Chapter 475 The Earthquake Five Years Ago
Emily clenched her fists tightly. "James, do you even know..."
"What?" James stared at her, waiting for her to continue. When she didn't, he pressed, "What do you want to tell me?"
Emily could see the eagerness in his eyes. He really wanted to know what she was about to say. This was the perfect moment. They were already divorced, legally separated. Even if he changed his attitude after hearing what she had to say, as long as she didn't relent, there was nothing James could do to her.
If she didn't say it now, saying it later might seem like she was trying to blackmail him. Tonight, she wasn't trying to blackmail him; she just felt indignant.
Five years ago, when she risked her life to save him, it was out of her own free will. During the past five years of marriage, despite all the cold shoulders she received from him, she never felt she should use the life-saving favor to demand anything from James. Even during the divorce, she didn't think that way.
But at that very moment, just a second ago, seeing his nonchalant attitude, Emily felt a surge of indignation. How could he be like this? She had saved him and given him her heart. Even if they ended up divorced, he shouldn't treat her this way.
"Emily, if you're really hiding something from me, I hope you can be clear about it," James said again, seeing her remain silent.
Emily curled her lips. "Alright, since you want me to say it, I'll just say it."
She took a deep breath. "Five years ago, during the earthquake..."
Just as she was about to speak, a nonchalant voice interrupted, "Mr. Smith, Ms. Johnson, what a coincidence. Didn't expect to run into you two so late."
Emily and James turned towards the voice and saw Charles walking over with his hands in his pockets.
James' face darkened. "What are you doing here?"
Was Charles deliberately following Emily?
Charles casually walked up to James and Emily, his gaze briefly landing on James before he smiled at Emily. "After dinner at home, I suddenly wanted to see Ms. Johnson. I didn't want to intrude by visiting her house, so I decided to take a walk and see if I could run into her. It seems like fate, I actually did."
Charles asked with concern, "Ms. Johnson, why are you still out so late? A beautiful woman like you shouldn't be out alone; you never know when some ill-intentioned man might appear. It's too dangerous."
James, who automatically identified as the "ill-intentioned man," looked even more displeased. His gaze shifted between Emily and Charles. Hadn't he warned Emily to stay away from Charles? What was going on now? Why did it seem like Emily and Charles were closer than before?
Ignoring James, Emily smiled and answered Charles' question. "Thank you for your concern, Mr. Green. I was just about to head home."
"Ms. Johnson, let me walk you home," Charles immediately offered.
James squeezed in with a sour expression. "I'll take you home."
"No need," Emily instinctively refused. "Mr. Smith, we're divorced. It's not appropriate."
James frowned. "Even if we're divorced, we can still be friends."
"Absolutely not." Emily gave James a cold smile. "Mr. Smith, I have no interest in being friends with my ex-husband. Goodbye, gentlemen."
With that, Emily walked away.
Charles watched her leave, smacking his lips playfully.
James glared at him. "Mr. Green, are you enjoying this?"
"Of course." Charles sat down on a nearby bench, crossing his legs leisurely.
James sneered. "Then let me give you some bad news. My shipment has arrived, but yours is still held up."
Charles stood up in anger but quickly regained his composure, smiling as he sat back down. "As expected of Mr. Smith, nothing can stump you. In business, no one can match you. But in matters of the heart..."
Charles looked at James, shaking his head with a smile. "Even a street vendor has a better love life than you, Mr. Smith."
Seeing James' dark expression, Charles continued to smile. "Mr. Smith, are you really planning to marry Sophia? Are you sure you won't regret it?"
"That's my personal business, none of your concern," James' voice was colder than before.
Charles' smile widened. "Since you won't answer directly, I'll take that as a yes. Mr. Smith, since you're divorced from Ms. Johnson, it means anyone can pursue her now, right?"
"You want to go after Emily?" James gritted his teeth. "Mr. Green, I'm warning you, don't even think about it, or you'll regret it."
