Chapter 50 Thread Carefully
Julian
Two days had passed since we started the transfusion and my body felt like a train had passed on top of it. But despite this, I spent the entire time watching over Laura. I refused to take my eyes away from her for even a minute. Doctor Twain had returned to check other patients but I remained there. The only time I got up was to use the toilet or wash my face, but even then, I made sure the door was opened so I could keep my eyes on her. My blood wasn't needed again after the first supply since she was in a coma and I had gotten paler. The only thing that prevented me from falling sick, was my own powerful healing factor and the juices that Twain gave me to drink. The times when my blood wasn't given to her, I managed to get some sleep, but it was only for a few minutes because I always woke up to watch her. "You need to get some sleep, I'm serious. I can't have you giving her bad blood. She's already in a delicate position," Twain advised me that evening. I grunted and nodded at him. I caught sight of my reflection from the glass mirror and it wasn't too good. My stubble was rough and I had black bags under my eyes. It was hard ignoring the painful headache I had. My healing factor was being put to the max here. I had to thank my wolf for that but it was for our mate. Everything was worth it when it came to Laura. And I wasn't going to stop until she got better. I grabbed a cloth and wiped Laura's forehead with it. The nurses had given up cleaning her, and I made it my own personal responsibility. Since she was in a coma, I hoped that if I tried hard enough, she would be able to hear me. So, I read her favourite book aloud. I told her about my childhood memories, laughing at the sweet scenes I still had of my sister and parents. It was painful but I had to do it more for my sake than her. Watching her like this was making me lose my mind. Why did she even go to the old cabin? Why did she leave the hospital— "Julian?" I turned sharply to the door to check who it was and I sighed when I saw Felicity. She invited herself inside and took a seat beside me. "The doctor said her treatment is going fine. She only has to wake up from the coma," she mumbled as she took Laura's hand from me. "Yeah, that's what he said..." I replied, absentmindedly as my eyes moved to the dandelions I had draped the entire room with. Felicity followed my line of sight and I felt her hand on my shoulders. "Julian, take it easy." Felicity whispered. But I smiled. "It's what she loves. I will do it for her." Felicity sighed and held me tighter. "I am not talking about the flowers," she said and my eyes turned to her in worry. "You have been at it for three days without rest. I'm sure that specialist already warned you. You don't need to do the transfusion again, right? Why don't you go back to the castle and get some premium rest? You will rob yourself dry." I understood her concern but I couldn't take it. "I am sorry Felicity but, I'm not leaving here." She sighed and dropped her hands to her waist. "Stop being stubborn. You have already done enough." I scoffed. "Done enough, eh? I haven't done anything." I got to my feet and picked up the bucket of warm water I had used to clean Laura's face with earlier. Felicity got up after me and sighed. "Why are you doing this? What are you trying to prove because it will all be useless if she woke up and you replaced her on this bed!" I gently placed down the bucket and stared at Laura. The machine beeped audibly in the background before I responded to Felicity. "I am not trying to prove anything... I only want to make it up to her." I whispered as pain clutched my voice. "Laura really loved me but I was just clouded by revenge and anger. I did a lot of bad things to her because of hate... But despite that, Laura still did everything she could..." I gently lifted the bucket again and started heading to the bathroom. But Felicity followed me to the door. "You will keep doing this, even if it means my life?" "Yes. I'm going to do everything, anything to ensure Laura wakes up healthy and strong. Whatever happens to me afterwards, doesn't matter..." Felicity was stunned by my words. She said no more and moved back to sit with Laura like a side character in a movie. I changed the water and returned just as Mackenzie bust into the room. She stood in the center and stared at her friend before her eyes slowly moved to me. "I heard what you said— I was hearing it from the door." She paused and swung her hands. "Is it true? Will you really help Laura?" She asked me. My wolf moved and I nodded. "I swear on my life. Anything for her." She wiped her tears and shook her head. "Do you love Laura?" "I do, Mackenzie." "If you really love Laura, you should vindicate her father from all the crimes he has been wrongly accused of. We can't bring back the people that died that day, but you can help her fulfil her life's mission of looking for her father's murderer." She never waited for my reply and walked up to Laura and kissed her forehead before taking Felicity outside. I sighed at Mackenzie's words. A quick glance at Laura's face and I knew she was right. It was because she had been looking for evidence, that she landed in that situation. Everything came back to me, if I had actually controlled my rage and had been a little level headed, it might not have been like that. I took a seat at the corner and thought about it. The people I had allied with, the black claw from the northern mountains that were enemies of Raphael never once talked much to me. I saw them as useful tools then, so I never really questioned them on what they want. They were very suspicious then, but I was too ignorant, because I wanted my own wants granted. I did a few backtracking in my memory. The van I had seen on the way to the forest cabin, the one whose driver's face I didn't remember. I remembered looking at the license plate as instinct and it wasn't from my pack. What more, the tyre patterns were different than the usual. It was a carore suitable for the mountains and ice. Off road, a term to rightfully call it. Too suspicious. I waited for Twain to come for his usual inspection of Laura and used that as an excuse to leave Laura's side. I sent a message to James for a meet up right outside the room. I even texted him the reason for my meetup with him. "Did you get my message?" I asked as we sat down on the waiting bench. "Yes I did. What you are asking me to do is really difficult, you don't expect me to get results that easily," James complained. Finding what happened that night was a difficult, especially when it happened almost a year ago. "Can you do it?" I asked. "I need you to help me find out what truly happened. And I want to know the truth of what happened to my sister." James fell silent and a frown played on his face. "I can, I will need some help though." "Get all the help you need. If you need more resources, don't hesitate to ask or collect." I faced him. "I give you my clearance to do it. Remember, money isn't the problem." James nodded slowly. He stared at the door. "How is she doing?" "Same." I shook my head. "Since she went into that coma, nothing has happened." James placed a hand on my shoulder. "Be strong for her." He stood up. "Hey, remember that group, the one we allied ourselves with." "The black claw?" "Yes, I have been keeping tabs on them for a while now. They have been sighted a few times in the area, the locals have been reporting and the description fits." My memory flashed to that truck I saw and frowned. "Do everything and find them. I will be waiting here." I stood up when Twain stepped out of the room. He nodded at me and left. "You be careful, thread carefully. If you get in an altercation with them, you run away. Those are trained combatants.”
