Chapter 91 - Violet
I thought through the argument. They were right, she was the only logical person that we could use to see how long the spell lasted. “Fine. But if she says no then we leave it and find a different way.”
They all nodded.
“I asked Bruce to bring her to the house.” Simon said. “Let’s go down and meet her outside.”
We all walked out of the room; I grabbed the book before leaving. We went and stood in front of the house. It took Bruce no longer than ten minutes to bring Meredith here.
“Hi, Lady Violet.” She said beaming. “I’m sorry I didn’t come and visit you while you were injured. Thank you so much again for bringing my little boy back. You have no idea how grateful I am.” She took my hand and kissed it.
Lady? Jared’s voice rang in my head. He was mind linking the others.
I looked at them and Simon just shook his head. Later. He responded.
“I have a favor to ask of you.” I said looking back at Meredith.
“Anything.” Her eyes were hopeful.
“You are free to say no. But we need to test out a spell and need a witch to test it out on.” I paused, waiting for her to react but she didn’t. “You wouldn’t be harmed with this spell. It would just sap your powers for a while. We just need to know how long you would be without magic.”
Meredith nodded her head. “Anything for you, Lady Violet.”
She didn’t take long to answer. “Are you sure? You can take more time to think about it.”
“I’m sure. You saved my little boy; this is the least that I can do.” She beamed at me again. “And the Alpha’s generosity. I cannot repay that kindness. If this can help you in anyway, I’ll do it.”
“Told ya.” I could hear Greta whisper behind me. I turned around and glared at her. She just shrugged at me.
“If you are sure, we can perform the spell right now.” I handed the book to Simon open and started reading through the spell as he held it up for me. “What’s going to happen is I will say the incantation and walk in a circle, inside that circle is where the powers will be sapped.” I read through the spell again. “It doesn’t say how small or big the circle has to be, I think we can make them relatively large in the forest to have more of a chance to incapacitate those looking for me.”
I looked at Simon who nodded. “If that’s what you think will work.” He shrugged. “You’re the expert.”
I gave him a smile. “Everyone back up. I’ll recite the spell and once it’s performed, Meredith, you will walk into the circle. After you walk in, walk out, and try to use your powers until they come back. Greta, can you time it as soon as she walks out of the circle?”
“On it!” She yelled as she pulled out her phone.
“Any questions?” I looked at the group.
“I have one.” Jared said stepping forward. “How long will this spell last after you cast it?”
I looked at him. That question didn’t even cross my mind. “I’m hoping it will be like the protection spell where it will be there until it’s disassembled or tripped.”
“Like a bear trap.” Greta chimed in.
“Yes, like a bear trap. Except we are hunting for something more powerful.” I gave her a smile. “Any other questions?”
No one responded. I took the book from Simon, everyone stepped back as I started to recite the incantation. I walked in a medium sized circle, big enough to hold ten people packed together. Once I completed the incantation the circle glowed bright purple then blended with the grass around it.
“Meredith, walk through the circle.” I said to her as I stepped away.
Meredith stood at the edge of the circle and took a deep breath. After taking a moment, she walked through the circle and gasped loudly. She took a few deep breaths.
“Are you ok?” I asked her.
She didn’t respond but walked out of the circle and stood in front of me. Greta started the timer.
“Are you ok?” I asked again.
She took a deep breath. “Yeah, that was a like getting hit by a bus.” She gave a weak smile. She turned around and raised her hand pointing it away from the group. She was trying to use her powers. We stood there and watched her.
“How long?” I looked over my shoulder at Greta.
“Five minutes.”
Meredith continued to try and use her powers, but nothing was happening. I wasn’t sure what she was trying to do. But she continued to hold up her hand and point trying to summon some sort of magic. She struggled to the point of sweating. She lowered her hand for a moment, trying to catch her breath.
“Ten minutes.” Greta said.
Meredith raised her hand again, continuing to try and use some sort of magic.
“Fifteen minutes.”
After Greta gave the time, a small fire burned on the grass.
“Was that you?” I looked at Meredith.
She turned and smiled weakly. “Yeah.”
I nodded my head. “We have fifteen minutes to capture a witch that walks through the circle before they get their powers back.”
“That should be pretty easy if we have the circles closer to the protection spell that you have set up. We can station guards directly in front of those and when they hit the spot they can leave and grab the witch.” Simon said as he walked over to where I was standing. “Meredith, I know that you struggled for a little, but would you do me a favor and walk through the circle again?”
Her eyes darted to me quickly and then back to him, not wanting to do what he asked. “Of course.” Was her only answer. She took a deep breath and stood at the edge of where the circle had been made. She took a quick step in and held her breath. When nothing happened, she released her breath and looked at me. “Nothing happened.” She said, sounding relieved.
“I was right. Once the spell has been used it is done.” I said, closing the book and putting it under my arm. “Thank you so much, Meredith. I really appreciate the help.”
“Any time.” She smiled back at me. “May I leave?”
“Of course. Say ‘hi’ to Toby for me.”
“I will.” She beamed and walked back to where she was staying.
I walked to where the others were standing. Simon put his arm around my waist and pulled me closer to him. “When do we put these traps down?” I looked at Simon.
“Let’s do it first thing tomorrow morning. There is less activity then.” Simon said.
“Sounds like a plan.” I said. I was exhausted, I used so much power between practice and this spell I felt drained.
“Let’s go get something to eat.” Greta said.
We all nodded and started to walk in. Before I could even climb the first step someone yelled behind me. “Girl! Violet!”
I turned and saw Simon’s Nana walking as fast as she could toward us. I jogged toward her before she hurt herself.
“Hi, Dot.” I grabbed her arm before she could stumble forward.
“Nana, you shouldn’t be running like that.” Simon came and took her other arm.
“Shut up, boy.” Was all she could huff out.
“Nana, you can’t talk to me like that. I’m the Alpha.” Simon whined at Dot. I tried to hide the smile that was forming. Whenever he was around his grandmother, he sounded more like a boy than a man.
“What can I do for you, Dot?”
“I want to show you something back in my cabin.” She said, still trying to catch her breath.
“Of course.” I said to her. “What is it?”
“Something that I think will help in the upcoming fight.”
“Nana, how do you know about that?” Simon looked down at her. “You always seem to know things you shouldn’t.”
“It’s for me to know.” She tilted her nose away from Simon but then looked back at him. “But I think under the circumstances it’s time for you to find out.”
“Find out what?”
“I’m surprised you don’t know.” I said to him. I figured out Dot’s secret pretty quickly.
“Know what?” He looked from me to his grandmother.
“Shut up and follow me.” Nana pulled away from us and led us to her cabin. I walked into what looked like a disheveled library. Hundreds of books graced every surface of her cabin, piles of books lay on the floor. About fifteen books were shaped in a circle, open to various pages.
I picked up a book that was on the counter. ‘Spells and Potions’ it read. I picked up another one, ‘Runes for Protection.’
“Where did you get all these?” I took my eyes off another book and looked at Nana.
“I have the hook up.” Was all she said as she walked to the center of the book circle and sat on the floor looking at the book in front of her.
“I can see that.” I laughed as I set the books down and followed her to her book circle. “What did you need to show me?”
I looked at the book that was in front of her. It was one of the books that she bought when I first saw her, the one in Latin. “This is what I wanted to show you.” She pointed down at the page. “Werewolves against witches isn’t a fair fight. But what if we could temporarily give a werewolf some power?” She looked up at me.
