The accident part I

**Zac point of view**

Hearing every word come out of Cassy's mouth like that broke me. There's no way I expected that reaction from her, I always imagined that when she found out anything, she'd forgive me, and now I see how wrong I was. And I feel like a fool for having lost someone who helped me find myself, ever since I started sinking, Cassy had been my light ever since Mandy left me. Now I can actually see that I've lost the woman of my life, and I was feeling like a wreck, I was frustrated with myself.

I'd been home for a few hours, but staying in that room was bringing up bad thoughts, I needed to think, go somewhere else and think calmly. I grabbed my car key again and went downstairs, bumping into my mother who came out of the kitchen.

“Zac, where are you going?” she asked.

“I don't know, I just need to think for a while...” I said as I opened the door and she followed me.

“Zac, your father wants to talk to you. Please stay at home, my son.” My mother said and touched my arm. The feel of my mother's touch made me sigh and cry in front of her after many years.

“I've lost her, Mom.” I began to sob, and she pulled me into her arms, squeezing me.

“Oh, my son!” she begins ”But you wanted this, I can't defend you, let alone cover it up. What I can do is give you a hug and a mother's cuddle,” she says and I understand her ”Don't give up on Cassy, give her a break. Fight. But if you see that there's really no going back, get on with your life, don't do what you did when Amanda left you,” she says and I pull away from her.

“I know, but she hates me, I went to her and...” mom interrupts me.

“Give her a break, give yourself a break!” she repeats.

“I have to go back there, I can't give up at first.” I say looking into her eyes and she says no.

“Please don't go out again today, it's already too late,” my mother asks, and this time I'm the one who refuses.

“It's still eight in the evening, I'll be back to talk to my father,” I say to her.

“But Zac...” I interrupted her.

“Mom, I'm going to be okay,” I said and touched her face "I love you." In a strange way, I felt like I was saying goodbye to her, and my chest tightened. I took a deep breath, pushing that feeling away, and walked to my car, feeling like I was saying goodbye to her.

Cassy was going to come back to me, I was sure of it, so I decided to surprise her. I drove through the still busy streets, but I couldn't find anything I needed. I remembered the nearest neighborhood and went there, finally finding what I wanted. A beautiful pair of wedding rings, with our names engraved on them. I was going to propose, I was going to hand over the rings and I was going to ask her to marry me, Cassy was mine and I wasn't going to deny that and I wasn't going to lose her. It was all calculated in my mind, everything she wanted to hear from me, everything she needed to know to want me again, my plan would work, I was sure of it. A few minutes later, my cell phone rang. I didn't pay attention to the number calling me and answered it quickly, as I crossed the avenue back to the neighborhood where Caissy lived.

“Hello.” I said and looked up as I entered a slightly dark street.

“Z,” it took less than five seconds for me to recognize that voice ‘Oh my love, I was so worried about you, I tried to call you earlier but I couldn't.’ she said and I sighed deeply.

“Damn it Mandy, I don't want to talk to you!” I say angrily to her.

“Zac, after everything we've been through, and what we did today... I thought...” she sniffles "I love you." she says and I quickly deny it, and I speed up a little when I see that there's no car coming from the opposite direction.

“Mandy, I love Cassy and what happened today meant nothing. It just made me realize that what we had is that our story doesn't compare to mine and Cassy's, that what I feel for her really is love, she is the love of my life and not you!” I confess and the line goes silent for a few seconds, until she freaks out.

“DON'T TALK LIKE THAT, I LOVE YOU! that bitch can't get to me, you love me!” she shouts at me from the other side, I move the cell phone away from my ear a little, and then I answer her, acting the same way.

“DON'T TALK ABOUT HER LIKE THAT, AND OF COURSE SHE'S NOT YOUR EQUAL, BECAUSE SHE'S FAR SUPERIOR TO YOU.” I tried to pick it up, still looking ahead, but I couldn't find it. I looked at the intersection and the light had just gone off, so I quickly bent down and as soon as I saw the small light on the screen, I picked it up and stood up. But all I saw as soon as I looked at the road was that I was practically blinded by a bright light coming towards me, I tried to swerve but there was no time, the van crashed hard into my car, and at that moment all that came to mind was Cassy, everything I'd done to her, things she didn't even know about, and how sorry I was and I hadn't even had the chance to ask for her forgiveness either. I don't know how many turns my car took when it overturned, I just remember feeling a strong blow to my head, and unbearable pain. I tried to stay awake, but I didn't have the strength and so I blacked out.

“Zac...” I said his name as I felt a squeeze in my heart, a shiver went through me, and I felt a little sick.

“What is it, Cassy?” asked Athalia.

“I don't know, I guess... It's nothing.” I took a deep breath and tried to get it off my chest, Zac was no longer part of me, so I didn't need to worry.

Athalia shrugged and went back to what she'd said before. We chatted for a few minutes, but that damn feeling wouldn't leave my mind, or me. I was startled when the doorbell rang twice in succession, Athalia put on her slippers and quickly went to answer the door.

“Hi, is Cassy there?” the person asked, and at the same moment I recognized the voice of Zac's mother. Hadija.
