Chapter 50 - Finding secrets

Baron.

I sat down at my desk when Janine left, I opened my drawers and took out a note which I had for a long time learning how to communicate with Janine when she was little when I figured out she couldn’t speak.

I had it all that time but never used it, I thought she would be independent without it.

When she spoke to me using signs, I knew what she meant.

I swallowed hard and leaned against my seat.

Janine was the daughter that I lost.

How could it be?

My Janine was declared dead when she wasn’t found after months of searching. When we adopted Janine, we didn’t know what her name was, and there was no record about her my father had suggested that we call her Janine because of the daughter that I lost.

She has been with me all this time?

Was this my punishment? That I couldn’t recognize my own daughter, I hit her and said harsh words to her.

A daughter who I loved so much.

I placed my elbow on the table. “I can’t believe it, I have to find out and call my doctor,” I muttered.

My Janine was dead, I didn’t want to believe that she was the Janine that I adopted from the orphanage at the Pack.

I took my phone from my table and called my doctor.

I informed him to run a DNA test on me and Janine, I needed to know if she was my daughter.

“...it may take a while, and I need something from Janine so I can run a test on it.”

“I will get that.” I sighed and tapped my fingers absentmindedly on the table.

“I want the result before the end of the week.” I ended the call, flipped my phone, and clasped my hands over my head.

I didn’t know what I would do if it turned out to be true that she was my daughter.

What would I say to Janine or act towards her?

I exhaled and dabbed my eyes.

Thinking about it brought back memories of my past, eleven years ago with my late mate.

It was the happiest moment of my life, and when our little girl was born.

I could remember vividly when I held her in my arms, she was so tiny and beautiful.

How could I not recognize my own daughter?

“You came home late, honey. Is something wrong?” Monica asked when I got home, she took my suitcase from my hand and my suit jacket.

“What kind of wolf was Janine when she shifted?” I inquired standing before her, she lifted her head and stared at me.

“Ben said it’s an omega wolf.” She hesitated before answering. It didn’t seem like she wanted to tell me about it.

“And why are you suddenly asking about that?”

“Janine is an omega,” I responded and shook my head.

Monica frowned at me. “What are you thinking about, Baron? What’s that worried look on your face is something wrong?” Her hand reached out to my face to touch it, I pulled her hand down and took the stairs to my bedroom without saying a word to her.

“I am talking to you, Baron!” She yelled and slammed the door behind her.

“Don’t you dare raise your voice on me ever again,” I warned with a fixed glare.

She tossed my suitcase aside and my jacket.

“You kept everything about Janine from me, how can I even believe anything you say now? How am I sure you’re not lying to me, and everything that you’ve told me about Janine isn’t a lie that you fed me with?”

“Are you doubting me?” She poked a finger on her chest and huffed.

“Do you think Janine is any good...”

“That’s enough, leave. I need to be alone.” I raised a hand to stop her from talking. I don’t want to listen to anything she has to say about Janine.

“Baron, I am your...”

“You don’t have to remind me, I’m aware of where you belong, leave.”

“What do you mean I should leave, this is our bedroom, and why are you acting this way, Baron?”

“Should I leave?” I asked coldly. I nodded when she didn’t reply, I grabbed my phone which I had dropped on the bed, and ambled out of the bedroom.

“Baron.”

“Do not come after me, I will make you regret that. I told you I need some space.” I grabbed a bottle of wine from the bar section and walked towards the guest room.

“You’re strange, Baron. What is wrong with you?”

I closed the door before she got in. She banged her fist on the door but I chose to ignore her, she would eventually get tired and leave.

I needed some time to think. I opened the bottle of wine and poured it into a glass. I opened my wallet and took out the photo that I had kept in there for a long time.

If I hadn’t gone home late that night, I would have been able to save my mate and our child.

I would have done something to keep them safe, I made a promise I couldn’t fulfill a promise that I would keep them safe.

I gulped down the glass of wine and exhaled, my finger caressed the photo of her, and her smiling face, Janine was seated on her thighs, she was just three then.

Everything else that reminded me of her was destroyed in the flame, and that has been where she died, and our daughter was never found.

She would have been disappointed in me if she found out how I have lived for the past eleven years.

I never even got the chance to apologize properly to her and resolve the misunderstanding we had concerning Monica and her child. She had found out about it, and we got into an argument. I didn’t remember being intimate with Monica but I woke up with her in a hotel room and she said she got pregnant through that encounter.

I never apologized for what I did to Pheme, the goddess that she was, and my mate.
