Chapter 279
"Who was it?" Haven asked the moment Lucious stepped into the room, " Is everything okay?"
"Well? Why are you looking at me like that? What's wrong?"
"Erm… actually it's nothing," He said quickly and climbed beside her. "Why aren't you asleep yet?"
"Nothing. I'll– I'll be sleeping now. You should too, you look a bit... worried?" Haven frowned. Something was definitely wrong with her mate. She felt it, but he was pretty good at pretending, and she didn't press on.
"You sleep now, goodnight," He lulled.
"Goodnight," Haven turned away and shut her eyes, pretending to sleep. She didn't want Lucious to have an inclination of what was going on. She wasn't prepared to tell him about her past; it didn't seem right.
Tomorrow, they would finally be leaving this place, and she, her past forever.
Eight thirty
Nine,
Ten,
Ten thirty,
Eleven,
Haven couldn't do it anymore. She couldn't pretend to sleep any longer. She turned a little and watched her mate sleep; his face looked peaceful when he slept. She wanted to smile at this, but her lips refused to cooperate; she gave up. Quietly, she got off the bed, slipped her feet into her flip flops, and grabbed a coat. She needed some fresh air.
Taking one last look at Lucious and making sure he was still asleep, Haven opened the door and slipped away, ensuring to lock the door as quietly as possible.
She walked even more quietly through the small corridor and arrived at a staircase. Her eyes travelled up, but her feet remained rooted to the ground. The stairs led to the Alpha's floor– her parents' former floor.
Memories of the night they were killed by those rogues suddenly made it hard to breathe. She turned and hurried away from there quickly. She couldn't dare walk down– up– that path again.
Haven's feet led her out of the pack house and down a familiar route. Everywhere was dead quiet except for the insects chirping. She didn't stop till she reached the small silver lake, which was situated at the back of the pack house.
The silver lake.. that was where her silver moon pack had gotten it's name from. But now, along with her pack, even the name was gone.
Haven stood watching the calm water absentmindedly for god knows how long when suddenly, she heard movement behind her. She spun around in alert, her eyes widening as she came face to face with her nightmare.
"Haven?" His voice called out quietly as Haven took a step back, "Wait!" Tristan hurried towards her, still holding his breath, afraid to breathe as if the woman before him would disappear if he did so. She looked surreal as she stood by the lake, and he suspected it was all part of his imagination.
It couldn't possibly be her, could it? Yes, it was probably still the effect of the alcohol.
Tristan almost believed that if she hadn't spoken the next moment.
"T— Tristan?" Her voice was barely a whisper.
Tristan's eyes widened slightly, and he finally let out a breath. His eyes skimmed over her body and returned to her face again, disbelief written all over his own face.
Right before him was the woman he was dying to be with, dressed in a simple white nightdress, the night breeze hitting her silver hair gently. Her face was pale, and her mouth was slightly open. She probably didn't expect to see him here, nor did he.
"My goodness, Haven!" Tristan moved, and before Haven realized it, she was enveloped in a hug. A small gasp escaped her lips as his arms wrapped around her.
Haven knew she shouldn't be in another man's arms. She knew she shouldn't even let him touch her, but in this moment, with her mind flooded with so many emotions and all the memories, in this place where she had spent her whole life, Haven felt herself slowly start to melt. Tears pooled up in her eyes as she stood quietly in his embrace.
"You're alive" He breathed into her ear "You're really alive" A sigh of relief escaped his lips. They stood like that for a couple of seconds till he spoke again.
"Where have you been? How could you disappear like that? Do you have any idea how much I've missed you? I searched for you like a madman, Haven!" He said all in one breath," I went crazy looking for you. I sent out men. We searched for months, yet there was no news about you. Everyone said you were gone, but I never believed."
"I was beginning to lose hope... then I saw you that night at the Moon Ball." He pulled back and cupped her face. "It was you. Wasn't it? It was you, right?
Haven nodded her head silently and watched him sigh in relief again.
" I knew it," He said, almost in a laugh," I knew I wasn't wrong. I just knew you were still alive," He let out the laugh this time around, his eyes lit up.
"You have no idea how much I missed you. I– I couldn't.. I didn't know how I even survived without you," He added quietly, his face close to hers. The faint smell of alcohol coming from his breath brought her back to her senses. She jolted away with the speed of light; her reaction pierced Tristan's heart.
"Haven?" He moved towards her, but she moved away. "I'm sorry," He stopped. "I'm sorry for everything." He repeated, "I was such an asshole. A fool!" He almost slapped himself.
"I ruined everything." His head hung low." Now I've hurt you beyond repair. I– I messed up big time. I've suffered every day and night since that day. My life was nothing short of a living nightmare. I was never able to forgive myself for what I did to you, and I never will." He looked up at her, tears dropping down his cheeks
" I know I don't deserve to say this, but please, please forgive me, Haven," He pleaded.
Haven wanted to say something– anything – to scream at him – to hit him– just anything– but her body refused to cooperate. She only stood there watching him.
"I never stopped loving you even after you left," Tristan continued, "I've only loved one woman all my life. And that woman is you, Haven. I curse myself for letting you go, but I'm going to fix everything now." His hands held hers, and his eyes bore into hers.
"I'm going to make everything right. I'll– I'll fix everything once more. All I ask for is a chance. Just one chance and you'll see how everything will go back to the way it was." He smiled.
"We'll start afresh, just me and you– just like before. What do you say?"
