Chapter 13

An hour later, Rebecca came out of her room. She walked out to the sitting area and up behind the chair Larry was sitting on. She bent over the back of the chair moving her hands along his chest. "What are you looking at?"

"Researching more properties."

"So, you're working?" She asked as she roamed her hands across his chest.

"This is what I do when there's nothing to do. How are you doing?"

Rebecca walked around to the other chair and sat down. "I'll do what I have to do to put that guy in jail, but I don't want to see anymore right now. I don't want to remember any more."

"Brian was going to talk to the chief to see what we should do."

"I'll give a statement or whatever. I'm just tired of thinking about it."

"What would you like to do?"

"I don't know. I don't want the chance of running into the detective. I guess I'll just hide out here."

"We can go home if you want. All I have to do is call the pilot and, in an hour, we can be in the air."

"Don't we have to wait and see what the chief and Brian wants us to do?"

"You come before them. If you want to go, then we can."

"We can wait to see what the chief says."

"But I am sure we could find something to do."

"He probably has cop friends all around that would tell him."

"You can't hide forever."

"Just until he's in custody." Rebecca got up and walked over to the window. She looked out. "I feel like a prisoner. He should be the one behind the glass. Not me."

Larry put his laptop on the table and stood up. He walked up behind Rebecca and put his arms around her. "I know it's not right for him to be walking around and you feeling scared to leave, but we have to do this carefully."

Rebecca turned around and wrapped her arms around him. "The only time I feel safe is when I am in your arms."

"Then you can stay in them," Larry said. "I thought about this last night, I know we haven't known each other for very long but I was wondering if you would move in with me."

"I don't know, Larry. It is pretty sudden."

"I know. How about this then? I can let you have a room at the hotel until you get back on your feet."

"What about my family?"

"You can visit any time you want and I am going to look into the cannery deal and see what went wrong," Larry said. "I don't think you'll ever feel safe at your apartment."

"You're right. I can make a fresh start."

"Yes you can. I can arrange all your stuff from here to be packed up and brought there."

"All right." Rebecca said then looked at him. "Do I have to decide right now which place I want to stay?"

"No. It will take some time for the arrangements to be made."

"All right." Rebecca moved her head closer and kissed Larry's lips. "I will move with you."

"Great," he said. He kissed her. Rebecca deepened the kiss. They kissed for a few moments then separated.

"I realize that I like you better wearing jeans then wearing your suit. You look good in both of them, but you are more relaxed in jeans."

"I wish I could wear jeans to work, but it's not very professional looking."

"Maybe not but you can look good in jeans."

"That's one reason why I work a lot from home. I can wear what I want."

"That's a good reason."

"If you could do one thing right now, what would it be?"

"Besides my memory coming back and that slime in jail I don't know. I don't know what kind of person I am. Am I adventurous or a couch potato. From what my parents said. I stand up to causes I believe in."

"That's good in some ways," Larry said. "In my business, I try to keep jobs and get more jobs. There are usually some activists that don't like what we're doing."

"So, did you find anything about the cannery?"

"I found out what it was like before it was sold. I'm not sure what the deal was. That has to wait until I get home."

"Are you planning on buying it?"

"I can't buy it by myself. I wouldn't know how to run a cannery. That's when the company comes in," Larry said. "I would have to find someone to run it, the investors to put up the money and people to work it."

"Oh. Is that going to be your next project?"

"I don't know. I have other ideas too."

"Like what?"

"Like a beach front resort. There's one down in Florida I've had my eye on for a while."

"So, when we get back, you have to go back to work?"

"Yes. That's what I do."

"I thought you were going to take some time off."

"I would, but I want to see your case through. I promise, when this is all over, we will go on a vacation. Wherever you want to go." Larry said as he put his arm around her. "Unless my work tears us apart because I get wrapped up in it and forget about everything."

"Really? Is that what happened before with your relationships?"

"Yes."

"Well, I don't think I would let you forget everything." Rebecca said then turned and sat on his lap. "I'll just distract you from your work."

"You have a way of doing that." Larry said then kissed her. His phone rang. He pulled back. "Just like that distracts me." He said as he reached forward and picked it up off the table. "It's Brian." He said then answered it. "Hey, Brian," he said. "No, we're not busy."

"Not yet, Brian." Rebecca said towards the phone.

Larry smiled. "Yeah, what's up?" He listened. Rebecca tried to listen. "All right. I'll make the call. Yes, that's not a problem. Bye." Larry pressed the button ending the call. "The chief wants us to come home so you can make a formal statement."

"I guess I can't get away from it."

"The sooner we start, the sooner it will be over."

"I know." Rebecca got up. "I'll go pack." She said as she walked towards the bedroom.

Larry made the phone call to the pilot then got up and walked back to the bedroom.

An hour later, Rebecca and Larry boarded the plane. Rebecca sat in a seat and fastened her seatbelt. She stared out the window. Larry talked to Brian a while in the front of the plane then came back and sat down next to her. He took her hand in his. "The chief is going to meet us at the airport then we'll meet with the DA to see what to do next."

"Whatever we need to do." Rebecca said without looking at Larry.

"Do you want to back out?"

"No." Rebecca said as she looked at him. "I don't want to back out."

Jordan and Brian boarded the plane and closed the door. "Mr. Newman, there's a weather system on the way. We have been advised to go around the system. The flight will be longer than expected."

"That's fine, Jordan."

"I'll let the chief know." Brian said then followed Jordan to the front of the plane.

"I'm just nervous about telling complete strangers the whole story."

"I know, but I will be right there and you can stop any time you want."

"I just want it over with."

"I know," Larry said. He moved his head closer and kissed Rebecca. She pulled back and stared back out the window. Larry continued to hold her hand.

Once the seatbelt sign went off, Larry got up and poured himself a drink. "Do you want one?"

"Sure I guess one drink won't hurt."

"It will take the edge off." Larry said as he poured another drink. He took them over and sat down. "I have a drink every time I fly. It takes the edge off the nerves."

"You own a jet, but you're nervous about flying. That really doesn't make sense."

"It gets me places faster and I hate the crowds at the airport," Larry said.

"I guess that makes sense in a weird way." Rebecca said then looked out the window. She took a sip of her drink. Larry got up and walked back to the couch. He sat down and picked up a magazine from the rack. He looked through it. After a while, Rebecca got up and walked back to him. Larry looked up at her. "Do you want to sit down?"

"Can Brian or Jordan come back here?"

"They could, but they won't."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes. I asked Brian to stay up there," Larry said. "Why do you ask?"

"Because I don't want to think about where we are going. There is only one way I know how not to think about it." Rebecca said as she took off her shirt.
