CHAPTER FIFTY-FOUR
ELENA'S POV
The quiet didn't last long. The walls shook as a loud impact reverberated from outside the meeting room as we were leaving. Stefen's eyes met mine as my heart raced.
With desperation in his voice, he declared, "They're here." "Prepare."
With a rush of adrenaline, I nodded. "I agree with you."
As we hurried outside, we noticed the pack members congregating, their faces stiff as they looked into the forest. The dark shapes of the shadows were vanishing into the darkness as they moved between the trees.
“Remain back, everyone!” Stefen yelled, his voice firm and authoritative. "We have no idea how many there are."
Leila showed up next to us, watching the shadows with narrowed eyes. Through the mind-link, she stated, "They're all around us." We must have a strategy.
Stefen's mouth clenched. They want us to become alarmed. They don't get that satisfaction from us.
A young warrior, wide-eyed and anxious, went forward. "What do we do, Alpha?"
Stefen gave him a direct look. "The line is in your hands. Keep the pack safe. Have faith in your training.
The young warrior nodded, his face changing from one of dread to one of resolve. "Yes, Alpha."
A deep growl sounded from the trees at that very moment, chilling me to the bone. Slowly and deliberately, the shadows moved closer. I could sense the suffocating, dark energy emanating from them.
Tension-filled, Leila transformed into a wolf. "We won't allow them to get any closer."
"Remain vigilant, everybody!" Stefen yelled. They're attempting to scare us. Don't show them how afraid you are.
In a whisper, I took Stefen's arm and asked, "How many do you think there are?"
His gaze remained focused on the darkness as he shook his head. Too many. But we don't back down.
The suspense was broken when one of the shadows suddenly surged forward. His eyes glowed with sinister intent, and it was one of the outlaws. With a sudden change, Stefen met the attack with ferocious accuracy.
As more rogues appeared and charged at us with lethal speed, the area descended into mayhem. The air was filled with the growls and snarls of the pack as they retaliated. Leila and Stefen battled alongside each other, their motions quick and well-coordinated.
"Remain back, Elena!" "Through the mind-link," Stefen yelled. This is something we can manage!
However, I wasn't going to watch passively. I grabbed a fallen branch and held it close to me as I stood next to the pack members, prepared to battle.
With his claws extended, one of the outlaws lunged towards me. With all my effort, I swung the branch and knocked him back. Another member of the pack jumped in and tackled him to the ground before he could recover.
"Thank you," I said, my heart pounding.
"Remain vigilant, Luna," he answered in a calm tone. "We'll keep you safe."
There were more rogues, and they attacked nonstop. With a savagery I had never witnessed before, I watched as the silver wolf tore through the attackers. However, even it was beginning to slow down as a result of the never-ending flood of rogues.
"We can't continue like this," I whispered in a desperate tone. "They simply never stop coming."
The mind-link snapped as Leila spoke. Stefen, we need reinforcements. This cannot be handled alone.
Stefen threw one of the rogues off him and growled fiercely. "They're on their way. We simply have to wait a bit longer.
Another rogue leaped at me, but Stefen was there, his claws cutting through the air before he could get to me. The outlaw stumbled back, defeated and covered in blood.
With a determined tone, he said, "Stay close, Elena." "We will not allow them to take anything away from us."
I nodded, my determination growing. "I won't be leaving."
At that moment, a howl that was louder and more forceful than any I had ever heard came from the trees. The rogues stared toward the sound, frozen in place as the battle ceased.
"What was that?" I muttered as a feeling of fear took hold of me.
Stefen's gaze grew strained. "The head. He is present.
A stranger appeared from the shadows as the outlaws dispersed. He exuded dark power and was tall and frightening. He gazed about, taking in the spectacle, his eyes gleaming.
"Alpha Stefen," he murmured in a sweet yet vile voice. "I have to admit, your pack's tenacity is impressive."
Stefen moved forward, staring intently. "Coming here was a mistake on your part."
The leader shook his head and laughed. "I don't believe so. I come to complete the task I began.
Leila stood between him and the other members of the pack and snarled. Nothing is being taken from us by you.
The leader's smile widened as his eyes came to mine. The Luna, ah. anyone disobeys fate. How charming.
I looked into his eyes and clinched my hands. "You underestimate your own strength. You don't frighten us.
"Brave words," he said in a derisive tone. But you're alone yourself. Nobody is able to resist the prophecy.
With a growl, Stefen transformed into a wolf. "We'll check on that."
The commander called forth a torrent of dark energy with a wave of his palm, and it crashed in our direction. Stefen took the brunt of the blow and flung himself in front of me before I could even respond. The power made his body tremble as he staggered back.
"Stefen!" I ran to his side and yelled.
His eyes remained fixed on the commander as he shook his head. "I'm all right. Elena, stay back.
The leader chuckled softly. "This is just the start. Nothing you do will prevent the prophecy from coming to pass.
My rage overcame my fear as I held my ground. "You have no control over our destiny."
The leader's eyes narrowed and his smile vanished. "Luna, you undervalue the force of fate. However, you'll discover soon enough.
He suddenly threw his claws out and pounced at me. I prepared myself, but the silver wolf appeared and blocked his way before he could get to me. The earth trembled as the two collided, their bodies hitting one other.
The commander held up his palm, unleashing another surge of energy that knocked Stefen back as he attempted to join the battle.
As it resisted the commander, the silver wolf snarled and its eyes glowed ferociously. However, I saw the strain in its motions. This couldn't go indefinitely.
With a desperate tone, I said, "Stefen, we need a plan."
Breathing deeply, he nodded. He must be separated from the pack. He is too powerful.
Leila transformed back into a person, resolve shining in her eyes. "I'll assemble the fighters." We'll set up a distraction.
The leader's icy, frightening voice reverberated around the clearing. It makes no difference what you do. I'll have the child.
I became enraged and took a step forward. "You must first go through each of us."
The leader's eyes were darkly amused as he laughed. "That can be set up."
A bright light burst through the darkness from the woodland before anyone could move. When I saw that replacements had come, my heart stopped, but whose side were they on?
