Chapter 64 Turkey on the run
Chapter 64: Turkey-On-The-Run
Christmas morning in the Chen's household was loud and chaotic..
Nana Chen had insisted on buying a live turkey instead of a frozen one.
She said if they were going to have turkey, then they must do it right.
Her idea of doing it right was to buy a live turkey and kill it on the morning of Christmas.
Now their Christmas turkey was on the run in the backyard trampling on Nana's flowers.
“Chen what are you doing? Catch that turkey before it ruins all my flowers” Nana yelled from where she sat.
“Mum we wouldn't be chasing a turkey if you had just listened and gotten a frozen turkey from the store like everyone else.” Chen replied thinking of how to catch the turkey.
“There is no way I am serving our guests frozen turkey. What would they think of me?” Nana said as if her son had suggested something preposterous.
“Nana trust me no one will know or even care.” Alex said standing to the side and watching the drama.
“Instead of standing there, why not assist you Dad in catching the turkey.
I am not serving my daughter-in-law and future grandson-in-law a store-bought turkey.” Nana said with finality.
“Xiner, Jingli. You two grab sticks and chase the turkey towards me.
Your big cousin and Uncle are useless. They can't even catch a turkey ” Nana said rolling her eyes.
Alex and her dad watched the twins grab sticks and began chasing the turkey.
The twins were five years old. Chasing the turkey came natural to them because they were born and raised on a ranch.
They watched as Nana Chen stood waiting by the side with a big basket.
The moment the turkey got close to her, she immediately placed the huge basket over its head, trapping it.
And with the skill of trained butcher, she removed the basket, stepped on the wings of the turkey and tied it's leg.
She immediately took it to the tap and slaughtered it.
The whole process didn't even take up to 10 minutes, and Prof Chen had been trying to catch the turkey for almost 30 minutes.
Yet he was bested by two five years olds.
“Mum you knew you could catch the turkey, why did you ask me to do it then?” Prof Chen asked
“The chase is also a part of tradition. Besides it's for your guest so it's only fair you pitch in.
Trust me, the turkey would taste even better.
Now you two go away, so I can start cooking for my guests.” Nana said trying to shoo them away.
“Mum it's just 11 am, dinner isn't until 8 pm.”
“The more reason I have to start now. Just ask Alexa to play me my song so I can start cooking.
That girl never understands what I say”
Soon the house was filled with a Chinese melody playing softly from the speakers.
Alex had just taken a bath and was relaxing in her room.
She had decided to change her nail polish and was in the middle of that when a group call invite came in.
“Hey guys what's up. Merry Christmas.” Alex said gently blowing on her nails.
“Merry Christmas” Fab and Gigi said together.
“I'm officially the best Uncle in the world.
Who knows, I might even get to walk my nieces down the aisle on their wedding day” Fab said proudly.
“What are you on about?” Alex said a bit distracted with her nails.
“My nieces absolutely loved their Christmas gifts. They said I was the best and went about calling their friends to show off.” Fab said proudly.
“Good job Gigi. What did you get them that earned Fab a place on the best Uncle list?” Alex asked turning to face Gigi.
“Nothing serious. Just something to match each girls taste.” Gigi said
“So what's the plan for dinner?” Gigi asked a little excited.
Alex told her friends about the whole turkey drama that had happened and they laughed so hard.
“That explains the song in the background.” Fab said trying to catch his breathe.
“God I love your Nana. I am looking forward to dinner more now.
It seems like we would be having turkey-on-the-run on dinner menu. I can't wait to taste it.” Fab laughed.
“Speaking of dinner, have you spoken to your “boyfriend”?
You guys need to put up a convincing performance. And I'm so looking forward to it.
Turkey-on-the-run,
Alex + Varney's fake relationship,
Prof Chen + Secret Girlfriend,
This dinner has everything. And I'm so looking forward to it.” Fab said excitedly.
Golden couldn't help it. She laughed softly at Fab's analogies. She too was looking forward to the dinner.
She was eager to see Alex and Varney act cute.
Varney was always teasing Alex. And she always looked like she was going to obliterate him the next minute.
Alex had told her she wasn't allowed to matchmake. But the universe did have a twisted sense of humor.
Now, they had to play the perfect couple in front of Nana Chen or Alex might be married off to a random stranger.
“Nerd? Shut up!” Alex said. “You and Gigi are also a fake couple remember?”
“Oh but we are fine. We are friends and we get along pretty well.
It's a piece of cake faking we are in love.
But you and Varney? Now that's a whole new story.
You literally can't stand the guy. In fact you can't stand anyone that's why I think you are gay.
It's going to be interesting watching you get along with him tonight. Your performance tonight will convince me if you are indeed straight.
Trust me, I will know if you are faking it. Plus Nana Chen isn't easy to fool too.
So my dear bestie, you have a lot of work to do.” Fab concluded
“Gosh Fabulous! Just listening to you talk gives me a headache.” Alex said shaking her head.
“Anyways, what's the dress code for tonight?” Golden asked trying to diffuse the tension.
“I don't know. Wear something simple and nice. It's not like we are going for a formal event.
It's just dinner with my Nana.” Alex responded casually.
Alex heard her Nana call from downstairs.
“I have to go guys. See you by 8 pm and don't be late.” She then hung up the call.
