Chapter 92 - Violet
My eyes widened. I never thought of that. I pulled the book into my hands and started to read over the page Dot was looking at. It went into depth on how to grant power of one to the other.
“I’m so confused.” Simon said as he was looking at various stacks of books around her cabin. “What’s happening?”
Dot gave out a loud sigh. “If you were paying attention you would know.” She snapped at him. I looked at her and shook my head.
I looked over at him. “She’s part witch.”
He stared at me in disbelief, mouth open and eyes wide. “What?”
“Like she said, I’m part witch.” She grabbed another book from the floor and sat it on her lap to look through it.
Simon pulled his hand down his face as he was trying to process this new information. “I don’t understand.”
I stared at Dot, waiting for her to explain. I only knew what she was, not the whole story. I wouldn’t be able to explain it to him.
“Ugh, fine!” She said, throwing the book down and standing. “My mother was half witch, making me a quarter witch. When I found out that I was part, I wanted to keep that part of me alive. Hell, your Pawpaw didn’t even know. I would study in the forest and hide any books I had on the stuff. I couldn’t very well be the Luna and a witch.” She stopped and looked at me. “No offense.”
I smiled at her. “None taken.”
“It was a different time back then. There were stricter laws for us. Your Pawpaw loved me, but I’m not even sure what he would have done if he found out. Even though we were claimed, he could have still rejected me leaving me destitute.”
Simon sat down on a stool next to a counter. “Did dad know?”
“Your father didn’t know. When you were born, Evan was so happy to have a boy to leave the legacy of Alpha of the Dark Forest Falls pack to. Witch blood is inherited more strongly to females.”
“Only if it is part witch. If both parents are witches, they can have a witch son.” I said. “But it’s very difficult to have one parent witch and the other human or Were to have a witch son.”
“No one knows?” Simon asked just above a whisper.
“Only you and Violet. You clever thing.” Dot winked at me.
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” Simon stood and started to pace.
“I didn’t really think it was necessary.” Dot shrugged and continued. “Until Violet showed up.”
I smiled at her.
“You know I wouldn’t have done anything…right?” He stared at her, eyes full of pain. “You hid yourself even after my parents died, then you could have told me.”
“Meh, I thought you would have figured it out when I had those runes put onto you. But after you didn’t say anything. I left it.”
“Oh right, the runes. We need to talk about those.” I said before Simon could say anything else. “Do you remember who put those on Simon?”
“It was an old friend. Senile as hell, long dead now.” She laughed.
“I’m sorry.” I stopped before continuing. “Those runes were not right, I had to fix them from him.”
“I should have figured as much. That old bat could barely see. But beggars can’t be choosers.” She laughed again.
“Nana!” Simon yelled. “Why didn’t you tell me?!”
She stood in front of him and stared into his eyes. “You just lost your parents. You became Alpha overnight. I didn’t want to add the stress that your grandmother was part witch. You were going through so much already.”
He sat back down in the stool. “You still could have told me sooner.”
Dot patted Simon’s shoulder in response. She didn’t have anything else to say on the subject. She couldn’t change the past.
“When your husband died, is that when you started your collection?” I waved my hand in front of all the books covering her cabin.
“More or less.” She smiled. “This was the only way I could practice.” She touched a book gingerly. “Now that you are here, you can teach me.”
I smiled and nodded at her. “I’ll do my best.” I looked at Simon. He was still at a loss. I walked over to him and put my hands on his shoulder and stared into his eyes until he focused on me. “She told you now, that’s better than never telling you.” I kissed his forehead.
He put his hands on my hips and leaned into my chest. I wrapped my arms around his back and tightened my grip. I could feel his loss, as if he were betrayed in some way. I wouldn’t be able to fully understand, but I was going to be there for him if he needed me.
“I’m not going to allow you two to kanoodle in my home.” Dot barked behind us.
I laughed, “We won’t Dot.” I pulled away slightly and looked down at Simon. He gave me a half smile.
Simon looked over my shoulder at his grandmother. “Is that why Violet is my mate?” He asked her.
“Fuck if I know. Who you are mated with is the moon’s will. You could have been mated to a rock if it wanted.” She said shuffling some papers around and looking at them.
Simon chuckled. “I’m the luckiest man alive then.” He pulled me in and kissed me only for a second before pulling away. He stared into my eyes, and I could feel him talking to me. Can you get her to move into the main house?
I nodded at him. “Hey Dot?”
“Hmm?”
“What do you think about moving into the main house? We can give you your own suite and a separate room to house all your books. It would make it easier for me to teach you.”
She set down her papers, “I don’t know. I like my privacy.”
“You would really be doing me a favor. I have to do my own training and I have to set traps for those other witches. I want to be able to have more time with you as well.” I looked at her, giving pleading eyes. “Please?”
“Oh, all right!” Dot said. “You’re just as bad as he is.”
Simon squeezed my hip and tried to hold back a smile.
“Perfect! Simon, when can we get some help moving her things?” I asked as if he was new to this idea.
“I think we could have someone here tomorrow afternoon to help. But Nana, you can’t abuse them verbally or physically.”
“If their being stupid, I’ll abuse them however I want.” She picked up more papers.
Simon let out a sigh but had a smile on his face. “Oh yeah, I need to know, how did you know our plans?”
Dot glanced up from her papers, “that over there told me.” She pointed to a black mirror in the corner. It was a simple mirror that would only show the face when looking at it.
“I can see you are proficient at scrying.” I smiled at her.
“What’s that?” Simon asked.
“It’s when you look into something, and it can show you what you want to know. Like with my crystal ball.”
Simon nodded.
“I’m happy you are moving in with us Dot. I look forward to teaching you.”
“Mmm hmm.” Was her only response.
“Nana, we are going to head out. I’m starving.” Simon said, kissing his grandmother’s head.
Without moving she responded, “mmm hmmm.”
We walked through the door and left her to look over her papers and walked to the main house. Simon’s arm wrapped tightly around my waist. It was a chilly day, but the slight breeze felt good. So much lay ahead of us, I didn’t want to get wrapped up in the details. So many things could go wrong. I wanted to protect this pack and give my coven a chance to really live. I didn’t want to dwell; the night was perfect, and I didn't want to ruin it with an anxiety ridden spiral.
