Chapter 14
The plane landed at the airport Rebecca went into the bathroom to freshen up. Larry was sitting on the chair tying his shoes when Brian came back. "Hey boss. How was the flight?"
"It was enjoyable."
"I'm sure it was." Brian smiled.
Larry smiled back. "Is the chief here?"
"Yes."
"Tell him we'll be out in a couple of minutes."
"All right." Brian said then exited the plane. Jordan followed him.
Larry finished with his shoes then went to the bathroom door. "Rebecca, are you all right?"
"Yes. I'm just finishing up." She said then opened the door. "How do I look?"
"You look beautiful. You have a glow to you like you are happy."
Rebecca came out of the bathroom and put her arms around his neck. "I am happy when I am with you." She said then kissed him. "Are you going to freshen up?"
"Yes, I need to wash up," he said. Rebecca moved over and Larry went into the bathroom.
Larry and Rebecca walked out of the plane a few minutes later holding hands. They walked over to the cars and people waiting "Hello Chief Reuben," Larry said.
"Sorry to interrupt your weekend off, but I thought we should get the process started."
"The sooner we get this over with, the better," Rebecca said.
"The district attorney, your lawyer, Officer Bearman and Detective Stewart are waiting at the precinct."
"All right. Let's get going."
"You can ride with me and then I will drive you home."
"That will be great," Larry said. They walked over to the SUV where Brian and Jordan had loaded the luggage. Larry opened the door for Rebecca and they got in the back seat. Brian climbed in the front seat. The chief pulled out.
The chief pulled up at the hotel around 4:30. Joe got the bags and they walked inside.
Shelly came over to them. "Mr. Newman, we need you in the office."
"Can it wait?"
"It shouldn't sir. It's important."
"It's all right, Larry. I'm fine. I'll wait for you at the bar."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes I think I need a drink anyway."
"All right. I'll be there as soon as I can," Larry said. Rebecca walked off towards the bar. "Have someone keep an eye on her, please." Larry walked back to the office.
Larry walked over to the bar about an hour and a half later. He sat down on the stool next to Rebecca. "How are you doing?"
"Just great. I had a burger already. I was hungry, sorry."
"That's all right. It's good that you ate."
"Did you get all your work done?"
"Yes. Everything is squared away for now."
"That's good."
"Yes, it is."
"I'm thinking about writing a book about everything that has happened to me."
"That's a wonderful idea."
"I thought it would keep me busy until my memory fully returns and the trial is over."
"Like the DA said, unless he either confesses or evidence is found it might not go to trial."
"I can hope anyway."
"We will keep our fingers crossed."
"I guess," Rebecca said. "Do you have a camera I can use? I had a lot of pictures around my apartment that I took."
"No, but I can buy you one."
"You don't have to do that," Rebecca said.
"Maybe if my car is found, I would have one in there."
"It's possible, but I doubt it."
"I know. I hate for you to give me such an expensive present after you have done so much for me already."
"I don't mind at all. You have so much for me too."
"What are you talking about?" Rebecca asked. "I haven't bought you anything."
"You gave my life meaning. You have given me the joy of living. You gave me a reason not to work so much," Larry said. "You gave me more than money can buy."
Rebecca looked at him. "It's not the same. What if this doesn't work out? What if when my brain heals completely, I turn into someone you don't like."
"I don't think that possible, but if we don't work out, then I will know that there is more in the world then work."
"I'm glad I could do that for you."
"So am I," Larry said. They sat there a while having a drink before they went upstairs. "Do you want to watch some television?"
"No, thanks. I think I am going to go to bed early. I'm wiped out."
"I'm here if you need anything."
"Thanks." Rebecca said then walked off to her room.
Rebecca knocked at Larry's bedroom door around 2 AM. She walked in when she heard Larry call back to her. "Can I sleep in here with you?"
"Of course. Come on in." Larry said sleepily.
Rebecca walked over and got in Larry's bed. "I'm sorry to wake you. I couldn't sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I would see him."
Larry wrapped his arms around her. "No apologies needed, sweetheart. Try to get some sleep."
"Thank you," Rebecca said.
Rebecca woke up alone in the bed seeing the sun coming through the curtains. She got out of bed and walked out of the bedroom. She went over to her room and got dressed. She walked out to the living room and smelled coffee. She walked to the kitchen and poured herself a cup. She walked through the room to Larry's office and stopped in the doorway. She watched him at his desk. She leaned against the doorframe.
Larry looked up from his computer. "Good morning sunshine."
"Morning."
"How are you feeling?"
"My head hurts a little, but I'll live," Rebecca said. "Are you working?"
"I'm looking into the cannery deal."
"You don't have to do that to impress my father."
"I try to make more jobs or at least keep the existing ones. I hate that jobs were lost because of a deal."
"It was your father's deal, not yours."
"Yes and it will piss him off if I take it over."
"But that was a long time ago," Rebecca said.
"Yes it was and if I can change it, I will. Not just for your family, but for the whole town," Larry said. "The town has really gone downhill over the last several years."
"Do you really think you could save it?"
"I can try."
"All right," Rebecca said. She walked away.
Larry walked into the kitchen an hour later. He poured him another cup of coffee then walked back to Rebecca's room. He knocked on the doorframe of her open door. "Can I come in?"
"Of course," Rebecca said.
Larry walked in. "I thought about doing some shopping. Do you want to come along?"
"Sure," Rebecca said. "What are you shopping for?"
"I want some new shoes and maybe some clothes," Larry said. "I just want to get out mostly."
"All right," Rebecca said. "Give me a few minutes."
"I'll wait for you in the living room." Larry said then walked out.
