Chapter 201 More than a fucking year - Monet
My feet pound on the pavement, sweat dripping in my eyes as I run back to an empty apartment.
Amy and Luke are staying with me, roommates I never asked for, but that I appreciate.
They're in Indianapolis now, though, for the combine, and I decided to stay back, saying I had to study but in honesty I'm way ahead of my workload.
What else is there for me to do besides study and sometimes hang out with my friends who are both in relationships now?
I'm so happy for Chrystal, she deserves all the happiness after James, who is exactly where he belongs. In prison, sentenced to sixty-five years with no chance of parole. The public still doesn't know that Chrystal and I are the victims, and I don't know if I want it made public especially since Cole was in the headlines last year.
Antoine is the best thing that happened to her, and for some reason people have a lot to say because they're together, but they don't know what that girl went through. Maybe one day she will be ready to tell the world her truth.
I miss Cole so much, my heart aching every single day. I've read all of his letters, declarations of how much he loves me. I've read those letters a dozen of times, over and over, the papers wrinkled and stained with my tears.
If he loves me so much the way that he claims, why leave me?
He said he wants to become a better man for me, but I already thought he was the best, damaged and all.
I'll take Cole just as he is in every lifetime.
The silence in the apartment feels suffocating, but only a few more days and they will be back. Luke did so good in the combine, and I'm so proud of him. In a perfect world, him and Cole would have declared for the draft together, and went to the combine together just like they started.
I'm still in the shower when my phone rings, but I don't make an effort to go and answer it, thinking of that day I showerd with Cole after he came back from visiting the prison. Things just went downhill from then.
The phone keeps on ringing though, as if it's an emergency, so I shut the water off, and quickly dry off, wrapping the towel around my hair before answering.
"Where the hell are you!" Amy shouts in my ear.
"Is something wrong?" I frown. "I was in the shower."
"Are you not watching the combine!" She says in disbelief. "Girl, go switch on the TV. Now!"
I quickly tie another towel around my body, and rush to the living room. The channel is already on the combine broadcasting from when I was watching Luke the day before.
Everything in me stills, I think my heart skips a few beats, as the boy who looks much more than a man now, is on my screen.
"He's here!" Amy sounds like she's going to jump out of her skin. "He fucking declared, Monet!"
The whole year without him felt like my soul was out of my body. He missed my birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and the whole damn football season. Of course we lost in the first round of the playoffs, the fucking defending champions, because Cole left us high and dry, and now he is on my screen looking like all my dreams come true.
His hair is shorter on the sides and longer on top, his face turned down as someone is talking to him.
Wait.
Does he have a tattoo?
I can't make the details out on screen, but he has a tattoo that starts at his wrist and travels all the way up his arm. It looks like roses, vines and thorns. And it makes him look even hotter, the motherfucker!
"What a surprise!" The commentator says. "After missing the whole season, Cole Smith is here, and he is looking very good! What is he going to show us today and tomorrow!"
"I'm on my way." I tell Amy. "I'm going to get dressed and try to get a flight today."
"Yes, bitch!" She sounds like she's gonna go insane. "Come get your man!"
I don't even pack any clothes. I make sure all the essential documents are in my bag, my credit card, and my charger, the urgency to get to Indianapolis in the front of my mind. I can get something to wear from Amy. I grab my car keys, and look at my car that I still haven't had the heart to drive, but the airport is an hour away, and I don't want to waste any time.
So I get in, Mom's voice in my head that I should be brave, and the words that she wrote in that letter she left me, speaking to me.
Luke always makes sure the car is good, and I wish I could kiss him as I drive to the airport, no longer scared that something bad might happen to me.
I will die when it is my time, but I might die if I don't see him for myself, to know that he is okay. I need to feel him with my own two hands.
I book the first flight I can, and I take the hour and a half that I have to wait and buy some underwear at least.
Sexy ones.
Just in case.
Like Amy said, I'm going to get my man.
