Chapter 84 No Scent, No Throne

Chapter 84 No Scent, No Throne

POV: Caelum

They come for me at dawn.

Different guards this time. Still half-bloods. Still unafraid.

"She will see you," one says.

My heart jumps. Hope and terror mixing.

"Now?"

"Now. Move."

They unlock me from the wall stakes. Leave the wrist bindings.

Lead me outside.

The City is waking. People emerging from homes. Starting fires. Beginning their day.

All so normal. So ordinary.

Like I am not here. Like the heir walking through their streets means nothing.

Because it does not.

We walk through the main thoroughfare.

Children run past. Laughing. Playing.

One bumps into me. Stops. Looks up.

"Sorry, mister."

"It is fine."

She runs off without recognizing me. Without caring.

Just another adult. Nothing special.

Workers pass carrying supplies. Building materials. Food.

They nod politely. Move around us. Continue their tasks.

No one stops. No one stares. No one reacts.

I am invisible here.

Not in the way royals are invisible. Protected. Separate. Above.

In the way nobodies are invisible. Unremarkable. Common. Below.

It is humbling.

And right.

We pass a gathering space. People debating something.

Voices raised but not angry. Passionate. Engaged.

"We need more housing before winter."

"We need food storage first."

"We need both. How do we prioritize?"

"Vote. Like always."

"All in favor of housing first?"

Hands rise. Are counted.

"All in favor of food storage?"

More hands. Counted carefully.

"Food storage wins. We build that first. Housing next week."

Agreement. People disperse. No argument. No resentment.

Just consensus and movement.

Democracy in action.

Simple. Effective. Fair.

Everything the throne was not.

We keep walking.

Past healers treating patients. Teachers instructing children. Artisans creating.

All working together. All choosing their roles. All contributing.

Without hierarchy dictating. Without bloodline determining. Without dominance enforcing.

Just people. Choosing. Building. Living.

I see half-bloods leading discussions. Omegas managing supplies. Former Alphas taking orders from those with better expertise.

All equal. All valued. All necessary.

The system I was taught would collapse without hierarchy.

Thriving because there is no hierarchy.

"How does it work?" I ask quietly.

One guard glances at me.

"What?"

"This. All of this. How does a city function without Alphas ruling?"

"People choose. People contribute. People cooperate. Not complicated."

"But who leads? Who decides?"

"Everyone. Depending on expertise. Someone who knows building leads construction. Someone who knows healing leads medicine. Someone who knows strategy leads defense. Leadership is situational. Temporary. Earned."

"What if people disagree?"

"We discuss. We vote. We compromise. Sometimes we are wrong. We adapt. We learn."

"That is inefficient."

"That is fair. We prefer fair."

We reach the edge of the central zone.

The quietest place. Where dominance dies completely.

I feel it immediately.

The last threads of my Alpha instincts cut away.

No chemical signals. No pheromone reading. No hierarchy sensing.

Just nothing.

Total absence.

I stumble. The guards steady me.

"Easy. The void is strong here. She spends time in this place. It absorbs her influence."

"How long does it last?"

"Permanently. Once she marks a place, it stays marked. Dead zones for dominance forever."

We walk through the zone.

I feel stripped. Naked. Vulnerable.

Everything I relied on gone.

I am truly human here. Truly powerless.

Truly nothing.

Then I see her.

Nyra.

Standing on a platform overlooking the City.

Framed by ice and sky and stone.

She is different.

Not broken. Not bleeding. Not silent.

Whole. Strong. Free.

Everything I destroyed has rebuilt itself.

Better. Stronger. Without me.

She turns as we approach.

Our eyes meet.

I expect something. Anything.

Hatred. Anger. Pain. Something.

There is nothing.

Just calm. Just assessment. Just indifference.

I am nothing to her.

Less than nothing.

A problem to solve. A decision to make. A choice to execute.

But not a person who matters.

Not anymore.

My legs give out.

I drop to my knees.

Not commanded. Not forced.

Just collapse.

Because seeing her whole while I am broken is too much.

Seeing her strong while I am weak is unbearable.

Seeing her free while I am chained is justice.

The guards step back. Let me kneel.

The City watches in silence.

Hundreds of eyes. All witnessing.

No one speaks. No one moves.

Just watch.

Wait.

Nyra looks down at me.

Calm. Unafraid. Untouchable.

She speaks. Voice carrying without force.

"Caelum, welcome to my world. Here, your proud royal blood is worthless."

The words settle like a verdict.

Written into the air. Into history. Into truth.

My throat is tight. Eyes burning.

Everything I was. Everything I had. Everything I relied on.

Worthless.

All of it.

I bow my head.

Accept it.

She is right. She is always right.

"I know," I whisper.

The silence stretches.

Heavy. Complete. Final.

Then Nyra speaks again.

"Stand up."

I look up. Confused.

"What?"

"I said stand up. I will not speak to you while you kneel. We do not kneel here."

I struggle to my feet. Unsteady. Bound. Weak.

But standing.

She waits until I am stable.

Then speaks.

"You came north. Alone. Dying. Seeking me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"To apologize. To face consequence. To try to make you understand."

"Understand what?"

"That I was wrong. That I chose wrong. That I destroyed the only good thing I ever had."

"You did."

"I know."

"And now you want forgiveness?"

"No. I want you to know the truth. Whether it changes anything or not."

She studies me. Long. Careful. Thorough.

"The truth," she says. "Interesting. What truth exactly?"

"That I knew. That I always knew something was wrong. That I chose to ignore it because it served me. That I am a coward who hid behind the throne and called it duty."

"Yes. You are all of those things."

"I know."

"Anything else?"

I think about what else to say. What else matters.

"I am sorry. It is not enough. It will never be enough. But I am sorry."

Nyra does not respond immediately.

Just looks at me.

Then at the City. At the people watching.

Then back at me.

"Tomorrow," she says. "We talk tomorrow. Today you rest. You are still dying. Still broken. Still weak. Get treatment. Recover what you can. Then we talk."

"I can talk now."

"No. You are half-dead. Whatever you say will be compromised by desperation. I want your truth. Not your dying plea. Rest. Heal. Then speak."

She turns away.

Dismissing me.

The guards move to escort me back.

"Nyra," I call.

She pauses. Does not turn.

"Thank you. For seeing me. For giving me a chance."

"I am not giving you a chance. I am making a choice. There is a difference."

She walks away.

The City watches me standing there.

Then returns to their day.

I am escorted back to holding.

Given food. Water. Medical attention.

The healers work efficiently. Not cruel but not gentle.

Just professional.

"You will not die today," one says. "Maybe not tomorrow either. But soon. Your body is failing. Rejecting stability."

"How long?"

"Week. Maybe two. Not more."

"Can anything be done?"

"Only she can do it. And she will not."

"I know."

I lie on the cot after they leave.

Processing.

I saw her. Spoke to her. Knelt before her.

She looked at me with nothing.

No love. No hate. No care.

Just indifference.

And that is worse than anything.

Tomorrow we talk.

Tomorrow I tell her everything.

Tomorrow I face the full weight of what I did.

And accept whatever she chooses.

Life. Death. Exile. Anything.

Because she is right.

Here, my proud royal blood is worthless.

Here, I am nothing.

And that is exactly what I deserve.
