Chapter 476 Stayed All Night at the Gate of The Johnson Manor

Charles laughed even harder. "Really? What about Sophia? Mr. Smith, if I kidnapped both Emily and Sophia, and you could only save one, who would it be?"

"Charles, you're asking for it!" James, furious, swung his fist at Charles' face.

Charles' mouth bled again, but he continued to laugh. "James, you really need to think about this. Who's more important to you, Emily or Sophia? I guarantee, whichever you choose, it'll tear you apart."

Charles walked away, still laughing.

James watched him leave, his expression growing darker.

To him, who was more important, Emily or Sophia?

James didn't want to think about it, didn't want to choose between them.

But the question brought back a memory from when Emily had just moved into their house after their wedding.

Back then, Sophia had provoked Emily in the study, even leading her to the window.

When he reached the study door, he saw Sophia almost falling out the window.

Without thinking, he rushed to save Sophia, accidentally pushing Emily out of the second-floor window.

At that moment, he chose Sophia.

If he had to choose again now...

James closed his eyes. The person who came to mind was Emily.

He had chosen Sophia because she was the one about to fall, while Emily was safely inside. So, he had instinctively chosen Sophia.

But if both Emily and Sophia were in danger...

James sighed.

His choice would be Emily.

James' phone rang. It was a message from Sophia, reminding him to rest early and to attend the gala on the yacht tomorrow night.

He turned off his phone, feeling inexplicably irritated.

At that moment, Emily's words echoed in his mind.

Though Emily hadn't finished her sentence, he understood what she was hinting at.

Why had she brought up the earthquake from five years ago? What was she trying to tell him?

Did she leave because she had no choice?

Or was it that she was the one who saved him during the earthquake?

These thoughts raced through James' mind.

But he quickly suppressed them.

How could it be?

How could Emily have been the one who saved him during the earthquake?

If it was really her, why hadn't she said anything in the past five years?

Despite his thoughts, James drove to the Johnson Manor and called Emily.

Emily had just finished her shower and, hearing her phone ring, walked over to check.

Seeing it was James, she hung up.

James patiently called again.

Emily sighed and answered, "Mr. Smith, it's late. What do you want? Did you mean to call someone else and dialed my number by mistake?"

"I didn't call the wrong number." James' voice was cold. "Emily, what were you trying to tell me tonight? What happened during the earthquake five years ago? What did you do?"

Did you save me?

He didn't say the last part out loud.

Emily chuckled. "Nothing, just a random thought."

"You're lying." James declared. "Emily, I'm right outside your house. Come out, let's talk face to face."

Outside her house?

Emily frowned, walked to the window, and peeked through the curtain. Sure enough, she saw James' car.

"Sorry, Mr. Smith, I'm about to go to bed. I don't have time for this nonsense," Emily refused and then she hung up.

Emily had wanted to tell him the truth earlier, but Charles' interruption brought her back to her senses.

Their relationship was finally over. Why bring up the past?

James didn't need to know.

If he didn't know, they could remain strangers. If he found out, he'd just cling to her again.

Her hard-won peace would be shattered. It wasn't worth it.

James called again, but Emily turned off her phone.

She tossed her phone aside and went to bed. Even if James was outside, she had nothing to fear.

They were legally separated. If James tried to force his way in, the Johnson family would throw him out.

James didn't force his way in.

He just sat in his car, outside the Johnson Manor, all night.

At dawn, when he saw people moving inside, he finally drove away.
