Chapter 88 The Sentence
Chapter 88 The Sentence
POV: Caelum
I wake to voices.
Distant. Arguing. Deciding.
The stranger who helped me speaks with others.
"He is the heir. The one who fled."
"Why help him?"
"Because he is dying. Because basic kindness costs nothing."
"He does not deserve kindness."
"Maybe not. But we do not become cruel just because others were."
The argument continues. I cannot follow all of it.
But the kindness wins.
They let me stay. Give me shelter. Basic care.
Not because I deserve it. Because they choose it.
Days pass. Maybe weeks.
My body stabilizes slightly. Not healing. Just... lasting.
Dying slower than expected.
The stranger brings news.
"The City held a gathering. About you."
"What?"
"They debated what to do. Whether exile was enough. Whether you should face more."
"What did they decide?"
"They invited survivors to speak. People hurt by the throne. By the old system. By you specifically."
My chest tightens.
"And?"
"They spoke. For hours. Told their stories. Their losses. What the throne took from them."
"What did they say about me?"
"That you were complicit. That you benefited. That you chose the throne over them repeatedly."
"They are right."
"Yes. They are."
The stranger is quiet for a moment.
"Nyra listened to all of it. Did not interrupt. Did not defend you. Just listened."
"Then what?"
"Then she spoke. Said you would face judgment. True judgment. Not vengeance. Not execution. But consequence."
"What does that mean?"
"The City voted. On your sentence."
I sit up slowly. Body protesting.
"What was the sentence?"
"Exile. Without throne. Without bond. Without dominance. You live the rest of your life human. Powerless. Remembering."
"That is what she already chose."
"Yes. But the City confirmed it. Made it official. Not just her decision. Everyone's choice."
"Did anyone argue for worse?"
"Some wanted death. Some wanted imprisonment. Some wanted public punishment."
"What changed their minds?"
"Half-bloods spoke. Said making you powerless forever was worse than death. That living human, watching the world change without you, understanding what you lost, was greater punishment than any execution."
"They are right."
"Nyra agreed. Said killing you would be easy. Letting you live was justice."
The stranger hands me water. I drink slowly.
"There is more."
"What?"
"They escorted you to the border formally. As part of the sentence. Witnesses saw. Recorded. Made it official."
"I do not remember that."
"You were barely conscious. But it happened. Guards brought you to the edge. Released you. Declared you exiled."
"Without throne."
"The throne fell already. The Queen Regent was overthrown. The monarchy dissolved. There is no throne to return to."
"Good."
"Without bond."
"I have no bond. The fated mate disappeared. No one knows where."
"Probably for the best. She was as much a victim as anyone."
"Yes. She was."
"Without dominance."
"Nyra stripped that. I feel it. The absence. The void. I am just human now."
"Yes. Permanently. The void does not reverse. Once erased, dominance is gone forever."
I process this.
The sentence is permanent. Unchangeable. Final.
"How long do I have?" I ask.
"Weeks. Maybe a month. Your body is failing. Nothing can stop it."
"Good."
"Good?"
"Yes. Living with this. With what I did. With who I became. That is punishment enough. Death will be mercy."
The stranger nods.
"Where will you go?"
"I do not know. Away. Somewhere I can die quietly. Without hurting anyone else."
"You could stay here. We would care for you until the end."
"Why? Why show me kindness?"
"Because someone has to. Because cruelty breeds cruelty. Because being better means choosing better. Even for the broken."
Tears sting my eyes.
"You sound like her."
"Good. She is worth sounding like."
Days pass.
I grow weaker. Frailer.
The end is close now. I feel it.
The stranger brings more news.
"The City sent word. Official word. About your sentence."
"What does it say?"
"That Caelum, former heir, has been judged. Found guilty of complicity, exploitation, and cowardice. Sentenced to exile. Stripped of dominance. Lives the remainder of his days human. Powerless. Remembering."
"Remembering. That is the cruelest part."
"Yes. That is the point."
"Did she... did Nyra add anything? Any message?"
The stranger hesitates.
"She said one thing. After the sentence was announced."
"What?"
"She said 'May he live long enough to understand. Long enough to truly see. Long enough to know what he destroyed.'"
"Not a blessing. A curse."
"Both. She wants you to live. But suffer. Not physically. Emotionally. Spiritually. Understanding."
"I understand now."
"Do you? Truly?"
I think about that.
About Nyra bleeding for three years. About her powerlessness. About her being used.
About her surviving anyway. Building anyway. Becoming whole anyway.
"Yes. I understand. Not perfectly. Not completely. But enough."
"Good. Then the sentence serves its purpose."
More days pass.
My body shuts down slowly. System by system.
I am ready. Have been ready.
Death will be release. Escape. Peace.
But not yet.
Not until I finish one more thing.
I ask the stranger for paper. Pen.
They bring it.
I write.
Slowly. Carefully. Truthfully.
A confession. A testimony. A warning.
Everything I did. Everything I chose. Everything I destroyed.
For history. For record. For anyone who comes after.
So they know. So they understand. So they do not repeat my mistakes.
I finish at dawn.
Hand it to the stranger.
"Give this to the City. To Nyra. To anyone who will listen."
"What is it?"
"Truth. Finally. Completely. Without excuse."
They take it. Promise to deliver it.
I lie back.
Exhausted. Finished.
I have said everything. Confessed everything. Acknowledged everything.
All that remains is dying.
And accepting that my death changes nothing.
Nyra will still thrive. The City will still grow. The world will still change.
Without me. Despite me. Beyond me.
As it should be.
I close my eyes.
Wait for the end.
And hope that somewhere, somehow, my death brings some small measure of peace.
Not to me. I do not deserve peace.
But to her. To the people I hurt. To the world I failed.
Let my death be useful since my life was not.
Let it serve as warning. As cautionary tale. As example of what not to become.
Let something good come from my ending.
Even if I never see it.
Even if I die alone.
Even if no one remembers me with kindness.
Let it matter anyway.
Please.
Let it matter.
