Chapter 227: How Could You?!
Chapter 227: How Could You?!
Rameric Caine's POV:
She looked right at me, pain evident in the look in her eyes when she gritted her teeth together and asked, "How could you?! How could you do such a thing, to me of all people! I thought being by your side meant something, only to be taken away and treated in the manner in which I was. How could you stand there and act like you want to take all the pain and hurt away from me? I thought you were DEAD! I thought I had killed you!"
"My Mate..." I said, my words not sounding as strong as I wished they did in the presence of my menial, 'I wish I could take it all back, but there is nothing I can do to change my mistake. Nothing in this world can change what I did, and the fact that you were harmed in the process makes it all the more real to me.' With that thought, I knew she could hear my words as I could no longer stay standing. When I collapsed with her in my arms, I landed on my knees.
"My Alpha Caine?!" The menial shouted toward me for fear that I had collapsed and could injure myself further.
With that, she rushed toward the door of my bathing chamber and out of sight. I figured she was going to retrieve my Beta. It didn't matter if she did or not. He had seen me in far worse scrapes than this one of me being saddened by a mistake I made, by my not standing up for my Bonded Mate.
I stayed in that position until I heard Beta Galien enter the room, and then he rushed over to me. "My Alpha Caine, what is wrong? Are you alright, My Alpha?" When he reached me, he saw that my Bonded Mate was still lying in my arms, motionless, but only this time, her eyes were open, as tears were silently running down her face. "My Alpha Caine?"
This time, Beta Galien lowered himself down to his knees as well, and he waited there patiently with me to speak. I didn't know what to say in that instance. What could I say to make it up to her? I didn't know what to think that could help ease the pain she was reminiscing over.
"My Alpha Caine, I do believe I know what the issue is," Beta Galien spoke up at that moment, as I still had yet to speak. This caused both me and my Bonded Mate to look over at him as I could feel Rager not liking the fact that our mate was not allowing me to take her pain away. "You and your mate have a long road ahead of you."
I looked at him, furrowing my brows when I noticed that he was looking directly at my mate, Alasia. I then looked down at her as she wasn't even trying to see the expression on my face. I then closed my eyes and once again tried to remove the pain she was feeling when I heard her thoughts again.
'No matter how hard you try, these are not yours,' Alasia said within the confines of her mind. Then she spoke softly when she asked, "What do you mean we have a long road ahead of us? I don't understand what you mean by this."
"What I mean by this is, you both have suffered greatly at the hands of an enemy, one who has sought to destroy our pack from within the heart of it all," Beta Galien spoke softly. I was shocked as to his words, but he didn't stop there. He continued when he added, "They somehow knew that if they could destroy the bond you both share. A bond that is so great, one that no one else can touch, then they can take us all out."
I opened my eyes at the silence after he spoke, hoping she would somehow soften her expression and accept the fact that I admitted I was wrong. I didn't care what happened to me after this point. I just wanted to know that she would be alright. I didn't want my mate to feel the tremendous amount of pain she had coursing through her thoughts, and the fact that she didn't want, nor allow me to help ease her mind, only seemed to make it worse for me.
"Alasia?" I called her name softly, hoping she would heed the expression of remorse I was trying to show her.
Even now, she didn't want to look in my general direction. I tried not to get jealous as I knew Rager wouldn't want her to look at anyone but me when she was holding onto this much pain. However, in that moment, deep inside, I could feel the connection between Rager and Amora starting to grow a little bit stronger. It was as if they were having a conversation of their own. I wanted to know what was being discussed, but the last thing I wanted was for her to reject me after everything that happened.
"Rameric," I heard Alasia call my name as I looked deep into her grass-colored eyes. "I can not go another day and pretend that what I came from didn't hurt me. I want you to know that after everything that has happened, it will take me some time to move past all the pain. Even after all of that, I want you to know something. I know all that you did for me when it really mattered. I am grateful for it, however..." In the middle of her statement, she stopped speaking, leaving me wondering what she had yet to say.
"Yes, what is it?" I asked openly, trying not to sound as frantic and ashamed as I felt wrapped up in that one moment.
"I wanted to say that I am grateful for you," she spoke softly. I reached over with one hand and started to wipe the tears off the side of her cheek, as her legs were now resting on my leg that was still bent up underneath her. "I can't say it will be easy, but if you are willing to help me get past it, I look forward to the life I will have with you. Only if you still want me, that is."
'Did she really have to add that last part?' I heard Beta Galien speak inside my head at that moment.
"I will do all that I can, my Bonded Mate," I told her confidently.
