Chapter 87 Judgment Is Not Vengeance

Chapter 87 Judgment Is Not Vengeance

POV: Caelum

I stand at the border.

Waiting for death.

Expecting it. Welcoming it.

She refused me. Exiled me. Sent me away.

What else is there?

I am dying anyway. Deteriorating without her stabilization.

Might as well die here. Now. At the edge of her world.

At least then I die close to her. Even if she does not want me.

I sit down in the snow.

Wait.

My body is failing rapidly now. I feel it.

Heart irregular. Breathing labored. Vision dimming.

The bloodline madness consuming what little control remains.

Maybe hours. Maybe minutes.

But soon.

Footsteps behind me.

I do not turn. Do not care who it is.

Eryx sits beside me.

Says nothing at first. Just sits.

Then speaks.

"She is not going to kill you."

"I know. She exiled me instead."

"That terrifies you more."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because death is escape. Exile is consequence. I have to live with what I did. That is worse."

"Good. You should have to live with it."

We sit in silence.

Then Eryx speaks again.

"She made a choice today. Not just about you. About who she is. What she believes."

"I do not understand."

"She could have killed you. Could have let the void consume you completely. Strip your senses. Let you die in madness and pain. You would have deserved it."

"Yes."

"But she did not. Why do you think that is?"

"I do not know."

"Because killing you would make her like them. Like the throne. Like the system that destroyed her. She refuses to become what broke her."

I process that.

"She is better than me."

"Yes. But that is not the point. The point is she chooses to be better. Not because you deserve mercy. But because she deserves to be the kind of person who does not kill even when justified."

"That is... remarkable."

"Yes. That is who she is. Who she chose to become. Despite everything you did. Despite everything the throne did. She chose to be better."

He stands.

"She is going to let you live. Not for you. For her. Because she will not let you turn her into a killer. Will not let your crimes make her cruel."

"I am still dying."

"Yes. Your body is failing. Nothing changes that. But your death will not be at her hand. Will not be her choice. Just consequence of your own dependence."

"What difference does that make?"

"All the difference. She is not responsible for your death. You are. Your choices. Your consequences. Your failure."

He starts to walk away.

Stops.

"She is stripping your dominance. Permanently. Not violently. Not painfully. Just... removing it. You will live without it. However long you have left."

"How?"

"Proximity. Exposure. The void does not just nullify temporarily. It can erase permanently. She is choosing erasure."

"Why?"

"So you understand. Truly understand. What she lived with. What it means to be powerless. To exist without the systems you relied on. To be human. Just human. Nothing more."

I feel it then.

The last threads of my Alpha instincts cutting away.

Not painful. Just... gone.

The dominance I relied on. The hierarchy I understood. The pheromones I used.

All of it erasing.

Leaving just me. Human. Weak. Mortal.

"This is worse than death," I whisper.

"Yes. That is the point. You do not get the easy escape. You get to live. Human. Powerless. Remembering what you lost. Understanding what she endured. Carrying that knowledge until your body finally gives out."

Eryx walks away.

Leaves me sitting there.

Human now. Truly human.

No Alpha instincts. No dominance. No power.

Just a man. Dying. Alone.

Exactly what I deserve.

I sit until dark.

Then force myself up.

My body protests. Weak. Failing.

But I stand anyway.

Start walking south.

Away from the City. Away from her. Away from everything.

Exiled. Human. Dying.

This is judgment.

Not vengeance. Not cruelty.

Just consequence.

I chose power. Now I have none.

I chose the throne. Now I have nothing.

I chose to use her. Now I lose everything.

Balance. Justice. Truth.

I walk through the night.

My body deteriorating with each step.

But I keep moving.

Because dying while walking is better than dying while waiting.

Because action is better than surrender.

Because even powerless, even human, even dying, I can still choose to move forward.

That is all I have left.

Choice. Movement. Consequence.

I think about what Eryx said.

She refused to become what broke her.

Refused to kill even when justified.

Chose to be better even when I deserved worse.

That is strength I never had.

Courage I never showed.

Goodness I never chose.

She is everything I should have been.

Everything I failed to become.

Everything I lost when I chose the throne.

The night passes.

I collapse at dawn.

Cannot continue. Too weak.

Lie in the snow. Breathing shallow.

This is it. The end.

Dying alone. Exiled. Human.

Exactly what I deserve.

I close my eyes.

Wait for darkness.

It does not come.

Someone lifts me.

Carries me somewhere.

I do not resist. Cannot resist.

Just let it happen.

Accept whatever comes.

A shelter. Crude but warm.

They lay me down. Give me water.

I open my eyes.

A stranger. Human. Kind-faced.

"You are dying," they say.

"Yes."

"Do you want help?"

"I do not deserve help."

"That is not what I asked."

I think about that.

Do I want help? Do I want to live?

Even like this? Even powerless? Even exiled?

"Yes," I whisper. "I want to live."

"Then I will help. Not because you deserve it. Because everyone deserves basic kindness. Even the broken."

They tend to me.

Food. Water. Warmth.

Basic kindness from a stranger who owes me nothing.

It is more than I deserve.

And exactly what Nyra would have given.

Kindness without judgment. Help without condition.

Being better than the systems that broke us.

I sleep.

And dream of her whole.

Of the City thriving.

Of a world I will never be part of.

But that exists anyway.

Better. Stronger. Freer.

Without me.

Despite me.

Beyond me.

And that is how it should be.
