Chapter 86 The Apology That Comes Too Late

Chapter 86 The Apology That Comes Too Late

POV: Caelum

I kneel without being told.

Not because instinct demands it. Not because dominance forces it.

Because it is right.

She stands above me. Whole. Free. Powerful.

I kneel below. Broken. Chained. Nothing.

As it should be.

The City watches. Silent. Witnessing.

I look up at her.

"May I speak?"

"You already are."

"May I say everything? Everything I should have said before?"

Nyra considers.

Then nods.

"Speak. But understand. Nothing you say will change what comes next. This is not negotiation. This is confession."

"I understand."

I take a breath.

Begin.

"I chose power when I could have chosen you. Every single time. Every decision. Every moment. I chose the throne."

She does not respond. Just listens.

"When they brought you to the kennels. When they told me you would stabilize my bloodline. I should have refused. Should have said no. Should have demanded they find another way."

"But you did not."

"No. I accepted. Because it was easy. Because it worked. Because I was a coward."

"Yes."

"For three years I let them bleed you. Let them cage you. Let them treat you like property. I told myself it was temporary. That when I became king, things would change. That I would free you. Protect you. Choose you."

"But you did not."

"No. When the fated mate arrived, I chose her. Chose stability. Chose the throne's approval over your life."

My voice breaks.

"I sent you to the riot zones. Knowing you would probably die. Knowing you were too weak to survive. And I did not check. Did not care. Did not even think about you once you were gone."

"No. You did not."

"I hid behind fate. Told myself the fated mate was destiny. That chemistry was truth. That pheromone bonds were absolute. But I knew better. Knew you were the one who truly stabilized me. Knew her calming was surface level. Knew it would fail."

"Yet you chose her anyway."

"Yes. Because she came with the throne's approval. With the system's blessing. With the easy path forward. And you came with complications. With questions. With the need to change."

Nyra's expression does not soften.

"Keep going."

"I knew you were not defective. The healers talked when they thought I could not hear. The Queen Regent discussed it in council. I knew you were rare. Powerful. Dangerous to the old order. And I chose to ignore it. Chose to use you anyway. Chose to let them classify you as broken because it made everything simpler."

"Simpler for you."

"Yes. Simpler for me. Easier for me. Better for me. Always me. Never you."

I look down at my bound hands.

"I told myself I loved you. Told myself our connection was real. That the years of bleeding built something. But it was not love. It was dependence. Mine. Not yours. I needed you. Used you. Called it love because that made it acceptable."

"It was not love."

"No. It was not. Love does not demand blood. Does not require suffering. Does not use and discard. What I did was not love. It was exploitation. Sustained. Deliberate. Unforgivable."

The silence stretches.

Heavy. Complete.

Then I speak the hardest truth.

"I am a coward. I have always been a coward. Too afraid to confront the system that crowned me. Too weak to stand against the throne. Too selfish to sacrifice anything that mattered."

"Yes."

"I destroyed you. Broke you. Used you until you had nothing left. Then threw you away when you stopped being useful. And I did it all while telling myself I was good. Noble. Dutiful. When the truth is I was just cruel."

"Yes."

"And now I come here. Dying. Desperate. Seeking what? Forgiveness? Absolution? A chance to feel better about myself before the end?"

"What are you seeking?"

I think about that.

Really think.

"Nothing. I seek nothing. I just needed to say it. Needed you to hear it. Needed to face truth even if it destroys me."

"And if I refuse to hear it? Refuse to accept your confession?"

"Then I respect that. Your choice. Your right. Your justice."

Nyra walks closer.

The void intensifies.

My last senses dim further.

But I do not retreat. Do not ask her to stop.

Just kneel there. Accept it.

"Do you want to die?" she asks.

"No. But I accept that I will. That I deserve to. That it is consequence for choice."

"What do you want then?"

I meet her eyes.

"To stay. Anywhere near you. In any capacity. Guard. Servant. Exile. Prisoner. Anything. Just... near you. Where I can see you whole. Where I can remember what I lost. Where I can spend whatever time I have left understanding what I destroyed."

"Why?"

"Because you deserve to see me broken the way I broke you. You deserve to watch me suffer the way I watched you bleed. You deserve justice. And justice is me living with what I did."

"That is not justice. That is self-punishment."

"Maybe. But it is all I have to offer."

Nyra is quiet for a long time.

Studying me. Deciding.

The City watches. Waiting.

Finally, she speaks.

"No."

The word is soft. Final. Absolute.

My heart stops.

"What?"

"I said no. You cannot stay. Cannot serve. Cannot remain anywhere near me."

"Please. I am begging. Let me—"

"No."

She steps back.

The void releases slightly. Enough for me to breathe.

"You want to stay near me. To watch me thrive. To suffer proximity to what you lost. You think that is justice. That your pain will balance mine."

"Yes."

"You are wrong. Your pain does not balance anything. Your suffering does not erase mine. Your regret does not rebuild what you broke."

"I know. But—"

"No. You do not get to stay. Do not get proximity. Do not get the comfort of seeing me whole while you are broken. That is not justice. That is indulgence."

"Then what? What do you want from me?"

"Nothing. I want nothing from you. Not apology. Not suffering. Not presence. Not anything."

The words hit like blows.

Each one stripping away hope I should not have had.

"I am sorry," I whisper. "For everything. For all of it. For being too late. Too broken. Too wrong."

"I know."

"Is there anything I can do? Anything that would matter? Anything that would help?"

"Yes."

Hope flares again.

"What? Tell me. Anything."

"Leave. Go far away. Live your life without me. Die without me. Exist without seeking me. That is what I want."

"That is not justice. That is exile."

"Exactly. Justice is you living with what you did. Far from me. Unable to see what I became. Unable to witness what you lost. Just existing with the knowledge. The memory. The consequence."

She turns away.

"Guards. Take him to the border. Release him. Let him go."

"Nyra, please—"

"No."

She does not look back.

"Your apology is noted. Your regret is acknowledged. Your confession is accepted. But you are not forgiven. You are not welcomed. You are not wanted. Go. Live or die on your own. But go."

Guards approach.

Grab my arms.

I do not resist.

Just let them lift me.

Lead me away.

"Nyra!" I call one last time.

She stops walking.

Does not turn.

"What?"

"Thank you. For listening. For seeing me. For giving me the chance to tell the truth."

"You are welcome. Now leave."

She walks away.

Into the City. Into her life. Into a future that does not include me.

The guards drag me through the streets.

People watch without sympathy.

Without hatred either.

Just indifference.

I am nothing to them.

Less than nothing.

A problem solved. A threat removed. A past ended.

We reach the border.

The edge of the City. The edge of the void. The edge of everything.

They remove my chains.

Set me free.

"Go," one says. "Do not come back. If you return, we will not be kind."

"Where do I go?"

"Anywhere. Everywhere. Nowhere. Not our concern."

They leave me there.

Standing at the border. Free but lost.

I look back at the City.

One last time.

Try to see her. To glimpse her one more time.

Cannot.

She is gone. Into the City. Into freedom. Into wholeness.

Without me. Despite me. Beyond me.

And I am here. Alone. Dying. Exiled.

With nothing but truth and regret and the weight of what I destroyed.

This is justice.

This is consequence.

This is what I deserve.

I turn south.

And walk away from the only good thing I ever had.
