Chapter 65: Nana Chen's Christmas Dinner
Alex laid on her bed tossing and turning while she grumbled to herself.
She had been restless since after the group call which was unusual since she always had her emotions under control.
Would she and Varney really be able to pull off a relationship in front of Nana?
It would have been easier with a different audience but their first trial had to be in front of Nana Chen.
And thanks to Fab, she was all bothered now. She decided to send Varney a message.
Alex: “Hey what's up”
Varney: ”Is that how you greet your boyfriend on Christmas day?”
Alex: rolling eyes emoji “I need to ask you something”
Varney: “Okay babes what's up?”
Alex: “What are you wearing tonight?”
Varney: smirk emoji “what do you want me to wear?”
Alex: “Wear something casual. No need dressing like you are coming for a business meeting.”
Varney: “Why do I feel like you are worried about tonight's dinner?”
Alex: “Well I am. And it's all thanks to that idiot Fab. He got me all worked up”
Varney: “Relax Alex! It's just dinner with your grandma. Just follow my lead and you will be fine.”

Varney: “Oh before I forget. Think of what you are going to call me during dinner, you can't call me Varney ”
Alex: twirly face emoji
Alex dropped her phone with a tud on the bed. This night was going to be a long night.
The atmosphere permeated with the aroma of Nana Chen's cooking.
She had decided to make fried rice, pepper turkey, turkey salad, her signature blueberry pie and a chocolate cake.
Prof Chen had tried to silently move a piece of fried turkey when Nana Chen wasn't looking.
He had almost succeeded when he suddenly felt a pull on his ear.
She had let him take the piece of turkey. She waited till he was about to put it in his mouth before making a move on him.
With one hand, she grabbed his left ear, and with the other hand she held the hand that held her turkey.
“Ouw ouw ouw!
Mum let go of my ear.
I thought you were in the restroom” Chen winced in pain.
“Oh I was, but I sensed a rat going to my pan so I came to check it out” Nana Chen said adding a bit more force on the hand holding the turkey.
“Ouw mum let go okay? You can have your turkey back. Just please let go.” Chen begged and let the turkey in his hand go.
After he had dropped the turkey, Nana Chen began to smack him for coming to her pan.
“How dare you touch the turkey I made for my in-laws?” she smacked.
“You couldn't even catch the turkey and now you dare to touch it” she smacked him again.
“Mum careful not to hit the face. I still have to go pick your daughter-in-law from the airport.” Chen said trying to protect his face.
“Oh that's true.” Nana Chen said pausing with her assault.
Chen used that opportunity to escape.
Nana Chen then called the twins and gave them a piece of turkey each.
“Hey that's not fair” Chen said feeling offended
“They worked, you didn't. That's fair in my books” Nana Chen said dismissively.
Chen went upstairs to check on Alex. He knocked on her door and entered
“You tried taking Nana's turkey right?” Alex asked with a smirk.
“How did you know?” Chen asked rubbing his ear.
“Your ear is red and it looks like it has been pulled.” she said pointing to his ear.
“Gosh your Nana almost pulled off the whole ear from my head.” he said still wincing.
“How did you survive growing up?”
“Hmmm!” was all he said.
“Anyways I wanted to ask if you would like to join me to pick Rosalie up from the airport.
I was thinking you would want to meet her alone first before I introduce her to the family.”
“That's smart. We wouldn't want to introduce her to all our craziness at once.” Alex said getting up to grab her purse.
They both left for the airport and got there in time to see the plane land.
After about 10 minutes, Alex sighted a a beautiful brunette walking towards them.
Her dad's broad smile made her realize she's was the one.
The lady hadn't initially seen them, when she did, she broke into a light run and immediately jumped into Chen's arms.
She kissed him, not caring who was watching.
Alex had to clear her throat because the couple beside her didn't look like they were going to stop kissing.
Finally aware that they had company, Shirley got off Chen and adjusted her clothes.
“I'm so sorry I got carried away. You must be Alex” Rosalie said smiling awkwardly.
“I've really missed Cheny and he was the only person in my eyes.
Hi my name is Rosalie and I've been dying to meet you Alex.” Rosalie said giving Alex a hug.
After she broke the hug, Alex turned to her dad. “Cheny?” she said trying to muffle her laughter.
“Oh I like her. She's definitely a keeper. So much for trying to slowly introduce her to our crazy.
She would fit in just fine.” Alex said turning to hold Rosalie’s hands and leading her towards the car.
“Cheny get the bags would you?” Alex said to her dad trying to hold in her laughter.
Chen felt a headache coming on as he saw his girlfriend and daughter walk hand-in-hand.
He was initially scared of how Alex would feel if he started dating again.
Now his worry was Rosalie and Alex teaming up. Throw in Nana Chen and he was dead meat for sure.
He had known Rosalie for two years. They had met at a research convention.
She looked a little similar to his dead wife and was immediately pulled in.
After interacting with her, he noticed they were completely different people.
Rosalie’s personality was bubbly, while his wife had been reserved. Still he found himself being drawn to her.
He stayed friends with her because he didn't want Alex to feel like he was replacing her mother.
Then four months ago she got tired of being “Just friends with him” and asked either he be her boyfriend or she walks away.
And he accepted. Planing to deal with how to introduce her to his family later.
Now he realized he had been worried over nothing.
They arrived home to voices in the living room.
Fab, Golden, and Varney had arrived and they were in the living room being entertained by Nana Chen.
The minute the trio entered, the people in the living room turned towards them and as if on cue, they started chuckling.
“Hey honey” Varney stood up and went to hug Alex, pecking her on the cheek while everyone watched.
“I will take Rosalie to freshen up. We would be down in ten minutes.” Alex said as she led Rosalie up the stairs.
“I'll come with you,” Golden said and quickly joined them.
