gust of freezing wind threw Alex backward, sending him skidding across the stone.

“Alex!” I ran toward him, but the king’s voice boomed again.

“Do not touch my vessel.”

Lyra’s body jerked violently. She floated off the ground, limbs limp, hair drifting around her as if underwater. Light pulsed through her like a heartbeat.

“No! No, no, NO!” I screamed.

Alex crawled to his feet, blood running down his temple. “Ella, don’t look at him, look at Lyra.”

He grabbed my hand.
“Focus,” he whispered. “If she hears you, she can fight him.”

Lyra’s glow intensified, so bright I had to squint.

“Lyra!” I shouted, tears burning my eyes. “You are not his! You’re still here. You’re still you!”

Her lips parted.

“Ella…” Her voice was faint and Distant.
“Run…”

“I’m not leaving you!”

The king spoke again, and the cave trembled violently.

“She belongs to the Blood Moon.”

“No,” Alex growled. “She belongs to herself.”

With a roar, Alex shifted.

Bones cracked, fur erupted, and his massive wolf form filled the cave. Golden eyes blazed with absolute fury.

The king paused.

“I see,” he murmured. “So this is the one fate twists around the trembling girl.”

Alex’s wolf growled deep and murderous.

And then He attacked the king again.

Not with steel, with power.

A shockwave of golden energy burst from Alex’s chest, slamming into the shadow. The king staggered; not hurt, but pushed.

It was the first time anything had affected him at all.

The king tilted his head, intrigued.

“Ah,” he said softly. “Light.”

Alex’s wolf form braced for another attack, snarling.

The king looked between us.

“Interesting,” he said. “Very well.”

He raised a hand, and the ground beneath us cracked open.

“You may keep your little mate for now.”

A tendril of shadow wrapped around Lyra gently, almost protectively and pulled her toward him.

“Lyra!” I screamed, reaching out, fingers trembling, Alex jumped forward, jaws snapping.

But the king dissolved into darkness. Lyra vanished with him and The cave fell silent.

Alex shifted back, collapsing onto his knees, panting, bleeding.

I sank to the floor beside him, chest heaving, eyes blurred with tears.

“She’s gone,” I whispered.

Alex pulled me into his arms, holding me tight.

“We’ll get her back,” he murmured into my hair. “I swear to you, Ella. I will not let that monster keep her.”

My voice cracked.
“A king took her, Alex. A monster. How do we fight something like that?”

He cupped my face, forcing me to meet his eyes.

“We fight him together,” he said, voice steady. “And we don’t stop, not until Lyra is free.”

I buried my face in his chest.

The cave trembled one last time.

And far away, Lyra screamed.
