Chapter 51 Lucky Bastard

Chapter 51 Lucky Bastard
Julian's
POV In a way, I had lost track of time. The days seemed to drag into one single passage without signs of what was going to happen next. One moment, there was sunlight at the window, the next it was dark outside and a new circle was starting. I was so engrossed in taking care of Laura that I didn't care much about anything again. My own health— wasn't at its best but thanks to my healing factor and the daily check ups the nurses did, I was still hanging there. But as for Laura, nothing much had happened. Yet, I waited patiently for her, even if I had to spend the rest of my time by her side, I was ready to do it. The door opened, and I looked up, surprised to see James back so soon. "James? I—I didn't expect you to be back so soon." My voice cracked. Didn't I give him the errand yesterday? Or the day before yesterday—damn, I lost track of time. James furrowed his brows. "No, I was gone for a while." He was puzzled for only a moment before he snapped out of it and frowned. "I've been gone for five days, have you even slept?" I closed my eyes. They felt heavy like lead, and I knew that for him to ask me this question meant that I looked like shit. I needed rest but I wasn't going to get it while Laura was in this condition. "Did you even leave this room while I was gone?" James added. "Don't fucking worry about me," I mentioned as my eyes snapped open. "So, how did it go?" James looked conflicted that I didn't care. But he swallowed back whatever words were swimming through his mind. He knew better than to disturb me about my health. "We went back to the cabin, did some searches and tracked down that vehicle you saw," he paused and folded his hands. "The car was long gone, we couldn't find them." "Shit." I rubbed my knuckles. This was harder than I thought it would be, the search and everything. My advantage in the matter was waning slowly. "—But we found something else." James added. I looked up at him. "Really? What is that?" Like fuel in fire, my dying hope got reignited. "We found blood at the site where the Luna was. At first, we thought it was just her own dried up blood but it was different. Our tests showed that there were three different blood samples." I frowned and leaned forward. "What about it? Have you conducted tests?" "We are doing that. We haven't seen the results yet. The forensics and the lab can't generate the culprit for now because of how small it is, but we are working on it," James assured me. I closed my eyes. Finally, a step forward after everything. I held Laura's hand and rubbed them as she slept... We were so close... And I was not going to rest until we found out the truth. I turned back to James. "Alright, continue your work and update me when you find something else. Please, keep it down, I only want trusted people on this one." "Why? My men are trusted—" I cut him off. "You don't understand, control the flow of information. Keep it on a low as you do your research, I'm just telling you." James quickly nodded, not wanting to piss me off but I could see the protest in his eyes. "Okay, I will do just that. Take care of yourself, you look like you have lost five pounds," he said. I looked down at myself and my eyes narrowed. I was perfectly fine and he had no right to speak to me like that. I was raising my head to get a go at him but I was too late. He was already walking out of the door. "Lucky bastard!" I cursed under my breath before turning to the window. I moved my arms. Sure, I felt lighter. The sleep deprivation and everything that had happened was getting the better of me. If it was any other person, they would have fallen sick. But I was fine. I had my wolf to thank. My irritation finally lowered as I noticed the bright sun outside. Quickly, I lowered the shutters and returned to sit beside Laura. She slept peacefully, she looked calm even after all this. One wouldn't believe she was suffering, or dying. The signs were there, but I refused to see them. Laura couldn't die on me. The monitor beeped for a moment and stopped. It has been doing that for a while now and the doctor said it was normal. Whatever it was in her subconscious state, she was fighting it. Just like the way she has been doing in real life. Thinking about it, I felt depressed and guilty. There were a lot of things I extremely regretted now. —And I wondered, what if I was around when she wanted to have her baby? What if I actually cared? I might have been holding our child's hand now, who knew... I was so deep in my own thoughts that I failed to notice that someone had entered the room, until they called my name. I slowly turned and I saw Sarah staring at me from the door. "Julian!" She repeated. "I've been calling you for a while and you didn't answer. You scared me for a second." She stopped and moved her eyes to the bed. Her eyes narrowed when it fell on Laura. I started my apology. "Oh Sarah, I'm so sorry, I was so engrossed here that I had temporarily forgotten—" "What are you doing here?" She demanded. Her body language betrayed her calm question. She looked ready to argue with me. I didn't like this, at all. Not with Laura in this room in her condition but I also knew that if I stayed quiet, Sarah was going to lose her cool real fast. "I'm taking care of Laura. It's my fault she's like this and taking care of her is the least I can do." I turned back to Laura. Sarah folded her arms and glared at Laura. "I'm sorry to say, but you are wasting your time Julian. This woman is going to die, we both know it. Why are you wasting your time on her, when you have me?" Her words stung hard at me and I felt enraged. She had no right! I knew that I was supposed to share my time with her too but right now Laura needed me more. But this room was no place for an argument so I grabbed Sarah's arm and walked outside the room. We stopped in the lobby outside and she stood in front of me. I released her arm. "Now listen to me, Laura isn't going to die. Nobody is going to die, put that in your mind," I cautioned her. "But It's the truth!" Sarah stubbornly protested. "She's going to wake up, that's a fact!" I retorted. "And when she wakes up? How is it going to be? You will be back together? What about our child?" Sarah yelled and my heart froze. I took a step back and my mouth opened, unable to form words. "Yeah, I see you haven't thought about it!" Sarah hissed. "I and my beloved son, have become second fodder to you. You get back together with her while we are shoved to one side. That's where this is going, isn't it!" I rubbed my face. "Look, I'm sorry okay. It's true, I haven't thought about that, but I can't leave Laura like this either. She needs me if she has to live." I felt broken, even as I said those words but my intentions were clear. I wanted to save Laura. Sarah glared at me and shook her head. "As expected. This was a waste of time." She turned away and walked off. "Sarah! I'm sorry, okay—I'm sorry. Please listen to me! Sarah!" I called after her but she refused to stop. I stood there in the corridor and looked down at my feet. The tiled floors were polished to the point that I could almost see my reflection. Although not clear, I knew an exhausted Julian stared back at me. I sighed and looked at the ceiling. I felt a presence and I looked up. Mackenzie stood there with her arms folded. She was at the door and she took her time studying me. She shook her head at me. "I pity you," she scoffed. "You don't even know what you want at this point, or do you know it?" She asked. I opened my mouth to talk but nothing came out. What did I even want? Mackenzie's lips creased upwards for a broad smile before she frowned at me again. "As I expected. Let me give you a tip, your problems will end when you have an answer for that…”
