Seventy-Five
Laura
We arrived in Port Douglas two days after we left New York City, we would have gotten there earlier but we had to make stops because the airplane made me feel sick.
Thankfully, we got an affordable hotel to stay in till we could find an affordable place we could rent.
After two days, we rented a house and we moved in, after two weeks of getting to Port Douglas we had settled, it is a really beautiful place and almost everyone in the neighborhood was nice.
"Ethan didn't believe me when I told him I didn't know where we were going," Tracy said one afternoon while we were baking.
"I'm sorry he didn't, but I don't regret not telling you, you might let it slip," I said and she rolled her eyes.
"Yeah, that's why you took me away from North America and brought me to Australia," she said and I chuckled
"The further the better, believe me," I said and she sighed, I felt bad like I ruined her life.
"I'm sorry Tracy,"
"No don't be, we are in this together," she said and I smiled.
I yawned and I looked up to see Tracy watching me.
"What?"
"You're tired, aren't you?"
"Yeah a little," I said and she raised a brow.
"Okay, maybe not a little, my back hurts and my legs feel like I just climbed Mount Everest," I said looking at my swollen feet.
"Hold on, I'll get you a chair," she said and she left the kitchen, she came back less than two minutes later with a chair.
"Should I massage your foot," she asked as I sat down.
"No, I'll be fine," I said even though I needed that leg massage.
I watched as she filled a glass of water then she handed it to me, I was drinking it when I felt a sharp pain in my stomach making me spit the water in my mouth out.
"Are you okay?" Tracy asked taking the glass out of my hand.
"One of them kicked," I said rubbing my bump.
"Oh, must have hurt, whoever it is that kicked now, learn to kick gently don't hurt mummy," Tracy said and I felt a small kick I looked up at Tracy with my mouth opened.
"What?" Tracy asked and I smiled.
"Whoever that was, listened, there was a small kick," I said and Tracy gave me the proud-of-myself smile.
"Of course, they know their godmother's voice," she said and I nodded.
The oven gave a ding and we both looked towards it.
"The cake is ready," Tracy said and I nodded.
We brought the cake out of the oven and I must say we tried, deep down I knew it was not going to be exactly as good as Maria's even though we used her recipe, but we tried.
We left the kitchen for the sitting room while the cake cooled off and we sat on the couch but we've not searched for up to 20 minutes when someone rang the doorbell.
"I'll get the door," Tracy said standing up.
"Okay,"
She left and she came back with one of the old ladies in our neighborhood less than a minute later.
"Laura dear how are you doing?" She asked as I stood up.
"I'm doing good Mrs. Benson, how are you doing?" I asked and she smiled at me.
"Same old girl,"
"Please sit," I said gesturing towards the couch and she did, I sat down too and Tracy took her seat beside me.
"I was wondering how my favorite girls are doing," Mrs. Benson said and I looked at Tracy.
"We are doing fine," Tracy said and I nodded.
"Please get her cake and lemonade," I whispered into Tracy's ear and she nodded.
She excused herself and she went into the kitchen, she came back a few minutes later with a slice of cake and a glass of lemonade on a tray, she set it on the stool and smiled at Mrs. Benson.
"Oh darling, you didn't have to bother," she said but she ate up the cake and drank the lemonade anyway, I knew it was rude but we watched her while she did all that.
"I've not tasted such good cake in a long while, thank you very much,"
"You are welcome,"
"The bake sale is coming soon, I hope you make this because you'll definitely make huge sales," she said and I smiled feeling very proud that we did a good job, the chocolate cake might not be as good as Maria's but it was good enough for Mrs. Benson to give a compliment, compliment were not things Mrs. Benson really gave, we knew that even though we arrived two weeks ago.
"Thank you, Mrs. Benson, it is our aunt's recipe, we are glad you enjoyed it," I said and she nodded.
"Well, I came here to ask you about something,"
"Oh, okay, privately or..."
"No, she can stay, it is not something serious," she said and I nodded.
"You know it's been two weeks since you guys got here and I've been wondering why... You know... Why I've not seen your husband, I mean almost everyone in the neighborhood is wondering," she said and I looked at Tracy who also looked at me, I looked back at Mrs. Benson and I cleared my throat.
"My husband is fine, he is just really busy with things at the moment," I said and she sighed.
"You don't know how relieved I am, people were starting to talk, some said you are not married, some said you were jilted, some even said you are divorced, I'm really glad," she said and I gave her a small smile.
She left a few minutes later and Tracy held my hand.
"What?" I asked and she sighed.
"I know you, Laura, the question Mrs. Benson asked was not an easy one to answer," she said and I smiled at her.
"She's just looking out for us, I'll be fine," I said and Tracy rolled her eyes.
"I like Mrs. Benson but we both know she probably started the talk," Tracy said and I shrugged.
"I'm sure she meant well," I said and she nodded releasing my hand.
"Once again the plan is not perfect," I said and she looked at me confused.
"What do you mean?"
"Mrs. Benson just reminded me that I forgot to divorce him," I said and she shook her head.
"Don't think about it and don't think about what Mrs. Benson said, people make it seem like ladies can't survive without their husband, that's a big lie, we would get through this together and we will live a happy life, they would forget about the whole husband thing in no time," she said and I smiled.
"You are right, they would forget about it and we will be enjoying ourselves, we will also be making money,"
"Speaking about making money, you were going to tell me about your idea,"
"Yeah, I wrote it in the safety handbook, and I..." I was going to say I had it all planned out but something struck me.
"Are you okay? Did the babies kick?" She asked with a concerned look on her face.
"I left the safety handbook in New York and it has everything written in it, I mean everything,"
