Chapter 142
Chapter 142
“Vee!” He called out her nickname in the same tender, loving tone he'd used years ago, when they were still together in his pack. The familiar sound of his voice, the way he whispered her name, awakened a flood of past memories and emotions.
“Don't!” She snapped, turning around, and letting out a gasped breath. “Don't you dare call me that. You have no right!” She pointed straight into his chest.
“Veronica, please.” He begged, falling on his knees.
“You lost the right to call my name that way the moment you stood there and watched me being humiliated and you did nothing. Absolutely nothing, Beck. You did nothing, despite my desperate cries for help.” She held her breath, and turned around, leaving again.
“Wait up. Listen to me.” He jumped to his feet, going after her, but she refused to stop.
“Please, hear me out. Forgive me. Please give me another chance to make it up to you. I'm begging you.” He continued, his voice laced with a mix of longing and desperation, his eyes pleading for her to listen.
“When I was begging you that day, you didn't answer me. Instead you turned your back on me. That's exactly what I'm doing right now. What does a taste of your own medicine feel like? Huh?”
“Horrible, Vee. It's horrible and I hate myself for what I did to you.” He said, still following her.
Seeing that she wasn't ready to stop running away from him, he suddenly stopped.
“Fine, if you don't want to hear me out,” He said, his voice laced with a hint of pain. “I have one last thing to say.” Veronica stopped in her tracks, sensing the gravity of the moment.
Beck immediately seized the opportunity, and rushed to her with an air of sincerity.
“Look me in the eye,” He said, his gaze burning with intensity, “and tell me you've moved on. Tell me you no longer love me like I love you, and that you've found happiness with someone else. If you can do that, I promise I'll leave right now, and you'll never see me again for the rest of your life. And I'll never bother you again.”
His tone was serious, but filled with uncertainty. The air was tense, and his breath hung as he awaited her response.
Veronica's heart skipped a beat as she stood there, frozen in shock. She struggled to maintain a poker face, unwilling to reveal the turbulence brewing inside her. The anger she had harbored for so long still simmered, but Beck's words had awakened a deeper emotion - the love she had for him, which had never fully extinguished.
As she searched his eyes, she knew he meant every word. She had always known Beck to be a man of his words, and if she told him she'd moved on, she knew he'd honour her decision and disappear from her life forever. But was that what she wanted?
Veronica felt like she was standing at a crossroads, torn between her pain and her heart.
For Beck, though he knew his heart wouldn't be able to take it if Veronica said she never wanted to see him again, he knew he just had to ask her. He had to do something so that he would know if he still stood a chance with her.
Seeing how reluctant she was to answer, he immediately knew that she still felt something for him, and this gave him a bit of hope.
He waited and hoped that she would give him a response, but to his surprise, instead of giving him a response, she suddenly turned and ran away from him, heading to one of the pack's guest apartments, far away from the main palace, thinking she could hide away from him.
Thinking he would assume that she didn't want to see him anymore with the way she ran away, but to her surprise, he followed her still, refusing to let go without a fight.
“Leave me alone! Do you have any idea of what you put me through? Do you have even a faint idea of what I went through all alone all these years? Do you?” She cried bitterly.
“But I'm sorry.” Beck kept uttering the same words over and over again, his heart shattering into pieces as he watched Veronica cry bitterly.
“‘Sorry’ doesn't cut it! ‘Sorry’ doesn't solve anything!” She yelled at him angrily.
Veronica’s emotion erupted, an interwoven mix of anger and frustration. She was furious with Beck for the pain he had caused her, but she was equally angry with herself for still loving him.
The fact that she couldn't bring herself to answer him a few seconds ago when he asked if she had moved on, only added more fuel to the fire of her anger.
She was terribly angry that she had truly been unable to move on after such a long time. The realization that she has been unable to move on, to find closure was one bitter pill to swallow.
“I went through hell, Beck! I was almost killed multiple times and now you come back here and just ask me to forgive you just like that? Is that how it works?” She kept crying.
“Please leave me alone! I don't want you anymore! I don't want to see you anymore!” She screamed in anguish, punching him, even as Beck held her, taking all the blows, hoping that she would finally be able to calm down after hitting him as much as he wanted.
“I don't love you. You caused me nothing but pain. You betrayed the trust I had in you and left me hanging. I don't love you!” She kept hitting him continuously.
“You no longer love me?” He asked, his heart shattering into pieces.
“I wish I didn't love you so much!” She suddenly blurted out, “I wish I could move on from—” And before they knew what was going on, Beck leaned in and kissed her, shutting her up.
Not completely in the right frame of mind because of the effect of the alcohol she had taken earlier, she still decided to kiss him back. Although a bit tipsy, she still had an idea of what she was doing.
For Beck, the rush of emotions of seeing his first love again took control of him. They kissed each other passionately, until Beck realized what was going on, and what was going to happen if he didn't stop.
“I don't want to take advantage of you, Vee. Please slow down.” He said, trying to stop her.
“But I want it. I really want you.” She said as she desperately pulled off her dress, revealing her bare body.
Beck swallowed hard as he managed to say, “You're drunk, Vee. You don't know what you're saying.”
“No, Beck. I know what I'm saying. I've always wanted this,” She whispered, her voice husky and flirtatious. Her warm breath caressed his ear, sending shivers down his spine and weakening his resolve.
Beck’s resistance crumbled, and he surrendered to the passion that had been building between them. The night that followed was wild and all-consuming, filled with moans and whispers as they gave in to their desires.
They soon collapsed into each other’s arms, exhausted, but satisfied. Sleep took over them quickly, their bodies entwined as they drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
