Chapter 85 The Line That Ends an Era

Chapter 85 The Line That Ends an Era

POV: Caelum

They come for me at noon the next day.

I have not slept. Cannot sleep.

Just lie awake thinking about what to say. How to say it.

How to make her understand.

Even though understanding will not save me.

"Time," the guard says.

I stand. My body protests. Weak. Failing.

But I force myself upright.

This might be my last chance.

I will not waste it.

They lead me to the central zone again.

More people gathered this time. Hundreds. Maybe thousands.

All watching. All waiting to witness.

The heir facing judgment.

The powerful brought low.

The throne finally answering for its crimes.

Nyra stands where she stood yesterday.

Calm. Centered. Powerful.

Everything I am not.

I walk forward without prompting.

The guards release my arm. Let me approach alone.

I stop several paces from her.

Close enough to speak. Far enough to respect distance.

She looks at me. Really looks.

Studying. Measuring. Deciding.

"You rested?"

"No."

"You look worse."

"I feel worse."

"Good."

The City murmurs. Surprised by her bluntness.

But she does not care. Does not soften.

"Speak," she says. "Tell me why you came. What you want. What you think this conversation will accomplish."

I take a breath.

This is it. The moment. The truth.

"I came to apologize. To tell you that everything the throne did to you was wrong. That I was wrong. That I knew better and chose worse anyway."

"I already know that."

"I know. But I need to say it. Need you to hear it from me. Not from rumor. Not from assumption. From me."

"Why does it matter if I hear it from you?"

"Because you deserve to hear the person who hurt you acknowledge that hurt. Acknowledge the choice. Acknowledge the consequence."

Nyra is quiet for a moment.

Then speaks.

"Fine. Acknowledge it. Tell me everything. Do not spare yourself. Do not soften it. Tell me the truth."

I nod.

Gather courage.

Begin.

"I chose power over you. Every time. Every choice. Every moment I had to decide between the throne and your wellbeing, I chose the throne."

"Yes."

"I let them bleed you. For three years. I knew it hurt. Knew it damaged you. Knew it was wrong. And I allowed it anyway because it served me."

"Yes."

"I hid behind fate. Behind duty. Behind necessity. But the truth is simpler. I was a coward. Too afraid to confront the system. Too selfish to sacrifice my comfort for your freedom."

"Yes."

Each confirmation is a knife.

Cutting deeper. Exposing truth.

"When the fated mate arrived, I discarded you. Sent you to die. Did not check if you survived. Did not care as long as the problem was solved."

"Yes."

"I convinced myself it was duty. That I was protecting the kingdom. That stability mattered more than one person. But I was lying to myself. I was protecting my power. My position. My comfort."

"Yes."

My voice breaks.

"I destroyed you. Broke you. Used you until there was nothing left. Then threw you away like garbage. Like you never mattered. Like three years of bleeding for me meant nothing."

"Yes."

"And the worst part. The absolutely worst part. Is that I knew. I always knew. Knew you were not defective. Knew you were powerful. Knew the throne was lying. And I chose to believe the lie because the truth was inconvenient."

Nyra does not respond this time.

Just watches me break.

"I do not ask for forgiveness," I continue. "I do not deserve it. I do not ask for mercy. I do not deserve that either. I just ask that you know. That you understand. That the person who hurt you acknowledges what he did."

"And then what? You die feeling better about yourself?"

"No. I die knowing I told the truth. Finally. Even if it is too late."

"It is too late."

"I know."

"You cannot undo what you did."

"I know."

"You cannot fix what you broke."

"I know."

"Then why come? Why suffer this? Why not just die quietly in the south?"

"Because you deserved better. Deserved the truth. Deserved to hear me say it even if it changes nothing."

Nyra steps closer.

The void intensifies. My remaining senses dim.

But I do not step back. Do not retreat.

Just stand there. Accept it.

She looks up at me. Eyes hard.

"Do you love me?"

The question surprises me.

"I do not know. I do not think I know what love is. But I needed you. Relied on you. Valued you in whatever broken way I am capable of. Does that count as love? I do not know."

"Honest."

"It is all I have left."

"If you could go back. Change your choices. Would you?"

"Yes. Every single one."

"What would you choose differently?"

"Everything. I would refuse the throne. Refuse the system. Refuse to participate in anything that required your suffering. I would choose you over power. Over stability. Over everything."

"Easy to say now."

"Yes. But I mean it. Even knowing it is worthless. Even knowing it changes nothing. I mean it."

Nyra studies me for a long moment.

Then speaks the words that end everything.

"I believe you."

Hope flares.

She raises her hand. Cuts it off.

"But it does not matter. Believing you. Understanding you. Even knowing you mean it. None of that changes what you did. None of that erases the scars. None of that makes you worth saving."

The hope dies.

She is right. She is always right.

My legs weaken. I sink to my knees again.

Cannot help it. Cannot stand under the weight of truth.

She looks down at me.

"Caelum, welcome to my world. Here, your proud royal blood is worthless."

The words from yesterday. Repeated.

Reinforced.

Made permanent.

I bow my head.

"I know," I whisper.

The City watches in silence.

Witnessing the heir broken.

The powerful made powerless.

The throne finally fallen.

Nyra does not move. Does not speak.

Just stands there. Letting the moment settle.

Letting the words sink deep.

Letting the era end.
